the continuity and character dynamics are fantastic. The way Peter Sam can still keep Sir Handel in line is just fantastic (and the way they still call each other Stuart and Falcon, it gives so much more weight to the scene)! Brilliant writing and brilliant set up as usual! I await more episodes
Plus the reference to Duke, had I been able to shout properly it would've sounded different. I'd lost my voice just prior to this, nothing major but my throat had been sore.
the way sir handle was shooting off like a really, REALLY, angry rocket about the fact that they can't rescue Adeline makes me feel like they were like brother and sister to one another.

It’s almost surreal to me to finally have a part one of a new STMY sequence of episodes. Like the leaning in to the mystery that comes with being a civilian watching on as the government conducts business. This gives answers but also enough room for mystery, oh, and seeing Iron Bert from afar in action. Can’t wait for the next few to start leaning into the darker James Bond themes and ideas that sparked this volume.
Brilliant job WNW! I've recently gotten back into the world and I'm immediately invested and enthralled. I have a distinct memory when "Winds of Change" first came out and actually tearing up over it, and here I am 8 years later still amazed by your work. Bravo mate, bravo.
It's good to see you back with more content! I've been following your twitter as you've provided updates on production, and I'm glad to say that this exceeded my expectations. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of Adeline's story unfold
Let me guess: The saboteurs happened to be the IRA? There were around during that period. So much mystery in such a great opening for this thriller! Keep it up!
Very fine return to form; the hype over the last month in particular has been well deserved, and it's only Part 1! I like the overall structure of it; it is essentially the beginning of a multi-episode arc, but *is* a story in its own right with a solid beginning and ending given the history of Ivo's number. Well done anyways! Funny story, I watched this on my TV, not fussed that my housemate was also in the room. I had assumed she wasn't paying attention doing her own thing on her phone, but towards the end she turns to me and asked "So is she (Adeline) dead or what? 🤔" "You know as much as they do," was my reply 😶
Gotta love the return of WNW! It’s been far too long! I love how taboo death in general is to engines. They don’t die of natural causes, disease, their only ways out are violent or deliberate. It makes sense in universe and makes for some great storytelling
Was on the edge of my seat for all 20 minutes. Just as many questioned are answered, even more questioned are opened. We now know why Duncan thought the old iron bridge was "only" a legend, and the answer is surprisingly simple: he was on loan to the Talyllyn at the time. And we also now know why Rheneas and Sir Handel was so uncomfortable when he heard the story: he witnessed most of Adeline's "accident", of course he's spooked. But then, why doesn't Rusty or Peter Sam make the connection when they told the story to spook Duncan? And how did this story get out onto the radio for Rusty's driver to hear about in the first place? Who moved the trucks at Cros-ny-Cuirn? And WHY WAS DOUGLAS BLACK??? I guess the next few weeks will give us the answers. Also, the atmosphere and character building are astounding. The military's tendency to value secrecy over a sentient life is all too real, and it's so heartwarming to see that beneath Sir Handel's grumpy exterior, he's actually a very passionate and righteous personality. You never disappoint, WildNorWester, literally never. Can't wait for next Saturday!
Douglas being black was a call-back to STEY. The twins were in their TVS liveries in that until about the late 1970s. As for the rest, wait and see ;-)
As for Peter Sam and Rusty - they know from Sir Handel and Rheneas that there was an explosion. The ghost story from Duncan Gets Spooked doesn't have an explosion.
@@WildNorWester And you did mention the 'ghost story' came at least third hand, meaning some details probably got mixed up. The engine mentioned in the ghost story is male, but Adeline is clearly female.
One thing I forgot to comment on was that rendition of the ending theme of TUGS. Whoever did that fan version, props to them, and it really fits the tune of these more serious episodes.
It's done by AceofTrains, same person who I commissioned the opening theme from. Turns out the matching closing theme got picked up by TH-cam's copyright system, so I went with the TUGS closing theme instead. I think it does work better, as it's not that relentlessly upbeat.
This was a great start to this mini-series and it was very interesting finding out why Ivo Hugh reused Adeline's number, Fred's new voice actor did a great job voicing him, Adeline was an interesting character and I'm looking forward to next week's episode.

Sorry I was late seeing this as I was busy. But this is a good story by the way, looking forward to seeing the other ones that were released after this.
Wow! What a story to kick of this Mini-Series! You clearly took advantage in the odd arrangement of the numbers of Duke and Ivo Hugh. I also like how Ivo Hugh's voice is higher pitched than the rest to show his youth. I really like Adeline. A fuel-burning, female narrow-gauge 0-6-0. She is a rarity for narrow gauge characters. And the flashback to August of 1968 is documented perfectly, especially Adeline's "last day," breeds an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. The majority of the Skarloey Crew are left in the dark with no questions being answered which in turn affects us the audience. She disappeared like a phantom. It's baffling. How does a runaway train just disappear into the rain? And what about the alleged explosion? If she fell off the bridge, then why did she become a runaway in the first place? Such suspicion. I like how there was a flashback in a flashback and we learned that there was more to the accident between Sir Handel and George than we originally thought.
I've especially wanted to kindly mention that the Skarloey Railway is basically a narrow-gauge railway that'd been introduced during season 4 of the popular TV show that'd been based on the RWS books! In fact, it's completely obvious that the Skarloey Railway certainly had been based on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales since the engines on that railway were actually the real-life basis for each of 'em! In fact, starting from seasons 8-12 of the show when the models were still in use, Mr. Percival was the controller for the Skarloey Railway as well as when the show went full CGI animation when the narrow-gauge engines made a character comeback in the episode Don't Bother Victor as Peter Sam had been put in charge for the day while the Thin Controller ( Mr. Percival) went away to go have a meeting with Sir Topham Hatt possibly @ his own office! Also, apparently I'm personally seemingly to remember that was also the day of Victor's weekly maintenance visit! I've especially wanted to mention that I personally recall Mr. Percival telling Peter Sam NOT bother Victor with little things before his visit since it's obvious that Victor is a very busy narrow-gauge engine, but this certainly was a bit out of hand when Peter Sam tried to help in some way to repair each of his fellow members of the Skarloey Railway all by himself as it was making him run out of coal! Then, in the end, Peter Sam decided to bother Victor to come to help! Also, knowing from what I've especially read from my special 5 minutes stories book that story happens to be in apparently, Victor was curious to why Peter Sam didn't come to fetch him earlier UNTIL Peter Sam calmly explained about what Mr Percival said that morning about bothering him making Victor laugh saying that he doesn't mind SINCE it's completely obvious that it's basically his job to help repair his fellow railway locomotives when they're in trouble due to maintenance!
A fascinating episode to kick off a miniseries I've been looking forward to for a long time! Ivo Hugh being number 7 despite being built long after Duke was rescued always confused me too, and it looks like it's paved the way for a very interesting story. Can't wait to see where this goes next!
Why do I get the sudden feeling..., that there is going to be more than just what was witnessed within 1968, leading up to possibly another series of strange events?
Gotta say, it’s unsympathetic for Peter Sam to tell Sir Handel to act with some decorum when they’ve all just been told one of their own crashed into a gorge and can’t be rescued.
