Yes, XY Ash was surely the Best, but the Problem is, he was 'suddenly' the best. You can't call it 'character progression' or anything like that if nothing actually happened. He was just rewritten to be good all of a sudden. There was no actual Event between Before-XY and XY! Also, he focused way too much on Greninja, leading many people to state things like 'His other Pokemon were just like Tools for him!" And regardless of all that, of course, Serena dissapearing for good is just a Giant Shame and people are upset, even in 2020 still! Point is, the Anime has Problems. And it needs spine to accept and work on that - which is a Problem, because the Owners of this Franchise... well, you know...
The whole "his other Pokémon were just like tools for him" is stupid considering there were entire episodes dedicated for Ash training with one specific Pokémon, but yeah, I definitely agree with you about the whole "suddenly good" thing. The writers just realized their fuck up in resting Ash in Unova so they just made him suddenly a badass again in Kalos, probably to bring back the fans who hated the BW anime. But he just suddenly got good, there was no explanation for it, just as there was no explanation as to why he suddenly sucked in Unova. It was just "because the writers wanted it" and that's it. It's not about storytelling or compelling arcs, is just constantly changing the character to fit the narrative and their stupid ideas and hope it sticks. Ash is unfortunately a character who's too tied down to marketing to really develop right, but at least Journey's Ash feels like a confirmation from Kalos and Alola at the same time- most of the time at least.
