I have used my m12 fuel hatchet for three hours, trimming pine branches. The saw is very light and comfortable, and performed great. The only negative thing I can say about, is that I had to refill the chain oil about every fifteen minutes .
We cut a lot of brush and tree branches on our property. We just bought the mini chainsaw, and it works great! We bought it for my wife to use on smaller branches and tree limbs. It is easy for her to use and lightweight. Definitely glad I bought it
I got both, and let me tell ya they each have their place. When trimmin’ out a grip load of oak and cedar trees up top (35’+). I climb typically with my M18 Hackzall with a Bosch blade. Fast work up top, with heck of reach with the long blades! After removing tree fodder, and gotsta get several bigger limbs, the M12 Hatchet comes out to play. On the ground, I need to chop up all these branches to smaller size to tightly compact all of it in my bins. Hatchet wins hands down. Negatives on the M12 hatchet, the grip is big, and tires out your forearms quickly. The negative on the Hackzall, on unsupported or smaller branches, the machine just vibrates the heck out of the branches. Both are quintessential tools for tree work IMHO. If i had to choose one, it would be the Hackzall secondary to its versatility.
I own two lots adjacent to my property. I easily limbed out all the trees on both of those lots with my m18 hackzall with the Diablo pruning blades and by the way I only went through two blades. So much so that I had to hire a commercial chipper to get rid of all the trimmings. Had a ton of mulch from that endeavor.‘Here’s the deal’ much of the time I was high in those trees easily cutting large limbs one handed. None of my chainsaws could have worked in that situation and I doubt the weight of this one would have worked in that situation. Additionally, I had to cut some large steel pieces on my Peterbilt and this same tool did it with ease with the Diablo metal blades. Trust me...I own a TON of Milwaukee tools and I’m not lying when I say I think my favorite tool of them all is my M18 hackzall. I’ve put mine through hell and it never hesitated a bit. I never thought I would ever say that.
My m18 hacksaw is my pride and joy in my m18 lineup. Their sawzall is a two handed operation and is heavy whereas this hacksaw is lighter and intended for one handed operation. You can hold a limb or "off fall" and not worry about it smashing your toes. I liked it so much that i got my safety department to approve these so we can swap them out for sawzalls and not have to put everything in a pipe vice at work (stupid safety policies). Now the problem is everybody wants to steal them instead of getting their own lol.
9" Diablo pruning blade, M18 FUEL Hackzall in conjunction with a gas chainsaw, this thing is unstoppable, even against New Mexico's worst trees that are known to kill chainsaw blades. As much as I wanted that Hatchet, the M18 platform simply cannot be beat, as it is used as a firewood cutter for smaller logs.
The Hatchet is pretty sweet. I am slowly coming over to the Milwaukee side from Ryobi. Nothing bad to say about my Ryobi tools, I got a 5 piece M12 tool set with a charger, 2 batteries, 5 tools and a carrying bag for $199 during Black Friday. I couldn't pass it up, I really wanted the M12 Ratchet.
Bad thing about the hatchet is its only an m12, requires oil to lube chain, kind of spendy, and has limited uses. I contemplated getting the Hatchet to take on atv trails with me. I already have the m18 hackzall which is multipurpose. I'll stick with the Hackzall.
This whole year I did my professional tree trimming with the m18 hackzall. Worked well. Would love to save on blades by using the hatchet though. Or at least save weight with the m12 hackzall.
But here’s the thing, if you go with the chainsaw it’s one tools made for wood. With the hackzall you can cut wood, and switch blades to cut everything else

Everything was corded and everything was run off a generator. Chainsaws where for cutting floor joist Raptors and a few other things so basically the chainsaw was the first cordless tool.👊👍🇺🇸
I just used the M18 hacksaw on my backyard yesterday. The M12 hatchet would have been perfect after I cut the branches down with the hacksaw due to the one handed use. Great video as always
Had a grove of areca palm trees and blindly bought the full M18 FUEL CHAINSAW to help me get rid of them. It kept bogging down when the stumps got denser toward the bottom. I just broke out my M18 FUEL Hackzall and a Diablo pruning blade -- my Hackzall, ladies and gentlemen, even though I have a Super Sawzall -- and it finished the job. Took the stumps down level with the ground!! I ended up returning the Chainsaw. I can't imagine the Hatchet to be any more useful.

I have a number of chainsaws but usually go to a cordless Sawzall for light timing and pruning, it's just easier and doesn't have the kickback of a chain saw. Obviously when I'm felling trees or removing large branches the chainsaw is the only way to go but I've used both the M12 and M18 Hackzall for smaller limb work and there are redeeming qualities of going that route (I have had to modify battery the tabs on my M12 because it will fall out but the small light package is great when you're working up in a tree).
The only reason I have not purchased the new Milwaukee M12 chainsaw because I have both Milwaukee Sawzall and I've used both for cutting small branches but anything bigger I have a few different size chainsaws so as much as I like this new tool I think you have to be in the landscaping business for this to be useful. Chainsaw is perfect for small limb removal and hacksall with pruning blade work best for its application both are a must for me as i detail ornamental trees such as olive,crapemyrtles,japanese maples ect and the best part is no gas saw noise. Plus its Milwaukee 😬
I love the diablo blades, I use them in my ryobi recip for pruning bushes, I will admit I go back and forth between their dedicated pruning blade and their wood and nails blade depending on what I'm cutting, I find the dedicated pruning blade with the 18v brushed ryobi recip tends to struggle with the small stuff where the wood and nails blades do well with the small but are slower in the thicker branches. The major advantage I see with the recip saws is that when I'm cutting downed limbs up or removing bushes I don't have to worry about sticking the blade in the dirt. In fact I often use the blades to cut roots. Even for a professional, I kind of see this tool as a flop as I cant think of very many, if any, other m12 tools that would make it worth investing in the m12 platform for a professional landscaper or arborist. If it were on the m18 line, i feel like it would be a much better value over-all as it would have other complimentary tools on the battery platform for those professions, IE pole saw, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, small blower, chem sprayer.
In the last year, my m18 hackzall has cut conduit (emt, rigid, pvc), strut, and other various electrical cuts.. two old plastic coolers at home to make easier to throw out. Scrap lumber for bulk trash. An 8’ Christmas tree. And after the new year to cut the Christmas tree into pieces for bulk trash. It works awesome for me. Super useful in a variety of tasks when you need it. I’ve said it before, the m12 chainsaw is a very job specific tool that should’ve been released in the m18 platform. With the release of all their lawn work battery tools being m18 it would make more sense to have them whole lot on the m18 platform.
what would be best to cut down firewood splits from 16" to 10-12" in the m12 line? hatchet, hackzall or circular saw? I will never cut down trees, limbs or branches, i might use a hackzall to cut tree roots attacking my driveway, and i would use the circular saw often to cut 2x4's or plywood. I don't have any of these 3 yet. just trying to determine which would solve this task best.

if you keep your tools busy the difference in the cost of blades over a few moments to sharpen (2 mins average sharping time) the chain will be significant. 16.99 is the chain cost The chain will last aprox 6 times longer then the hacksaw blades if you spring for the deoblo blades. Pricy.
Although I don't have a large property, you can consider my property very small, I have an excessive amount of trees hanging over my yard from the drain behind the fence. They are constantly shedding limbs into my hard causing issues. I was looking for a mini chain saw or a 6in Recip saw 18v. This video basically sealed the deal that a chain saw is for cutting wood/pruning and a reciprocating saw (although this video showed it on wood) can be used for multiple things. For the 10 or less outings I would take the saw out, I'd probably get a reciprocating saw and different Diablo blades. I don't care about the extra time per cut when pruning. 2x4 is the only other thing I'd be cutting with the saw.
I really do not see a use for the hatchet other than unboxing videos (AvE style). Those pruning blades go thru wood like a hot knife thru butter. But, I did not see the comparison of the M12 hatchet with the M18 hackzall, only the M12 hackzall. Only saw the M18 sawzall in the video.
I've got the Hatchet in my snowmobile tunnel bag. Amazing compact way to get trees out of the trail or firewood for a wiener fire. Buy the 6.0 battery though. More power and longer run time.
Title of the video is for M12 Fuel Hatchet or M18 Fuel Hackzall yet in the video the M12 Fuel Hackzall is used. It would have been great to see all three as a comparison but really wanted to see how the M18 Fuel Hackzall faired, I suspect right in the middle of those results somewhere. That said you definitely hit the nail on the head with the comment being that not one size fits all bit. For me its a no brainer on the choice Hackzall all day over a little speed sacrifice not to mention you could put a longer blade on it if you had to. Still I like seeing head to heads and if I did a lot of pruning I'd be all over the hatchet.
I just got a hackzall to cut little limbs and branches. Now I feel like I need a hatchet 😂. I did use the hackzall to cut out some flooring and did enjoy it.
it's important to remember that one of the two saws is easily used with one hand. Just one. Just one of the two saws has almost no impact on your hand and arm. Just one. No change in the direction of movement in the chain of course so much much more comfortable to use. Good showdown.
Exactly. Battery drain on the Hackzall is fairly fast. Got one at HD for $150. Cut off some tree runners and then later sawed off some metal from old snow shovels. Have mostly DeWalt, wanted some M12 Milwaukees. They're very nice tools.
I was thinking some demolition work in tight corners though don't have pruning tool. I do have multi-tool though seems a little slow. Ex. Cut floor beam support on top of cinder block. I am low on money for now. M18 framing nailer & pack out vac first purchase then I might get tool.

I liked his one size fits all speech. I bought m12 hammer drill a year ago in place of the impact driver so I could use it with a few other things. But the impact driver I just realized is actually way faster and stronger than the hammer drill lol
I have them both and have a considerable amount of trees on my property. I found that the hatchet works quicker and with less vibration. But it is messier with the oil and like its bigger brother tends to leak even when not in use so I usually have to empty them before storing which is a little bit of a pain. With the Hackzall I have found that when l used the Diablo blades you are using they are a little too agressive in the teeth spacing for a saw with such a short stroke slowing progress down. I found that the wood with nails and even the metal blades seem to cut faster and with less vibration. However the Diablo blades in the big Hacksaw are amazing!
You are spot on with your assessment. I have bought a few different pruning blades just to find out your run of the mill wood blades work equally if not better in the m18 hacksaw. He should do another review testing it out.
I think the reciprocating saw is better then that hatchet but you need to better blade on there like you have there. 😍. Diablo also makes a pruning blade. ❤️

The thin kerf "bowsaw" style pruning Sawzall blades are superior to the hook tooth ones for green tree work, still never catch the chainsaw, but better!

I got the whole set for the mini chainsaw for only 125 4 amp hr battery included. I doubt I’ll ever use it but I can sell the charger and bring my costs to around 110.
I bought the dewalt DCG418X1, first I was on budget dilemma between the milwaukee M18 2981 bare tool and the dewalt, I have M18 batteries but I found on eBay an irresistible dewalt deal, 9ah battery , charger and others accessories for 299 and a coupon discount of 44.85 now I'm waiting for my tool in few days. I also considered reviews from this dewalt tool.
The m18 sawzall is 2 handed. I think Milwaukee should make a 12" 14" arborist chainsaw that can be used with one hand like makita made. I still bought and love using the m12 6" saw
For any contractors that are watching. This would be legaly be seen as a chainsaw and in some countries (at least Sweden) you need a licence to use s chainsaw in a comercial purpose. Reason be that with big chainsaws people keep messing up and killing themselfs or cut their legs off. Sould be no need for licence to use private in your own garden
Let see one goes forward doing nothing then cuts coming back in short strokes. The other one cuts continuously in one direction. So what one do you think is going to cut faster. And the continouse cutting one cuts out big segments.
I've got the M18 hackzall which is killer, but the M18 Hatchet (not available at the time of this video I don't think) blows the M12 away. The M12 is still a decent pruning saw though.

I have the M12 hacksaw, but also the M18 hacksaw. The M12 is for little dinky jobs. The M18 hacksaw runs circles around the M12 for pruning jobs.

Wow, my M18 16” chainsaw cut a 16” diameter tree with no problems at all.

They are constantly shedding limbs into my hard causing issues. I was looking for a mini chain saw or a 6in Recip saw 18v. This video basically sealed the deal that a chain saw is for cutting wood/pruning and a reciprocating saw (although this video showed it on wood) can be used for multiple things. For the 10 or less outings I would take the saw out, I'd probably get a reciprocating saw and different Diablo blades. I don't care about the extra time per cut when pruning. 2x4 is the only other thing I'd be cutting with the saw.

I really do not see a use for the hatchet other than unboxing videos (AvE style). Those pruning blades go thru wood like a hot knife thru butter. But, I did not see the comparison of the M12 hatchet with the M18 hackzall, only the M12 hackzall. Only saw the M18 sawzall in the video.
I've got the Hatchet in my snowmobile tunnel bag. Amazing compact way to get trees out of the trail or firewood for a wiener fire. Buy the 6.0 battery though. More power and longer run time.

Title of the video is for M12 Fuel Hatchet or M18 Fuel Hackzall yet in the video the M12 Fuel Hackzall is used. It would have been great to see all three as a comparison but really wanted to see how the M18 Fuel Hackzall faired, I suspect right in the middle of those results somewhere. That said you definitely hit the nail on the head with the comment being that not one size fits all bit. For me its a no brainer on the choice Hackzall all day over a little speed sacrifice not to mention you could put a longer blade on it if you had to. Still I like seeing head to heads and if I did a lot of pruning I'd be all over the hatchet.
I just got a hackzall to cut little limbs and branches. Now I feel like I need a hatchet 😂.
I did use the hackzall to cut out some flooring and did enjoy it.

M12 FUEL Hatchet with M18 FUEL Saw Zall 2nd gen is the perfect combo.
it's important to remember that one of the two saws is easily used with one hand. Just one. Just one of the two saws has almost no impact on your hand and arm. Just one. No change in the direction of movement in the chain of course so much much more comfortable to use. Good showdown.

Hackzall for roots with pruning blade n tiny branches. Hatchet for limbing.
Exactly. Battery drain on the Hackzall is fairly fast. Got one at HD for $150. Cut off some tree runners and then later sawed off some metal from old snow shovels. Have mostly DeWalt, wanted some M12 Milwaukees. They're very nice tools.
I was thinking some demolition work in tight corners though don't have pruning tool. I do have multi-tool though seems a little slow. Ex. Cut floor beam support on top of cinder block. I am low on money for now. M18 framing nailer & pack out vac first purchase then I might get tool.

I liked his one size fits all speech. I bought m12 hammer drill a year ago in place of the impact driver so I could use it with a few other things. But the impact driver I just realized is actually way faster and stronger than the hammer drill lol
I have them both and have a considerable amount of trees on my property. I found that the hatchet works quicker and with less vibration. But it is messier with the oil and like its bigger brother tends to leak even when not in use so I usually have to empty them before storing which is a little bit of a pain. With the Hackzall I have found that when l used the Diablo blades you are using they are a little too agressive in the teeth spacing for a saw with such a short stroke slowing progress down. I found that the wood with nails and even the metal blades seem to cut faster and with less vibration. However the Diablo blades in the big Hacksaw are amazing!
You are spot on with your assessment. I have bought a few different pruning blades just to find out your run of the mill wood blades work equally if not better in the m18 hacksaw. He should do another review testing it out.

I think the reciprocating saw is better then that hatchet but you need to better blade on there like you have there. 😍. Diablo also makes a pruning blade. ❤️

What should I buy for cutting up my dead palm tree branches? They are big and very hard like wood. I just want to quickly cut them to place them in the bin
The thin kerf "bowsaw" style pruning Sawzall blades are superior to the hook tooth ones for green tree work, still never catch the chainsaw, but better!

I'd skip the mini chainsaw and get a pole chainsaw the same size for pruning. The mini reciprocating is good enough and a larger battery chainsaw if you need it for ground work
That full size is a beast compared to the little compact saw. Will the little one will still cut 20 gauge sheet metal fairly fast?

I got the whole set for the mini chainsaw for only 125 4 amp hr battery included. I doubt I’ll ever use it but I can sell the charger and bring my costs to around 110.

I bought the dewalt DCG418X1, first I was on budget dilemma between the milwaukee M18 2981 bare tool and the dewalt, I have M18 batteries but I found on eBay an irresistible dewalt deal, 9ah battery , charger and others accessories for 299 and a coupon discount of 44.85 now I'm waiting for my tool in few days.
I also considered reviews from this dewalt tool.
Have owned a Sawzall for years im so use to it I don't even use or own a hacksaw or hand saw anymore.

The m18 sawzall is 2 handed. I think Milwaukee should make a 12" 14" arborist chainsaw that can be used with one hand like makita made. I still bought and love using the m12 6" saw

Home Depot had the M12 Hackzall with a battery for $114.00 last night. Done!
For any contractors that are watching. This would be legaly be seen as a chainsaw and in some countries (at least Sweden) you need a licence to use s chainsaw in a comercial purpose. Reason be that with big chainsaws people keep messing up and killing themselfs or cut their legs off. Sould be no need for licence to use private in your own garden

Let see one goes forward doing nothing then cuts coming back in short strokes. The other one cuts continuously in one direction. So what one do you think is going to cut faster. And the continouse cutting one cuts out big segments.

I've got the M18 hackzall which is killer, but the M18 Hatchet (not available at the time of this video I don't think) blows the M12 away. The M12 is still a decent pruning saw though.
How much does the replacement chain cost? $20 each. Not easy to sharpen.
