Top marks to Charlie Stayt for his direct, unsentimental but empathetic and sensitive interviewing. I found this an admirable and deeply moving interview with the always funny and otherwise greatly gifted Clive James. Bless him for his contribution to the humour that sustains us all, and for the overall beauty of his work. The twinkle remains in the eyes, and the smile continues to hover. His books and poems will live on...
it occurred to me watching him navigate through his questions that Charlie Stayt had no idea that he too would follow the same mortal path. Much younger than Clive and clueless. Understandable though.
What a gorgeous mam! The saddest thing is that due to his medical condition he could not come home to Australia at the end . Clive You are a wonderful person, man and Aussie. You made mr laugh until I cried .... You will live on! Life itself is the mystery ....how beautiful,l!!!
I have fond memories as a child watching Clive on TV; showing us them bizarre TV commercials from around the world. His wit, dry humour, a natural talent. Remarkably, it has been over 3½ years since this interview & happily, Clive is still with us. It will be a very sad day though when the end is reached.
I've always been a fan of Clive James, I couldn't believe it when I heard how ill he is. He looks well in this interview, I hope things get better for him. Good luck Clive, take care.
Clive James is a great humane man. The various broadcasts in the Postcards from . . . series were wonderful. I loved his conversation with the young Beatrice Dalle in Paris. What a beauty she was! And he was charming as always. He was certainly one of the best broadcasters of his time, though not as famous as some not as deserving.
what a great guy and lovely human he was clever, intelligent, kind, funny, Australian thanks Clive for being you you gave us so much in life now we can give you RESPECT god bless you and your family
Roddy Teague. A fair point. Perhaps when we approach death, despite huge failings which have hurt people, maybe we eventually become wiser people and realise we have been jerks.
Loved his semi-autobiographical books about his early life, funny and poignant. The eighties was looking forward to seeing him on tv so good memories, but tinged with sadness that a talent has gone. Thanks.
Im so amazed that in Clives poem " Japanese maple " he spoke that the maple will turn to flame ( im assuming thie mesns autumn ) andd continues to say that once it turns to flame that is the time he must go. Isnt it strainge.......he died in november , when all the leaves have fallen , just like he said in his poem. So beautiful. Even if i interpreted it wrong, i thought his poem was a beautiful piece of poetry. I miss you Clive, thank you for everythibg you gave us . Rest in peace wnd no mire pain. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Rip mate from an Australian who loved your books and the people that have had the chance to read them have become better. I read unreliable during high school and have never laughed so much in my life. Life in Australia will never be the same.
A sensitive interview, also truthful.I like Clive James's poetry. Charlie. Stayt reads the poems very well. 'Japanese Maple'-very good analogy with the human condition.'There is no hell or heaven to worry about'.
I'm re watching his - Clive James a postcard from ............." series - awesome man, we will miss your humour, way with words and insightful observations.
When our time comes viewers I hope we can be so brave ,an inspiration to us not so young brigade ,the message he gives to me is do not give up on life ,keep busy in things you believe in and absorb more of life. Ms cdf UK God bless u Clive a treasure to the world you depart RiP

A beautiful man in every possible way. From my heart to yours may you find strength and peace you clever, gorgeous, sexy, funny man. Thank you for your contribution to this strange old life of mine. Love always Clive ~ Joanie x
and Clive could have come back the next year, and the next and the next. Sad to hear of his passing recently, yet another bright mind extinguished. There seem to be fewer every day...
One of the funniest and most intelligent men that ever lived. A life well lived, and towards the end of his produced poetry that might even rival his beloved Larkin........the bloody larrikin that he was.
There are no bigger Questions...... Life itself is the mystery , and everything that happens within life, is the real subject. And i think there's nothing beyond that. CLIVE JAMES
Sad news today. Loved his voice, his wit and his intelligence. Great bloke!

Hear, hear.
Very well said. I , too, applaud the interviewer.
+toff358 yes, very professional and respectful.
A brave interview for a brave man...... Clive would, I’m sure , have conducted the interview the same way as Mr Stayt.
it occurred to me watching him navigate through his questions that Charlie Stayt had no idea that he too would follow the same mortal path. Much younger than Clive and clueless. Understandable though.
RIP clive james, thank you for your wit, you will be missed.

What a good and remarkable gentleman.
Wonderfully done interview. Having had my own dance with death, I agree, Clive, what happens in life - stays in life.
I've always been a fan of Clive James, I couldn't believe it when I heard how ill he is. He looks well in this interview, I hope things get better for him. Good luck Clive, take care.
Clive James Rest in Peace.
Inspiring and full of light at a dark time
Clive is a true legend. A sad loss to the world now he has now gone.
"...the years have brought a fitting end. If not the one I sought". Great poem.
4 years later and he's still going, still writing. Remarkable.
4 months on and he's brown bread!
Great interview Charlie, rest peacefully Clive, you really nailed it right at the end (6:46)

A great chap who's entertained us so much. Life is a gift and he is a gift. 😊
He's a bloody legend
God bless Clive James TV Legend RIP⚘
Integrity in action. An outstanding, kind and humble man. We could do a lot worse than to learn from the dignity of this man.
Integrity?! He went behind his wife's back for eight years. It is wrong to have a sentimental regard for the dead just because they are dead.
Roddy Teague. A fair point. Perhaps when we approach death, despite huge failings which have hurt people, maybe we eventually become wiser people and realise we have been jerks.
@@michaelvout7813 Or possibly an each way bet from a man who previously had always professed himself an atheist...
"There are no bigger questions, life itself is the mystery" Clive James RIP
Awesome interview.
Thank you Clive for your wonderful series Fame in the 20th Century in 1993. As a child, I watched it, fascinated. The best history teacher I ever had.
A brilliant man who gave us the world R.I.P Clive James.
A great and at times a highly amusing broadcaster! Very sadly missed!
A great interview with the great man himself.

Very intelligent lovely man.
He certainly was one of our Australian adopted sons.
It must be nice to think in the way that Clive did about people and the world we all live in.
Very intelligent man, he entertained and educated us all over decades, sad to see him looking unwell, a great Austrailian export, thank you. 🇦🇺❤️😍❤️🇦🇺
Sad news RiP, we all learn lessons too late, I fear that no one will learn from his final honest and truthful words. Thank you for the great memories.

Always admired his point of view, his series "Fame in the 20th Century" is great, but nowhere to be found.
MerleOberon It’s on TH-cam but not great quality. Deserves a proper DVD release. Come on BBC!
