Calling Rey a Mary Sue grinds my gears - she's no more of one than Luke Skywalker but he doesn't get that same label. Either they both are or neither are - you could argue it either way For me, if the character being a Mary Sue makes sense in backstory etc then it's fine, if it's just ME SPECIAL then no thanks
As always, none of the "rules" are "always bad" either...sometimes, yeah, a Mary Sue is pretty boring. But you could easily call the protag of He Who Fights With Monsters a Gary Stu, at least early on, because he makes friends so easily and doesn't get the stuffing beat out of him by the people around him when he probably should. But I love that series. It makes me laugh. Listening to some of these rules, especially that bit about Save The Cat, reminds me of an episode of Simpsons.
