I can't help but think what Arthur Schopenhauer said about this issue, namely that there is hardly any good reason to put so much value on other's opinions about ourselves in view that they cannot possibly be essential to our own happiness. He refers to this inclination as a very peculiar weakness of human nature. IMO one should not totally disregard what other people think about oneself but carefully limit this consideration by recognizing and determining at what point it starts to become absurd and pointless.
