Wonderful video and so authentic! We always had fried smelts, shrimp, etc. at Grandma’s on Christmas Eve. My Mom used to stuff calamari with rice and she would bake them. After midnight Mass we were at the Grandparents again for homemade sausage. I don’t know how they did it eating that late! I’m making my Mom’s manicotti recipe for Christmas dinner. Always loved the Mummers parade.💜🎄
Hi Dawn!! I grew up in a predominantly Italian neighborhood in Princeton N.J. I remember all of the wonderful foods and especially the Italian cookies that our neighbors would make. Enjoyed this, Dawn! I'm half Italian and being probably 50 miles from you, everything resonated here - we did it virtually word for word as you (including the card tables in the basement!). I inherited my blond hair and blue eyes from my half Irish side though so I always felt a bit different than everyone. My Italian grandmother however was honestly my best friend right up to her passing when I was 52!

After midnight mass at St. Joseph's, we had gram's fish feast. Dad had 4 sisters with families so gram's little house was bursting at the seams.The cousins played while the adults played pinochle. That is the word I grew up with and always called it Gravy as an adult. Then I started following "Hardcore Italian" channel on Instagram and the controversy started, haha. I grew up in a predominantly Italian neighborhood and have so many wonderful memories of the holidays. Not so much the seven fishes, but oh the Italian cookies!!! We would get trays of pizelles and the other cookies. I never knew their names, they were always Italian cookies to us. My sister and I both had cookie cakes at our weddings along with a regular cake.
I don’t know what it is, but I love hearing Italians pronounce food. I’ve always been jealous of the love Italian people have for food. My heritage is German and British…I’ve got no hope 🤣
Kalamari is also the Greek word for squid. I used to love it but more than 10 years ago I became vegan and I don’t eat fish or squid either.I have seen the most fantastic documentary about a man and an octopus. It was mind changing..I cried so much,it was beautiful. It’s called “My Octopus Teacher”. If you have some time,you should see it,it fantastic! The evil eye, and welita (grandmother) or my mom would do what we called, cura cure with the raw egg 🥚 they would recite prayers etc. The myth is you must touch the person, item etc if you really are enamored with it/them or you will give the evil eye. Oh my gosh Dawn, I forgot about the malocchio and the baccalà!!!! My grandmother used to do it, and my mother knows it too. She still does it on me when I'm not feeling well 😊 So funny how they can tell if you've been affected by a male or a female by the way the oil reacts in the water! And yes the "corni"!!!! Yes my ex mother-in-law used to cook the baccalà in sauce, we call it sauce here. I found it interesting how you say "calamad"? I suppose it's the Sicilian dialect.

I'm Part Italian as well. All my italian family live in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I'm half Japanese. quarter Italian and quarter Welsh. I was never raised italian. I was raised in Japan so. Both of my parents are from Italy. I lived there for a bit. I love the Italian culture. My parents haven't done the 7 fishes in a few years. There is always an overabundance of food no matter what day of the year

Such cool traditions. In Argentina, although my grandparents were Italian, the traditions did change-but fish is still very much part of it … I was not a fan. Now we do pastas here 😂
My mother in law was half Italian, although you would think she was 100%, and my mother was 100% Italian. My mother was the baker. She could bake any Italian cookie, cake, pie you could think of. My mother in law was the cook. On Christmas Eve we would have baccala salad and angel hair with lobster sauce. She would also make meatballs and chicken Parmesan for those who didn’t eat fish. My husband can remember having smelts on Christmas Eve, but before we met. We always had Christmas Eve at my mother in laws house,and my children, who are grown with their own families, still talk about the wonderful food and all of the fun with their cousins.
