This was Geoff's first extensive work with green screen and it took him weeks to make it work. He thought at one point they'd have to reshoot but Kathy vetoed that soundly. He did it that way because the backdrop he'd ordered wouldn't be there in time for filming. There's a TikTok out there with Geoff singing Hairy (Barry) Gibb in falsetto while wearing a clone make up and hair. Hilarious!
There have been around 150 covers of this over the years, not including instrumental covers, (yes, I counted, I was curious) many were straight copies but there are also metal, rock, country versions etc. I think Geoff's is one of the best! First because of his gorgeous bass voice but also the makeup, costumes and background effects really told the story beautifully. Loved your reactions, always fun and entertaining, thank you! 🙂👍
@@ZhenYaoYin He's my home screen on my phone. Full length. I have a blank wall in my bedroom I made into my Halloween wall. Across the too is a cool Halloween banner. Under that is an 8x25 picture of all the Geoff's with the fire background. Under that I have a 5x7 of the ghost Riders logo with Halloween pictures on both sides.
So glad that you’re recovered! You’ve been missed. VoicePlay did bring out their Halloween video and it’s another one helmed by Layne. (See if you can recognize him!)
Always enjoy your reactions to Geoff! I had two favorite spots in this one. The first was the whistle. He also did the whistle in If I Were a Rich Man/Girl. We only saw it in silhouette, but I think it was definitely him, especially with this evidence that he can do it. Second favorite was the run up to the high Yippe yi ay! That was sweet!!
The version of this I knew, from my young days, was by Frankie Laine, in the early 60s, but it's been covered by many many people since the original in 1949, by the author, Stan Jones.
This was a fun video. I love watching y'all react to Geoff and VoicePlay. VP released a halloween video a couple of days ago. It's very good of course and funny. I didn't even recognize Layne at first.
There was an American comedy show a long while ago with three brothers. Two of them were named Daryl. Whenever they met a a new person the oldest brother would say "This is my brother Daryl, and this is my other brother Daryl." I wonder if that's where the idea came from.
The song's been covered by a lot of artists, the 2 most famous versions by Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins. It's basically an old C&W staple. As a kid, the message in the lyrics was always very unsettling to me, as it introduced me to a concept of Hell I had not yet considered: To be eternally punished by doing hard cowboy work, forever! "Cowboy change your ways today, or with us you will ride, trying to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies." Chilling!
Best known maybe, but no hits. And older folk for sure will remember the Vaughn Monroe or Outlaws one. Sons of Pioneer often mentioned too. Marty Robbins did it mid seventees and Cash only in 1998. I'm quite fond of the Peggy Lee one as well. Spike Jones did as expected a very weird take on it.
@@embran8486 For that matter, the Burl Ives one ain't bad, in a tenor-y sort of way, plus holding the honor of being the first cover of the song, after the original by the writer. 🤠
Listened to a few other versions of this song, and have to say I like Geoff's better than any of the others I listened to. And he puts so much time and effort into making these solo videos! The one thing I would change if I had a magic wand would be the ghostly solos. All 3 are sung by Jeoph (Fu Manchu moustache on the far right), both the first higher one and the two lower ones. I think it would have been more fun for the higher one to have been sung by one of the other Geoffettes - preferably Daryl (full beard and moustache, 2nd from left), especially since Geoff commented in the BTS video that he'd "never felt more manly" than when he was made up as Daryl!
Well it was in soundtrack of Blues Brothers 2000, the sequel to Blues Brothers, and of coure famously in Ghost Rider who btw i think was initially conceived in the comics because the creator liked the song
Blues Brothers 2000! That’s something I haven’t heard of in a while. Funnily enough I never watched the original, but the sequel used to always play on our local equivalent of cable TV (it was via satellite and we had HBO and Cinemax) 😎

No less than 13 covers released one year after it was written (1948). Only two true hits so far over the years by Vaughn Monroe (second cover of 1949 after Burl Yves) and Rock band Outlaws. Among those 13 covers in 1949 were legends as Bing crosby and Peggy Lee who covered it, as well as Stan Jones with his band. One year later Spike Jones, more than a decade later Marty Robbins and only in 1998 Johnny Cash. Also band Spiderbait covered it for the Marvel movie Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage.
Aside from this latest cover of the song, Spiderbait's cover of this was used in the ending credits of the Ghost Rider movie. Maybe that's where you recently heard it?
I hope the difficulties he had with the green screen editing doesn't put him off using them again. He had a little bit of green screen in Headless Horseman but this was by far his most complex attempt, and only did it this way because the backdrop he wanted wouldn't arrive in time. Looks like Layne edited the VP videos that used green screen, like Enemy and My Mother Told Me. I think that's Geoff whistling in Once Upon a Dream, as well as Rich Man.

Oh! Was Goff being left-handed something that he implied in “Way Down”? Now I need to go back and check 🤣
This song was famous long before Johnny Cash, but he did sing it.
