Sub group your drums, just bass, subgroup guitars, and other instruments. Then vocals. Building the mix dry then last add your reverbs, ext. on sends. That’s what I have learned for me works

Great video, especially for indie-start up's like us. To offset some of our lack of cashflow, we use mostly plugins. Currently, we're using Wave's Abbey Studio 3, and there is a noticeable improvement in our mixes. Undoubtedly, experience is a controlling factor when you approach any mix. Speaking of experience, just a tip for your viewers: You produced/mixed one (or several) of MC Solaar's commercial releases. Historically, he's considered the greatest French Rapper alive to date. I first heard him back in the early 90's on the late GURU's (R.I.P.) Jazzmatazz Vol. 1. I'm an old Gangstarr fan, and I was a D.J. back in the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Back then, my gear was a 4 track Tascam mixer, a Casio keyboard with 2 1 second sample banks, and a JVC radio for recording and routing. Things sure have changed. Again, thanks for the tips, they help us immensely. HMC

    Great stuff again.
When you say you mixed on those $100 monitors, surely you also did listening on other speakers with some lower frequency capability, or with a sub?
    Thanks!

Big thanks for a very interesting discussion. However, I still must say that my game-changing thing had very little to do with technical aspects. The game-changer was just the stupid banal realization that I spend lots of time with music just because it's something I actually love and I'm supposed to love and when it stops being that, I move on, forget it and do something else for a while :) After that, I've always trusted my instincts only!

Exactly!!! love your comment!!! to everybody if you understand this comment, here youre getting gold advice. happened to me too... if you are not enjoying it, move on... nothing good comes from pushing yourself too far into doing something you abhor

Thanks for your nice comment :) ... I also feel it's very healthy to just let the ears rest for a while now and then. Music producers and people who work or just spend lots of time with music shouldn't narrow themselves to music only, IMHO, but also read books, watch movies, spend time in art galleries, go hiking or have a good deal of outdoors activity in order to give listeners something relevant by understanding what's going on generally. That way, it'll be easier to keep things fresh and branch out a little bit and find new ideas and styles.
