If I love God more than my own family, why would I stay here and help them in their senior years when I should be on a missionary quest? Is that correct? Let them fend for themselves while I only spread the word of religion which has caused wars and death

You completely don't understand what he was saying. He's not saying not yo love your family, of care for them or get a job. It's relative, we should put Christ at the center of our lives, and still live our lives, just not focus on the things of the world. If you love the world and the things of the world and put them ahead of Christ you're not worthy to be a disciple. Get it now???
