Awesome job. Looks great. My Dad built a strip canoe in 1974 when I was 9 years old. I was put to work sanding. No power tools. Turned out great. I just recently went and got it from my Dad.
Varnish. I feel for you. The pros all seem to sponge roller a lightly thinned mix on then use a method called tipping. Brush after the rolling. I mention because it will need doing again in time. It's all on utube and works(for them) brilliantly. The water bits the best though and it's great for that.. Well done.
Super job - we live in NI Antrim - though are meant to be sea kayaking portrush next Sat if the weather is good.. You never know.... Have been following your build from the beginning..... A big achievement... Congrats on building a beautiful canoe!
Looks amazing Andy! I'm in the process of building my own. How much varnish did you go through? Also, are there any particular brands you would recommend? Varnishing is the process I'm least looking forward to. Thanks
Thanks for the comment - good luck with your build! I think I used about 3 X 750ml tins of "International Compass" (no harm over-buying, as it'll need re-varnished now and again in the future). It's pretty good stuff. I got it from a local chandlery store in Belfast after discussing with the owner - I don't have any real experience or opinions of my own! I know 2-pack might be more durable, but like you I was dreading it, so went with the simpler option. My canoe is stored indoors anyway so it's not exposed to sunlight when not in use.
Just about to varnish mine now. Thanks again for the videos Andrew... ...couldn't have built mine without them.
Well done! Glad my videos helped 👍
AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME!!! I just binge watched your entire series... Such an awsome accomplishment...

Amazing, I hope you get some (more) good use from it.
Well Done !! Building a Cedar Strip Canoe is a bucket List item for me. Just binge watched the entire build. From Kansas
Glad you enjoyed it. There's never a better time to start than now...!

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely want to do a better job when I re-varnish it this winter - guess I'll need to go down the TH-cam rabbit hole!
I used a penetrating epoxy on any bare wood to totaly encapsulate all the wood frome water before varnish.

Thanks Victor! Sea kayaking definitely sounds good but if that's rained off you'd be welcome to join us. Most likely late afternoon, Oxford Island 👍

It looks great. If you want to come and do my sanding I'll do your varnishing.
Haha, did you have to pick job #2 on the list of hate? Haven't you got any dovetails that need cut? Or I could make you a chopping board?
I was just telling my wife that finishing work is my least favourite. Apparently, I’m not alone.
Satisfying once it's done though.
