Thank you sir for the great knowledge and thank you for stoping by and talking with the students of Full Sail university. Gave us great insight on the industry. God bless.
Kendall I don't know why it took so long for me to meet you. I happy to say we are now friends and thats a good thing. I look forward to doing a lot of business with you in the future.
you always hear about rappers wanting to stay independent and turning down record contracts, but the independent road is 100x harder not only do you have to rap, you also have to wear many hates such a marketing, accounting, promo, and the list goes on. the most important think tho, is you have to be business savey and most people aren't. how the fuck do u think your going to run your independent label with u and your friends, when you guys can't even flip an oz of what ever you Hussle with out fuckng up hour reup money. signing to a major is in most artist best interest. at least sign a short tern contract to pick up game and when you fulfill the terms of the contract go the independent route with more knowledge. Nipsy Hussle is the perfect example of this
Dickies Santoro Honestly it all depends on the artist , but like you mentioned , u could just sign a contract with a label for a short time untill ur name is buzzing then ur all good , chance the rapper is a great example of an independent artist that made it big. Another example is an underground artist called xxxtentacion, he's independent, only 19 years old , but has a huge fanbase already , the thing that made him big tho is that he's always surrounded with controversy and that helped him a lot
One more reason, as if there weren't already enough, to not sign with a major record company. Why would you sign a contract that basically pays you like you're working at McDonald's while the idiots who have killed the business are sitting in a fancy office counting their money? Do it yourself.
yeah but you know what's worst it's when you just starting out and people come to your concerts because of your originality, music that you write and then labels start to chase you in order to sign a deal and once you do, then they start to dictate and change you, telling you what they want and what should go on the album, that's when you become a slave
Rihanna is a prime example of someone super popular with no money. All of her money is in those deals her label got her. If she pulls out she will be left with absolutely nothing and a whole lot of debt. She may as well stay for the ride. She probably takes home a few hundred thousand a year for herself which is actually fine for not writing or producing your own music or anything at that.
Sean Freeman free clothes from designers, free hotels stays sometimes...but tbh they really don't make much unless they tour non stop and have other business ventures. Rihanna is the definition of having the whole world with owning absolutely nothing..Lil Wayne and Nicki minaj. Only ppl that's rich frfr is the carters, puffy, Dr dre, jimmy ivien, Clive davis, Tommy matola..was Micheal Jackson and prince becuz the owned their music but as soon as the bought the rights to their music they died...everyone else is as good as their last hit. No hits, no tours no money...but u have to pay back those advances, somehow. T.L.C left eye broke it down. 10 million plus albums sold for crazy sexy cool yet the had to split 30,000$ between 3 ppl and still had debts on top of l a Reid deducting cost off the top.
My friend and I do hip hop music..He really wants a record deal, and I keep telling him that that is a stupid thing to do...just stay independent and do it for the love of it.
Let's get deeper....the companies are losing money....BECAUSE they didn't not use their intellect, or revenues correctly. They let the internet pass them by. They already make a sizable amount from the artist prior to 360. They are to fault for slow record sales and should rightfully be suffering CEO on down. As far "risk" money, I hate this part, with payola and other agencies, this isn't a real risk....it's a guarantee. So they aren't "risking" anything, but controlling,
rscully5 no the other stuff is considered costs of doing business so taxes can be deducted before or after how it's done I'm assuming is based off of what will provide the most profit
He's just telling it like it is. If the labels can't make money off of physical CD sales...they have to recoup their investment from somewhere.(merch,touring,etc.) It's not rocket science. A band can do it independently ...as long as they have the $ to hire a marketing/promotion company to help get their music heard by the world, not just their myspace friends. The obvious other way and that's to hit the road with your band....That also is quite an expense.
yeah but economicly speaking 100k will only last u bout a year if that depending on how u live and if u wanna live like how i wanna live then a 100k aint shit.
Well lets not go that far 50k isnt enough for eney rapper these days and with record sales looking the way they're looking 50k really isnt enough. Also sighning to a major can dictate what single comes out and what doesnt most record companys have a listing board and has to make an approval to allow your CD to hit the market if they dont agree you must change the song are ure record wont come out.FUCK THAT SHIT I AINT NO SLAVE I dont get told what tha fuck 2 say ima G
I find the comments below hilarious for any musical act that DOES NOT have the ability to finance themselves. You wanna get famous, you don't have the cash to hire all the folks necessary to put you over the top, but you're NOT going to go over the top without their help. SO YOU WANT THESE PEOPLE/CORPORATIONS TO HELP YOU FOR FREE…..and that makes you a nit-wit who knows how to play 8 out-of-tune chords on your guitar.
360 deals are the worst deal an artist can get.I heard that record labels are going to stop giving out eney kind of deals for new artist but 360 deals. If that happens then ALL artist should go independent and ive heard only rappers get 360 deals? why is that?!
Greed in the music industry toward the consumer is what caused people to start bootlegging the music, which is what caused the decline of music sales. Now they take it out on the artist. Hot mess!
so basically everytime you turn around (360) degrees they got their hands in your pockets bring your talents and we'll help you make us the majority of your money off of all of your talents, obviously you sign an artist because you know they can make you money so why make it seem like hey if it wasn't for us you wouldn't make any money when if it wasn't for the artists wtf would the labels be cant have a record label with nobody recording records im sure you lose creative control too
Trinidad james got a 360 deal so don`t get rattled when u hear this joke`s 2 million dollar deal.... it`s funny how some rappers fear being broke but loves gettin raped
great video
My guy Kendall Minter! Rest in peace, you'll be missed!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Rest in peace Mr. Minter. You are missed, dearly!
the worst thing and it's like being cursed is when you're famous, everybody knows you but you've got no money

Within the past five yrs..remember hiphop 5yrs ago(no satan symbols,no skirts)now look at it can u tell who go 360d

Elkhan Hamet a rich slave that can invest in something more meaningful.
Pimps and human traffickers are what these, "Labels" actually are!!!
Crazy.
@tlb31m same thang when you work for a job
Wow, who would have thought that the feudal system is alive and well in the record industry.
the internet is saving artists from record labels. as an artist, thats ur biggest tool next to ur talent.
excellent video.
I will never sign a 360 deal.
Indie music is my way to go.
Rihanna is a prime example of someone super popular with no money.

Sean Freeman if I was ripped off like that I wouldn't write my own music either
Sean Freeman well damn

Nice, my sentiments exactly, i'm pondering signing one at the moment. thanks
-$DR$
My friend and I do hip hop music..He really wants a record deal, and I keep telling him that that is a stupid thing to do...just stay independent and do it for the love of it.
NOW that's knowledge bruh. Put yourself out, be creative, stream expenses, concentrate on your craft, and DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED.
Sounds like being taxed by the record company.
So basically, 360 deal is even bigger scam than non-360 deal.
Any artist foolish enough to sign a 360 deal, needs to be put before a firing squad. This is economic suicide.
were they losing money, or not making as much money. there is a difference i think
Kinda stuck for the ride wake up sheeple

Songs like hollywood divorce by andre 3000 from 5yrs ago they talked bout this
So an artist generates $100,000 and takes home $30,000? Then that have to pay taxes on the $100,00?
rscully5 no the other stuff is considered costs of doing business so taxes can be deducted before or after how it's done I'm assuming is based off of what will provide the most profit
He's just telling it like it is.

LOOKS LIKE ACE BOOGIE FROM PAID IN FULL. lmfaoo
Been Cozy thought the same lol
everybody got they hands in your pocket.
yeah but economicly speaking 100k will only last u bout a year if that depending on how u live and if u wanna live like how i wanna live then a 100k aint shit.
Listen to a lil wayne, kanye, snoop dogg song 5yrs ago..they talked bout this..
