I'd imagine the "conflict" lies somewhere between being herself and being what's expected of her as a nurse. I have no words for de Kooning, though. His pieces tripped me up, lol. There’s a lot to take in. It’s a kind of scares me. Like I expect a jump scare. I own a Haring and a Lichtenstein, and as soon as I saw it I thought it was pop art from the 1980s. It channels that era. Love it.
I feel it has a kinship with Situationist détournement; I get the impression of a Punk/post-punk sensibility (Jamie Reed). The hot pink, defacement, subversion of 1950s/60s stereotypes; questions around identity, and gender power relations. Perhaps it's the hint of Noir that, for me, brought to mind Mildred Pierce by Sonic Youth.
