Grew up in the Central City area, neighborhood behind the old Stelmackies grocery store, in the 70’s. New Halls Ferry Rd and 270. The White Castle, just past 270 was where you went after midnight. A bag of belly bombers, cheese fries and we already had our own beverage (cold Busch beer and a OZ of something green.) KSHE blasting on the Jensen speakers. The 68 Camaro ready for a drag race… Makes me wish I was 16 again and not 62.
I first heard this on the radio in 1992 while working at Scott AFB, Illinois - which is in the greater St. Louis, MO listening area. I STILL think to this day that it is the GREATEST parody of a rock song ever recorded, Weird Al Yankovich notwithstanding!!!
Absolutely Hilarious! For the first several listenings to this song (on KSHE radio), I was 😂 laughing so hard, that it hurt my stomach! The great production on this, awesome music and obviously the fine voice talents of John Ulett (the U man) plus at least five others. Wonderful parody of Nights in White Satin, created for the St. Louis White Castle audience. Love ❤️ it! Thank you so much for providing this terrific content. Cheers.
I still listen every Monday through Thursday to J. C. Corcoran's podcast on Spotify, and he says his buddy Ulett still has the first dollar he ever made, so John's done quite well for himself, with two absolute dream jobs: Hosting shows on KSHE and being the Cardinals PA announcer. John and I are both grads of Broadcast Center in St. Louis. If there's such a thing as reincarnation I want to come back either as U-Man, or as Warren Beatty's fingertips.
Ive been looking for this for years..!!! Love it..l remember back in the 60's my Dad got pissed off because the hamburgers jumped up to 8 cents from 5 cents...LOL
I am like your dad now. I went through the drive through and it was like $12.00 for a meal. I didn't buy it and stopped going to White Castle. Too high and they use a hamburger box for the fries.
I love this!!!! I can remember when I heard it the first time...I was about 13(now 34)....this is so true!!!! gotta love those old st.louis white castle restaurants
Craig Hawksley ordering "...a Coke, with cheese" is hilarious!! I think I've been behind a guy in line like that in the past. Put cheese on EVERYTHING.
John Ulett singing? Sounds like it. I remember skipping classes at Kaskakskia College to go to Busch to buy '82 Cardinals playoff tickets. We stopped and loaded up on belly bombers, which was a good and bad thing--we stood in line for 8 hours to get tickets in the very last row of dead centerfield, so we needed the sustenance, but, God, my gut hurt!
A couple of years ago, I left the airport and headed down Natural Bridge, thinking about how my Dad would stop there in the '60s and we'd get those great little burgers. And surprise, there was that White Castle. Not just "a" White Castle, but "that" White Castle. I had to stop. I went in and placed an order. While waiting, a guy came in, made an order, started talking about how much he liked my jacket, and mentioning how a bunch of guys had been shooting at him further down on Natural Bridge, and that if his wife hadn't been telling him to get out of there, he would have started shooting back at them. My food came, and instead of taking a seat, I decided it was time for the car and LEAVE! Just as well, I hadn't noticed all the seating area had ribbons across to close them off. Now I settle for them from Sam's Club. No one shoots at you at Sam's Club.
We used to go window shopping down at Cherokee and Chippewa in the '50s with a visit to WC afterwards. As a side note, the house I was born in was at the corner of Bellefontaine and Harper Ln. It's now a White Castle. They say that a man's home is his castle, but this is over the top.
One thing I CAN say about White Castles, they NEVER EVER got my order wrong. Back in the day, it wasn't nothing to hear someone in the drive thru order burgers by the hundreds.
I remember when they were 14¢ at the South Kingshighway location by Venture. Been eating the greasy, onion covered MFers ever since. I'm old and I fart a lot.
Used to hit the one in Fenton on my way into drill at the Navy Reserve center up by Lambert. Only place that served burgers that early in the morning. I can't stand most traditional breakfast foods, but four double cheeseburgers and a large coffee were the perfect start for a day of drudgery and boredom.
Ha- when I was a kid I lived near the one they reference in the song- but I never ate one until I moved to the east. They're one of my 'guilty pleasures.'
I was just telling my wife about this and Don the Legend the other day, and I just stumbled on both of them on TH-cam. Thanks stlblair and Ken Suitter!!
Man, I haven't been to a White Castle in years. No locations particularly close to where I've lived since I moved to Chicago. I got a strong craving for belly bombers while I was pregnant when my mom posted a picture of the White Castle spread she and my step-dad got downtown one afternoon. Burgers, fries, drinks.
I don't know how you managed to find this song, which I believe Smash wrote the lyrics, Ulett sang and Hawksley did the spoken word. But any way, thank you thank you thank you.
I remember Art class in '78 when we used to listen to KSHE95 when Nights in white satin came on the the radio and someone ripped a fart and said "breathe deep" luckily for me I was 15 feet away and didn't get the aroma.
LMFAO. The guys at work on another shift get the big box every now and then. They don't get much done those days, and it is about 250 feet to the nearest restroom. Glad I don't do their laundry!
Need to bookmark this one, so I don't lose it again. And put it near "Fast Food" by Stevens and Grdnik. Either now, or after I find it. They belong together. "Double cheese burger, onion rings, and a large 'arange' drink! Say it!"
Sucks the old Maplewood building on Big Bend has been replaced with a newer building. Stopped in the Festus location recently, White Castle is no longer cheap. Then again what is cheap anymore ?
I always hated it when the customers asked for No Onions! My response REALLY If you ever worked at White Castle and cooked these things you know what I mean
"these people waiting too long" you don't hear that anymore at white castle. My dumbass friend wanted white castle one night and we legit spent an hour in the drive thru.
This song sucks. But if you grew up with white Castle through the blizzards and the the times you were so stoned out that you went to the porcelain palace. Then you'll give me a thumbs up. You just wanted to kill the guy in front of you that wanted 50.😀
***** I didn't say I didn't understand or that it wasn't funny. And I am from Columbus where their headquarters is and love White Castle sliders. Didn't say I didn't understand--I'm just saying that the Dan Orr Project originally did a song with this title and to the tune of Knights in White Satin. If you can find it online, check it out.
Da Blonde If I recall correctly, this was done about before the Dan Orr Project. (Dann Orr Project recorded Nights IN White Castle in 1995) This was John Ulett (DJ at K-she) and Craig Hawksley, a local comedian. This was before Craig Hawksley was doing a bunch of local tv commercials and voice acting. He did stand up solo and sometimes with Dan Chopin, also a local comedian with a musical aspect to his material. I'm pretty sure this was just a month or so before Grace Slick did a spoof on White Rabbit "Eat Your Fred" that was also later copied and done nationally.
When St.Louis was still fun.
This brings back sooo many memories. The good, bad, and the ugly.
I freaking still love this to this day lol.

U-Man's idea...written by Asher Benrubi (The Smash) and Craig Hawksley

That the U man singing this?
KSHE 95, Real Rock Radio.

Yup, Ulett singing...
Yeah, but they are soooo good going down!
Another reason why KSHE was the best station in the nation!
Love. Love. Love! High Schools' still live this one year after year!
I LOVED the Floor Show late nights! 🌙
I remember hearing this as a kid around 1986

In the 50's a neighbor took me and my sister to the one at Hampton and Chippewa....From what I remember they were $ .07. Back in the good old days.
Yep, 7 cents in the 60's at the one on Big Bend too.

I hung out many nights at White Castle. The one at Big Bend and Manchester...LOL
So did I. I probably know you. I'm taking it you went to M-RH ?
My old stomping grounds back in the day and this is still funny after all these years.

Four double cheese and a large chocolate shake, to be young again.
My favorite White Castle was the one on Vandeventer near Manchester Bank.
That's the one we use to go to, grew up at Lafayette and tower grove can remember 10 cents apiece late 60s early 70s ✌is it still there?

I went to MRH and grew up in Richmond Heights went there for lunch everyday during school.
Richmond Hts too, East Richmond, then M-RH Jr. High, lastly M-RH Senior High.

This was made back when St. Louis was a fun city to live in.
Sorry to hear you are no longer fun. The Lou has never been better!

I love that line! Hehe. 🤣
A great post brother blair
I have been to the White Castle at Big Bend but the location I went to in high school days was the one on Hwy 21 and Lindbergh Rd.
I'd love to have this as a Ring Tone lol
John Ulett at his best!
At Delmar & Hodamount, 8 cents in the late 50's!
Huh ? 7 cents at the one on Big Bend in the 60's, plus they had female car hops.

The band did a great job it’s very funny!✨🌀🎉
Do you guys remember the old pay toilets they had lol ✌5 cents to use the restroom
Broke even on the food, made the money on the pay toilets?

Just puked in the bathroom and and passed out on the floor. But God those cheese fries were worth it!!!!
Probably the last time Ulett did anything that was funny.

Kevin Matthews from WLUP Chicago did "Nights at White Castle" about 25 years ago, it was much better.

in north st. louis i ate there too
There's a reason they're called belly bombers. But they're cheap though.
That's what my Nana always called them. Those crinkle fries.
They WERE cheap way back when. They are 87 cents a piece now.

Boudicea99 It is really a parody of a mash up of Nights in White Satin and Late Lament both from Days of Future Passed
