This intro is A++. The way you speak about this movie, your passion and enthusiasm is radiating through the screen and makes me want to sit and watch it again :)
Absolutely! My all time fav. When it first came out it was like gazing into the screen at an alternate universe where everything was perfect & SO right.🎃
A absolute classic!! When I was younger I never cared for westerns and I couldn't understand how my dad would watch them especially EASTWOOD classic's but now I love them and this is one I really want and people have found several of his westerns at dollar tree stores! I never get lucky but I rarely get out due to my handicap but I definitely need more Eastwood classic's.
“Lord of the Rings for the western genre.” Dude, that is the perfect description. Leone came in and blew everything else away. These three films have never been surpassed and probably never will be.
Now this is the 4k review we need! Cereal at midnight bringing the goods again! Not scripted or just rehashing information which can be found on the net true passion
Yay! My favourite move in 4k! I'm happy it's the Theatrical cut on 4K. I've ordered it just now via my local movie store rather than going online just to give them some business and to make sure I get a copy! I haven't done my annual watch of the film in a long time so this will be a great reason to watch it. Great video!
Heath, Thank You very much for the appreciation for this wonderful film! My dad introduced me to the The Dollars Trilogy when I was young. So for me it was The Beatles, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and baseball. A lot of the films greatness comes from Ennio Morricone who is still my favorite film composer. The soundtrack still gives me chills. And I agree with you about the grain. The grain IS the film. Leave it alone. I have this on preorder and hopefully the other two will be on the way for a 4K treatment in the future.
In this case, it's more that MGM thought the 2014 Blu-ray is "good enough". And now Kino's 4K looks to be the greatest and most accurate representation of the International Cut since LaserDisc.
Can't wait for my copy to arrive in the mail. I absolutely adore film grain and love how a quality 4K scan of an original camera negative really gives the image a projected feel rather than a digital display.
Been waiting for this on 4K ..the Blu Ray looks very good ...I was lucky enough to watch the actual movie in my university theatre ...and yes on a movie screen it's awesome..
The good the bad and the ugly, second best western ever, after Once apoun a time in the west. Thank you, so very much for your review, on this power house of a movie. your passion for this film is clear, and thank the gods for film grain, it gives movies much more depth and clarity. I also am a Film freak, so thank god i am not alone out there. Keep up your great reviews.
It’s funny, I used to prefer a director’s cut anytime I could get it because I always wanted to experience a film in the way the director fully intended. Over the years I have swayed to wanting theatrical cuts because I want to see it the way it was originally released. That’s how you preserve the film as part of history. Once I get that, ttthhheeennn gimme that director’s cut.
Heath I actually watch all three once a month......And hell yes Kino Lorber did an amazing job on the 4K release....I cant wait to get the first two on 4K.....!!!!!
What more can be said about this beloved classic movie? Newcomers need to know that the movie takes its time, but when we get to the climatic scene, the Mexican standoff, it all pays off. The directing, the acting, the cinematography, the editing, the score, all combine for the greatest scene in the history of movies. I envy those who see it for the first time in this presentation.
I watch a lot of 4K and I don’t think the lack of HDR is particularly noticeable. This film is almost entirely brown, green, and gray. The added resolution goes a long way.
I was on the fence about this since I knew it didn't have everything the 30th anniversary blu-ray had, but after seeing your review, you've convinced me, the 4k it is! Thanks Heath!
i always preferred Once Upon a Time in the West over this one, most likely because that was the first Leone film I watched. But either is a masterpiece.
I couldn't agree with you more. This is one of my favorite westerns of all time (tied with Once Upon a Time in the West). I enjoy all three films, but, this film has everything you would want in a western/action film. Some fans complain that the running time is too long, hey, to each their own. I prefer the theatrical cut to the extended cut. No matter, this is one great film, and, it looks great in 4K as well. I have the Blu Ray and the 4K edition and the 4K really does this movie justice. Love your movie site, by the way. I'm not only a movie collector but I also enjoy my movies as well.
I detect a what MAY be a yellow push in certain scenes, and I think this is the same transfer from the Blu a year or so ago, but completely uncompressed.
@@CerealAtMidnight despite the controversy around these colour gradings for all three Dollars films these were done based on what the original visions for these films were. I read that Cineteca di Bologna consulted cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli some years back before he passed away and also used old Italian Technicolor prints as a reference. I Makes sense.... You wouldn't just make up your own colour timings for such a beloved movie without doing your due diligence!
I’ve heard this too. Ultimately it’s why I steered clear of the conversation, because those who want to hate it will hate it and those who love the movie will buy it anyway. There’s so much bickering about intended color timing, but we all know it’s this or nothing. Nobody else is going to be releasing the film, and it’s notable that the studio licensed the film out instead of releasing it themselves. Anybody who would avoid this film because of something they heard in a review about color timing was probably never going to buy it anyway. I wanted to focus as much as possible on the film itself, which has never EVER looked better. Probably not even on opening day in 1967-1968.
@@CerealAtMidnight agreed. Too much of an echo chamber mentality online about too many things without actual fact checking. As far as I am concerned if the studio responsible for the colour grading and other aspects of the restoration have consulted the actual cinematographer and checked original Italian prints then that's good enough for me to trust that what I see is trying to preserve the original vision as closely as possible. Any one else's personal OPINION is irrelevant to the directors and cinematographers vision! I for one am super excited about this release and can't wait to see it! Just have to wait a bit longer for it to make its way down under but will be worth the wait!
As it turns out, I reached out to Kino for clarification and they told me an additional 30 hours of color correction has been done to this 4K transfer since the previous release, so now the question becomes "do the people who complained about the previous color timing accept the new adjustments to bring it more in line with how people expect it to look, or do they keep complaining?"
I agree with you that the theatrical cut of a film is the one more worthy of preservation in an historical context but in this specific case the longer cut is the theatrical cut which is the original italian domestic version that came out in 1966. The international shorter cut came out a year later and Leone was forced to cut some scenes to comply with United Artists request for a shorter version.
Hey, thank you Mike! A lot of those Kino movies behind me have been covered on the channel. There’s even a Kino Lorber playlist on the main Cereal AtMidnight TH-cam page. Glad to have you here!
This is another no-brainer for me. Love this movie. It has that perfect combination of realism and suspension of disbelief from the Old West. The music is also stellar, absolutely stellar.
I too agree with you in the make grain more smooth. No leave it as it was. That is what film looks like. Never understood why some people have problem with it. I got the old dvd R1, never got it in BD, so I will be getting this XD. We have to support KINO for this. Bravo KINO. I would LOVE to criterion get their hands on this...
I have been a fan of movies of all genres and eras since i am a kid.i think your channel is great.have to say since people have started saying good, bad and the ugly the best western ever,it makes my stomach turn.its the least of leones westerns and irs an eli wallach film not an eastwood film.
I am excited about this movies 4K release and have it pre-ordered on Amazon. May be my number 1 western of all time. Some people don't like spaghetti westerns and I get that. They just don't get how these movies were made. Sergio Leoni films are like an opera with their long dramatic pre gunfight scenes that seem to go on forever such as the end gunfight in this movie. Spaghetti westerns changed how all western movies are made. They revived what was becoming a dying cinema genre. For some reason the Italians fell in love with western movies as the French fell in love with Jerry Lewis comedies and I am glad that they made westerns in their own inimitable style and yes Sergio Leoni and Ennio Morricone were at the top of their game with this one and went on to make others where they were continuing to be at the top of their game with Once Upon A Time In The West and A Fistful Of Dynamite which are masterpieces in their own right.
A release like this is aimed not only at the completist, but also the student seeking to learn from the masters of the craft. Another great video - Thanks!
With the MGM Blu Ray, the 4K-level restoration made the *picture quality itself* look fantastic, BUT then they put ugly tints/filters all over it that made the colors look absolutely hideous :( Kino (with their previous Blu Ray) seemed like they just took that same transfer and tried to "fix" the colors, but it just ended up looking desaturated/washed out. That is why I was excited about the announcement of this 4K, maybe we would FINALLY get the colors ACTUALLY fixed and not looking ugly! Before I buy this 4K though, I am going to wait until I am able to see proper screenshot comparisons with previous Blu Rays so I can compare and get an idea of what the color on the 4K looks. The colors on the Mad Max and Spaceballs 4K from Kino seemed to look good though, so I have hope that the colors will be better and actually fixed this time.
This appears to be the same transfer that Kino put on Blu-ray a year or so ago. It’s definitely not ugly (it’s beautiful), but the color issues that were controversial then are still in the conversation.
@@CerealAtMidnight Ehhh, that’s a shame... :/ I guess I will indeed have to wait and see for screenshot comparisons to get a better idea of how the color compares to the Blu Rays, but I was hoping we would actually get a high-quality version with GOOD, accurate colors so it seems like it might be disappointing...
@@CerealAtMidnight Ah ok cool, thanks for the update. I definitely look forward to seeing what the new coloring looks like (I do think it will be better than before)
Can’t wait for this. I must admit I love the extended edition but if I had to choose only one I’d opt for the theatrical as well. I still have the collectors DVD version from 2004 and I remember seeing the extra scenes in the extended edition for the first time. It was exciting as I had seen the movie about 25 times without it. I was mesmerized ... I still have the VHS copy too. I have the MGM 2009 blu ray version and was about to get the KL 2017 50th anniversary edition when I heard the movie was coming out this month in 4k. I wonder if the KL 2017 is the same as the blu ray disc included with the 4k This is my favourite movie of all time tied with Star Wars Ep IV. I have watched the GBU 2-3 times a year, every year. Since getting that original VHS. :)
hopefully electronics manufacturers and movie theaters will come to an agreement and make 8k a theater exclusive file size, because as a retail format 8k is just impractical. Most people can't own a tv large enough for 8k to make a difference.
Exactly! The idea of us all watching 8K home entertainment seems very unpractical. And when most movies are still lacking a solid 2K scan, it's the idea of 8K as a home media format doesn't seem likely. HD snobs already complain about how many dated transfers there are that the studios have no plans to re-scan. Yes, people are working on 8K TVs, but will the public adopt those as any sort of standard over the next few years? I can't imagine so, and even if they do, there's not going to be much 8K content to watch on those televisions. Possibly sports, but films? Streaming? I just can't see it any time soon, maybe ever.
Yes. Someone is going to say that the extended cut should have been in 4K, but I appreciate that they went with the theatrical cut. All the extra scenes are on the Blu-ray disc, too.
Great review man and this is my favorite film ever and I have it on so many formats and double and triple etc dips on the same format and hell yes finally the 4K disc is Amazing and hopefully the others in the Dollar’s trilogy get 4K releases soon! Also loved your Django review another of my favorite films!
I think every Western review should begin like that. Where is Westerns spotlight part 2?!?! While I do love The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, to me Leone's masterpiece is Once Upon a Time in the West, a film that was somehow eclipsed by its more popular/famous brother. I suppose you've seen it, Heath? And about the grain... i love grain, I'm a grain head. I love everything that brings out the physicality and tactile presence of film.
Man, I think I recommended Once Upon a Time in the West in Western Spotlight Vol. 1! The main reason I did (besides the fact that it's fantastic) is that it's often eclipsed by the Dollars trilogy in terms of cultural awareness. Good, Bad, and Ugly is probably more "pop" than OUaTitW (it's almost a comic book movie), which makes it more approachable, but the latter movie is a more complete, singular story and feels more...mature? If we ever get that on 4K and I get to do a full review, I'll be praising it like crazy. Western Spotlight #2 coming in 2026! Just kidding. I've got most of the movies in a stack just waiting to be discussed. Just gotta carve out the time to film it without bumping something from the schedule. I think before that video happens, there will be a spotlight on a certain war hero named Mr. Murphy who starred in quite a few westerns.
Late to this. I probably will buy this - or whatever the UK equivalent is. I was lucky enough to see it on a 35mm print at the Prince Charles Cinema in London. They did the full Dollars Trilogy over the course of a day. An amazing experience. And even though The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the last and longest of the trilogy it never dragged, even after the previous two films. Also I noticed, watching on the big screen, that when they Bridge blows up there's a piece of what looks like real stone that bounces damn close to the main cast. Superb film.
Glad to hear its great. Going for a triple dip with this bad boy. This film is a true master piece. As for grain, grain over ridiculous Paramount Presents To Catch a Thief style dnr all day every day.
Absolutely. It shouldn't even be something people debate. I don't get why you'd DNR a film and give a shitty waxy transfer just so that you satisfy a small percentage of people who hate grain (surely it's gotta be a small percentage? Surely?)
If people want to smooth out the grain, then they can turn down the sharpness on their TV. Don't mess it up for others, or buy the VHS version.. It's all kinds of blurry and "smooth".
I think the other two ever hitting 4K will depend on how well The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly sells. 4Ks are expensive to author and release, so the fandom really needs to show up for these if we want the other two. This is a release Kino had been planning a couple of years ago, but when their first 4K release (Hannibal) didn’t meet expectations, it delayed/postponed everything else. As I like to say, we vote with our wallets. Companies like Kino take a financial risk with releases like this, so it’s up to us to buy them, which opens the door for more in the future.
Does this version have the extended torture scene, Tuco’s grotto, extra desert scenes and the part where Angel Eyes visits the confederate fort etc? Thanks in advance 👍
It contains these scenes presented as extras, not incorporated into the cut of the film: Deleted Scene 1: Extended Tuco Torture scene Deleted Scene 2: The Socorro Sequence - A Reconstruction Deleted Scene 3: Skeletons in the Desert Deleted Scene 4: Extended Torture Scene Vignette 1: Uno, Due, Tre Vignette 2: Italian Lunch Vignette 3: New York Accent Vignette 4: Gun in Holster Alternate Scene: The Optical Flip
You will NEVER beat the original 35mm Film print in Techniscope 178 mins you must remember you are looking at digital images you could go on and on 4k /8k what ever will never look like the celluloid print on a giant Cinema screen in full Scope i showed this as a brand new 35mm print on 8 x 2000ft reels as a re issue in my cinema days as a Cinema Projectionist it was awsome most fans have never seen this on a Cinema screen their jaws would drop then if they think it looks good on a 55" Tv Screen and the mastro Ennio Morricones music one of the greatest westerns ever! I do like your entusiasum for this film its nice to see this! Classic film from a time now gone they just dont make them like this anymore im afraid to say my friend.
I enjoyed the Leone inspired opening. I will definitely get this release, but I wish the extended cut was available also. (I would much rather watch the deleted scenes incorporated in a version rather than as separate deleted scenes. I'm sure it is a licensing restriction.
I never understood why so many people complain about film grain. It's film,it's supposed to be grainy, especially the notoriously grainy Techniscope process!
I believe so, yes. My understanding is this is the exact same 4K transfer from the blu-Ray from a year or so ago. I think the yellow has been over-reported, or possibly it just looks more natural in 4K, as I do not like color timing adjustments that push old movies into particular hues, but I barely notice it here.
@@CerealAtMidnight they announced in their first press release, that it was undergoing a new scene by scene color correction, however the new correction is still starting from the 2014 yellow version, so it's not "from scratch" which would be ideal. But it is certainly better than the severe blue correction Kino attempted on their first blu ray of the film.
I can't say for sure, but they blew through that first 5,000 copies SO FAST. I'm hearing reports of some new inventory coming soon. Fingers crossed. It's just a matter of waiting for it to make it from the replicator, which can take a while, due to the demand.
PLEASE review Kino Lorber's 2023 version on this movie, reviews says its 4k, websites say 1080p. I truly need a definitive edition of the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Thank you
I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the super blown out contrast picture that this disc has in just about every other scene. Don't you think that was worth mentioning? Love the film and the grain, but man, the oversaturations here and there had me wanting to adjust my screen every 10 minutes. I think this presentation needs work. Not because of film grain. What do you think?
I don't see blown out contrast on my set-up. I think it looks darn close to stunning. When this review first went up, so few other people in my professional circle (other reviewers) had seen it, but day by day more and more of us are coming to the consensus that the movie looks magnificent on this new 4K edition. Not perfect, no, but better than any home media presentation EVER. I think some things might come down to each viewer's player specifications, TV capabilities, and set up.
@@CerealAtMidnight OK, thanks. I'll take another look at my settings. Btw, I didn't mean to say that this version doesn't look better than all the previous disc.
Cool, hope you can find a way to get it looking as good as it can! Disc reviews are a tricky thing, as there are so many variables from system to system. I have two 4K set-ups (a TCL and an LG), and they are not the same. The LG doesn't look nearly as good as the TCL. It's one of the reasons I try not to get too bogged down in the technical aspects and focus more on the movie itself when I do these reviews. If I say something looks great, someone will say "no it doesn't." And if I say it should look better, someone says "it looks great!" There may be some crushed blacks on the 4K, but I've seen some people also say it has milky blacks. Who knows! :)
"The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" is fine for those who live in the USA. For those who live in the UK and elsewhere, importation of the disc set is pricey. Also, here in the UK, many people are unable to play the extended Blu-Ray version! Both discs ought to have been 4K. For some reason a fair number of films are USA release only. This hardly helps physical format.
That’s too bad. HDR is not a be-all, end-all, and the movie has literally never looked this good int the history of home entertainment. The more the reviews come in, the more we all agree it’s a huge leap forward.
For some reason, so many 4K releases I find have terrible unnatural colors like those you see in most current movies this release sadly is no exception, from what screen captures in reviews have revealed. Sorry, can't buy it then as I know I wouldn't enjoy it so I'm keeping what I already have bought on different formats in the past.
Just remember I took the screenshots with my phone pointed at the screen (as mentioned in the video). They aren't meant to show any sort of 4K representation. Every review for this that I've seen agrees with me that the film has never looked better. Do what you wish, but please don't use my screenshots as your litmus test.
@@CerealAtMidnight Wasn't those screen shots, I saw it on dvdbeaver and couldn't believe my eyes. We get used quickly to new things and seem to accept stuff we normally wouldn't, flock impact they call it. I think, 20+ years ago people would've been up in arms had a DVD been uniformly timed this way.
@@CerealAtMidnight There's still some yellow there that just wasn't present in older releases. Personally, I think this new release looks awful and I very much doubt this is the intended or even close to the original look. Movies just didn't use these ghastly uniformed color schemes back in the day, this is a modern day trend that is fact so no fan boy mentality flourishing out there on the Internet can convince me otherwise, I don't really care what the masses say because (A) these people must be colorblind or (B) they don't really give a damn. Most movie critics today, are basically fan boys themselves with no real knowledge of film history. I'm also weary of the talk of filmmakers themselves getting involved - only for this to be what they end up with; a downgrade, essentially a colorization of color movies how twisted can it get. You can sometimes get lost in trends and back-patting if you're in this industry, look at Scorsese's last few decades to name one there's dozens of famous directors all of a sudden doing things you'd never see them ok years before. I agree with the OP here on 4K grading in general, there's something off about it and I really have no doubt it's done so to give these movies a 'acceptable' look more in line with current movies. They really do this to certain big cult hits, believe it or not if the title's cool or trendy enough. Big mistake, isn't it enough that current stuff is butt ugly why mess with the classics that's where I get off the boat.
My biggest letdown is oddly enough with the discs themselves. For $30 I'd sure like it if some effort was made to make the discs look presentable, rather than just slapping the title and KL on them with a plain background and have that be it. Same goes for the menu which is just a static image and text, which is a far cry from the interactive nature DVD's used to once have.
I highly doubt there will ever be 8K discs, the market will just be so small. 4K is only just about viable. I suspect there will be 8K digital and streaming, but that's a long way off and given that most people are happy with DVD quality, standard definition, higher resolutions are probably always going to be enthusiast aimed, which is always going to be a small market.
Great intro to this vid, very entertaining and nice way to highlight your love and passion for this film. Firstly yes, I'm upgrading. I have KLs previous releases of the Dollars trilogy but have already pre-orderd this 4k upgrade as it's one of my favourite films of all time and I understand your passionate praising of this film. Secondly I just don't get people who hate film grain and are happy to see something filmic DNRed to death 😳 to remove grain even if it's going to leave a waxy look. That is the devil's work. It's a crime against cinema. If you like film then you like film and should appreciate the historical aspects that come with it. Why would you only limit yourself to watching HD Blu Ray Ray digitally shot modern films only or just 4k even? Seems bizarre to me and I can't grasp it. That's like saying let's get rid of Tolkien's written copies of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings because we can watch it on telly and don't need to read it. Or at least what I mean is it's the same level of cultural and artistic vandalism. I don't get it but anyway, I know there are people out there with this viewpoint but for me personally it's a staggering viewpoint and beyond comprehension. Great vid and can't wait to get my copy and I haven't actually watched it for a while so will be a good excuse to revisit it. I wonder if KL will release 4k versions of A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More? As much as I love TGTBATU I actually prefer For A Few Dollars More so would love to see it get a native 4k release. Cheers!
Thanks for the sub, James! This movie is simply the best. A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More will be hitting 4K in a few months and I can't wait!

It’s kind of sad that now boutique labels are putting big studio titles on 4k because the big studios won’t put them out
In this case, it's more that MGM thought the 2014 Blu-ray is "good enough".
And now Kino's 4K looks to be the greatest and most accurate representation of the International Cut since LaserDisc.
If by "sad" you mean "awesome", then I agree.
Really, nothing sad about it.

What about the color grading? The main issue with previous releases is that the colors aren't what they should be.
This made me laugh and was a better review than other channels have. First time subscriber. And look at all those KL dvds back there, dude!
Hey, thank you Mike! A lot of those Kino movies behind me have been covered on the channel. There’s even a Kino Lorber playlist on the main Cereal AtMidnight TH-cam page. Glad to have you here!
Beautiful review. My mind is at peace . So glad I preordered it. The cover art on here is great.
I love this movie. Certainly one of the five top westerns and one of the best movies ever made.
I just wish we could get Once upon a time in the west and the Wild Bunch on uhd next.
It will happen, Once Upon a Time has amazing tone!
This is another no-brainer for me. Love this movie. It has that perfect combination of realism and suspension of disbelief from the Old West. The music is also stellar, absolutely stellar.
My favorite movie of all time. Can't wait til my 4k edition comes in the mail!!
Anybody notice that poster has the wrong Van Cleef on it? That's Mortimer from For A Few Dollars More.
Sir, 4k versión have spanish subs? Or only English audio and subs?
Can you confirm that the blu ray is the new 4k transfer and not the old Kino lorber disc? Thanks!
I believe it is, but I don’t have the old Kino disc to compare, only the MGM disc.
That's very astutely said, Nathan. Cheers to you.
@@CerealAtMidnight Good day to you too, my friend.
@@CerealAtMidnight I realize my comment comes off as some lame attempt at sounding zen...totally not my intention. Lol
Hahaha! Namaste! 😎
Can't wait for mine to come
Great film. I actually found that MGM blu-ray at the Dollar tree. That makes it pretty easy to upgrade to 4k.
UPDATE: NOT the same transfer from the previous release. 30 additional hours of color correction of this new 4K version.
@@CerealAtMidnight Ah ok cool, thanks for the update. I definitely look forward to seeing what the new coloring looks like (I do think it will be better than before)
Aaha, wanna see washed out, come on over an we'll sit n watch my '87 video tape.
I definitely had that burden of expectation thing with Pulp Fiction but after a couple re-watches godamn I love that movie
You've convinced me - I really need to get into these ones of Eastwood
Charley Varrick...Top 3 movie ever!
I wonder if the KL 2017 is the same as the blu ray disc included with the 4k
This is my favourite movie of all time tied with Star Wars Ep IV.
I have watched the GBU 2-3 times a year, every year. Since getting that original VHS. :)
imagine showing it on an IMAX movie theatre
hopefully electronics manufacturers and movie theaters will come to an agreement and make 8k a theater exclusive file size, because as a retail format 8k is just impractical.
Great review! I know some Kino titles have been in Best Buy stores, I wonder if this one will show up there as well...
Yes, let's support the physicals.
Hello,
Could you point me to the audio tracks on this UHD ? Only english track ?
English 5.1 and English mono.
@@CerealAtMidnight OK thanks
would you say this release version is the best version?
@@CerealAtMidnight Oh you did? Now I need to watch that review again.... a war hero named Murphy? Hmm....
Is it region free? I’ve read that some recent 4K titles have been region locked.
I'm sorry, I can't answer. If I see something, I'll report back!
This is interesting to me too! I would like to ”support” to get rest films also. But i also want too see it also!
Glad to hear its great. Going for a triple dip with this bad boy. This film is a true master piece. As for grain, grain over ridiculous Paramount Presents To Catch a Thief style dnr all day every day.
Great review thanks. I heard there is no HDR on the disc?
That’s correct.
must buy
Film grain all the way! :-)
Absolutely. It shouldn't even be something people debate. I don't get why you'd DNR a film and give a shitty waxy transfer just so that you satisfy a small percentage of people who hate grain (surely it's gotta be a small percentage? Surely?)
A L L THE W A YYY!!
If people want to smooth out the grain, then they can turn down the sharpness on their TV. Don't mess it up for others, or buy the VHS version.. It's all kinds of blurry and "smooth".
I have the trilogy pack on DVD I definitely want to upgrade to the 4K. I’m wondering if the other two will get a 4K release what do you think Heath?
I think the other two ever hitting 4K will depend on how well The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly sells. 4Ks are expensive to author and release, so the fandom really needs to show up for these if we want the other two. This is a release Kino had been planning a couple of years ago, but when their first 4K release (Hannibal) didn’t meet expectations, it delayed/postponed everything else. As I like to say, we vote with our wallets. Companies like Kino take a financial risk with releases like this, so it’s up to us to buy them, which opens the door for more in the future.
I've had this pre-ordered on amazon for a few months. Hope they ship it out soon
Does this version have the extended torture scene, Tuco’s grotto, extra desert scenes and the part where Angel Eyes visits the confederate fort etc? Thanks in advance 👍
It contains these scenes presented as extras, not incorporated into the cut of the film:
Deleted Scene 1: Extended Tuco Torture scene
Deleted Scene 2: The Socorro Sequence - A Reconstruction
Deleted Scene 3: Skeletons in the Desert
Deleted Scene 4: Extended Torture Scene
Vignette 1: Uno, Due, Tre
Vignette 2: Italian Lunch
Vignette 3: New York Accent
Vignette 4: Gun in Holster
Alternate Scene: The Optical Flip
Mmmm, 35mill from an original negative, dreamy
I enjoyed the Leone inspired opening. I will definitely get this release, but I wish the extended cut was available also. (I would much rather watch the deleted scenes incorporated in a version rather than as separate deleted scenes. I'm sure it is a licensing restriction.
Excellent video.
Great keep doing your thing
And what about "Once Upon a Time"? Another masterpiece from Leone.
Enjoyed this review the wonders of film are limitless.
Which of the audio options do you prefer the most?
I always prefer original theatrical audio whenever possible. So in this case, 2.0.
I never understood why so many people complain about film grain. It's film,it's supposed to be grainy, especially the notoriously grainy Techniscope process!
Is it the yellow shade transfer?
I believe so, yes. My understanding is this is the exact same 4K transfer from the blu-Ray from a year or so ago. I think the yellow has been over-reported, or possibly it just looks more natural in 4K, as I do not like color timing adjustments that push old movies into particular hues, but I barely notice it here.
@@CerealAtMidnight It's NOT the same transfer as 2017. It's been re-color corrected again.
This is good news! Explains why I don’t notice much of a push. Do you have a source for this?
@@CerealAtMidnight they announced in their first press release, that it was undergoing a new scene by scene color correction, however the new correction is still starting from the 2014 yellow version, so it's not "from scratch" which would be ideal. But it is certainly better than the severe blue correction Kino attempted on their first blu ray of the film.
I see it! 30 hours of color correction.
Did this 4K disk just set a record for going out of print? Don't you think they'll print another round soon? I hope.
I can't say for sure, but they blew through that first 5,000 copies SO FAST. I'm hearing reports of some new inventory coming soon. Fingers crossed. It's just a matter of waiting for it to make it from the replicator, which can take a while, due to the demand.
@@CerealAtMidnight thanks for your reply. Well, if there is a next time, I know to strike fast.
PLEASE review Kino Lorber's 2023 version on this movie, reviews says its 4k, websites say 1080p. I truly need a definitive edition of the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Thank you
The 4K came out in 2021. They released the Blu-ray in 2023.
@@CerealAtMidnight are you saying what came out in 2021 wasn't Blu-ray

Love your intro! :)
le jour et la nuit en 4K hello from the France
One of my favorite movies. I love how the civil war is going on through the whole movie while there looking for that soldiers gold.
No HDR; so I canceled my pre-sale
That’s too bad. HDR is not a be-all, end-all, and the movie has literally never looked this good int the history of home entertainment. The more the reviews come in, the more we all agree it’s a huge leap forward.
I didn't really like the extended cut of the film, the extra scenes didn't really work for me 🤷♂️
The theatrical cut is perfect for me
I agree. More is not always better, and there’s a lot to be said for a leaner running time. It’s a long movie already.
The DVD Beaver review is glowing. They call it "stellar" and commend the more uniform color representation, which the prior yellow transfer inhibited.
The critique here would seem to be in order, take a look at the new review on bluraydotcom I personally think it looks dreadful... :-(
My biggest letdown is oddly enough with the discs themselves. For $30 I'd sure like it if some effort was made to make the discs look presentable, rather than just slapping the title and KL on them with a plain background and have that be it. Same goes for the menu which is just a static image and text, which is a far cry from the interactive nature DVD's used to once have.
I'd rather have thr extended cut in 4k.
Cheers!
I prefer film grain
