A bit late, but I want to share something about this game. Back in 2007, there was a small group of people that were dedicated filmmakers, which I was also a part of. We had podcasts, movie premiere nights, or reviews of movies released by users. It was so much fun. However due to life, lots of users stopped releasing movies. There's still a small amount of people who still release machinima, but it's not like before. Recently, the man that ran our website passed away. Those years were awesome, and I will always cherish them.
This is legit one of my all time favorite video game, I still got my disk copy of star maker, launch copy of the main game and the expansion. Just need to find a computer capable of playing it. Still wish lionhead studios was able to make more expansions and finish the console versions of the game before Microsoft bought them 😢
Shame it never got a digital release, same with Lionhead's Black & White series. Was extremely lucky to find a retail copy of The Movies for sale though I'm not so lucky with the expansion. Had a lot of fun playing this as a kid and still do play it now every once in a while since it's such a chill game and the video editor is fun to mess about with. I think my only issue with the game was how your videos would be reviewed / rated without the game telling you exactly what you did right or wrong.
I recently replayed this game and had so many thoughts about it and you put them into words so perfectly. And yes, I actually think the movie making tools are the weakest part of this game. I bought it primarily for machinima purposes but it was too restrictive and unintuitive for me. I found it a lot easier to make movies in The Sims 2. I wish they had designed it better. But still, the tycoon part of the game is great. It really deserves a sequel that would expand on all the things this game does well and also offer some quality of life improvements.
The only reason I knew this game existed before watching this video - true to your opening spiel, I've literally never heard it discussed until now even despite the pedigree of its developer - is because I somehow ended up with a random issue of _Game Informer_ as a kid and one of the articles was about it. But the reason I remember even that much is that even the bare-bones premise I was able to glean from that article, of a game where you're tasked with making movies free-form, struck me instantly and stuck with me steadfastly, through all the intervening decades. And now, learning that that movie-creation component is just the skeleton supporting a well fleshed-out business tycoon sim (that guides you through the history of film in miniature, no less), I have to agree with the other part of your opening spiel just as strongly as the first: This game absolutely deserves a rerelease, and I'd snap it right up if one day it actually happened. Consider that for a second! You took me from being merely enduringly curious about a game I heard about nearly two decades ago but was apparently never curious enough to actually look up myself during all that time, and brought me to the point where I'm craving an official way to play it - over the span of just twenty minutes, purely by describing it articulately and communicating in that description the passion you feel toward it. Even by your usual standards, this is a truly excellent video. Well done.
loved this game as a kid and am heartbroken that it won't run on my current PC. Wish this game had a scene builder. That would have prolonged it's life considerably more.
Omg, i saw a lets paly like 10 years ago. I couldt play the game back than. Thins than i thought about it but couldn't remamver the name of the game. I was so sad becouse the game has something realy great about it. You captured it realy gread in uour video. I found out about it, in an article about a new game called movies tycoon and i hope the can deliver on ther promises. I just got hit by so much nostalgia ... its wild
Excellent video! Detailed, entertaining, and personal. I loved this game too, even though I was awful at the business simulation aspect. There's a special place in my heart for Molyneux's humourous tycoon games.
Oh hey. Never thought I'd see someone covering this game. Been following behind the scenes ever since the Golden Sun review and it's kind of funny how I ended up going from that to actually seeing someone else play the game for the first time ever. Kind of wild. Remember this game being a bit overwhelming for kid me, but even back then, I was able to appreciate it's ambition even back then.
This game is amazing. I have actually been able to find a way to play it on my mac studio. I purchased the cd on amazon, then need to use the parralells app to trick the computer into thinking its a windows 11 computer... then you need to trick the windows 11 into thinking it's a windows 7 basically lol. It's actually pretty easy, there are videos on youtube about how this works if you are interested. Its basically just an adminstrative setting you need to run on the file properties when launching the application. Absolutely worth figuring out though... this is 1 of the best games of all time and tryly so sad that it died out and there hasn't been a reboot or new game like this. Making movies is so much fun, unlocking new sets and progressing through the timelines... I remember back in the day I made this awesome movie on the city rooftops with some robot and cop dude fighting it out to save the town. If you like to mess around with some creative tools... this game is a true gem for just having some good creative fun, along with some great management elements.
Any chance you'd record a video on how to set this up for non technical people? There are loads of people asking for this on game crack websites because the only other tutorial vid is for windows 10
I definitely need to binge your other videos sometime, amazing work. I remember seeing this game at a friend's house back in 2007-2009, looked amazing but never got to play it. Keep up the great content!
I loved this game so much. I still have the discs, but it doesn't run well on my current system. It would be awesome with a modern version, even if it can't be made by Lionhead. However I worry a modern version would be too censored.
I really liked this game! But when I got my newer computer the Movies wouldn't launch. The CD would install just fine, but it would not launch in Windows.
Count me as #5. I just started today. My ex had this game when it was new, but I had never played it myself. I watched him do it a few times, tho. It has a bit of a learning curve. I'm finding it difficult to find more people to hire and it was a bit weird figuring out how to move/destroy buildings. I only just started today, like literally a few hours ago, so I'm sure it'll get easier if I keep going.
The fact that new actors started with bad stats was a design flaw. When I played this, I really wanted to get new Actors but didn't want to put out bad movies.
It was the 'second half' of the game that was really awesome and, apparently, irreplaceable and uncopyable. It seems that nobody can make a modern version. 😭
It was a great management game ahead of it's time, it probably would have benefited more around 2010s as TH-cam had reached a point of popularity and the amount of content that could made to this day would have helped it get a sequel. I wonder with the Activision-blizzard deal with Microsoft could lead to a rerelease of the game, if not a potential sequel since Microsoft will have the full rights of the Movies with the deal. I probably shouldn't hold my breath on that, but It would be nice to see the game reemerge in some form.
Hello! Ever since July I have been looking for ways to play this game on my PC or VM. What OS or VM settings are you using to play it without crashing. On Windows 11 the game just crashes on Windows 11. What patches have you been using. I tried 4gb patch like with the Sims 2, I've tried to to make a Windows XP Virtual Machine, but it doesn't allow me to put enough VRAM. What have you done to make it work and what are your specs? Thank you!
I'm using Windows 10 but there is a patch for that on Nexus. Think that's what I'm using but I've also had the game installed onto an external hard drive for like 5 years and am not 100% sure what changes I made to get it running.
@@Freezer94 alright I'm back I bought a new PC that uses an Nvidia GPU and AMD ryzen CPU Maybe the patch will work this due to old games are annoying to run with my Intel i5 and Intel iris xe laptop. Hopefully this gaming PC can run this almost 20 year old game lmao MY QUEST TO PLAY THIS GAME COST ME 900 DOLLARS AM I INSANE I jest of course I bought the computer for more demanding games and editing but I really want to replay this game
@@cosmichappenings6674did you manage to run it eventually? I recently installed my copy and surprisingly it worked just fine, the only issue was the non-functional DRM which I had to bypass with a crack (the irony of me doing that to launch a legally obtained game...). But the game works perfectly fine. I only had to edit the registry to fix the resolution.
Loved this game since release. Just installed the game yesterday and having a blast. Only issue is that I also just bought a copy of stunts and effects and it didn’t come with the activation key to install it🥺

good memories mate!
I always thought it was "the sims but with movie themed elements", I feel like I cheated my younger self from something pretty unique.

It's not exactly a design flaw. It's just something you didn't like about the game.

I wish it had a full camera control. Like you can free view, it you’re always stuck on an axis when it comes times to shoot. Very sad

This game wont work on Windows 64
Great game
