LUAMBO MAKIADI AND THE OK JAZZ On June 6, 1956, Leopoldville (capital of the Belgian Congo) now Kinshasa and its suburban neighborhoods, woke up to the announcement of a news that an orchestra has just been born. This orchestra proposed to create a new style of modern music surfing on the lyricism of the THEMES of lOVE, SATIRE, SQUEAKY HUMOR, PAMPHLET, DERISION .. . It was a question of drawing from the roots of the popular life to take the essential sap allowing to paint a picture without concession of the Congolese society. Nothing, no one, was spared by the critical eye of the composers. The stated objective of the new orchestra was to impose on the Congolese music scene, and why not African. At the initiative of this project, a young guitarist aged 18 years old François Luambo Makiadi was still little known to the general public: . Luambo Makiadi was born on 6th July 1938 in Sonobata, an agglomeration located about fifty kilometers from Leopoldville (Kinshasa), on the railway and on the road connecting the colonial capital to Matadi in Bas-Congo. Little Francis did not have a particular childhood. His childhood was like that of thousands of young Congolese who were born to break the "pebble", to survive in a colonial urban society where the strongest devour the weakest. . In this fight for survival, Luambo Makiadi Franço started with the misfortune of losing his father Mr Joseph Emongo at a very early age of ten. This forced him to drop out of school while in grade three (Class 3). In that case the young Makiadi, his siblings and his mother Hélène Mbonga Makiesse, faced the harsh realities of life. The young Makiadi decided to face difficulties with playing a harmonica that eventually made him manage in life thanks to the impromptu musical lessons offered by one of his comrades. He later left this solo instrument to learn how to play the guitar. Biography of African All Stars. Influential but short-lived Congolese rumba band, formed 1978; disbanded 1979. Théo Blaise Kounkou (born Brazzaville, 1949; vocal), Lokassa ya Mbongo(born Kinshasa, 1946; guitar), Dizzy Mandjeku (born Kinshasa, Aug. 20, 1946; guitar), Sam Mangwana(born Kinshasa, Feb. 21, 1945; vocal), Ringo Moya (born Kinshasa, 1953; died Paris, Apr. 1993; drums), Roland M'vogo (born Cameroon, bass). Band formed in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where a number of Congo-Kinshasa (Zaire) musicians, disillusioned with economic and political conditions at home, had gone to seek a fresh start. Mangwana, Lokassa, Mandjeku and Moya, four veterans of Tabu Ley's band, Afrisa, joined with Congo-Brazzaville's Kounkou and Cameroonian M'vogo to launch their new band. The All Stars felt Congolese dominance of African pop music to be under threat from pressing plants at home, idled by lack of raw materials and spare parts, and from a certain absence of artistic innovation. It was the time of "Sweet Mother" from Nigeria's Prince Nico Mbarga, who fashioned a mixture of West African highlife and Congolese-style guitars into a world-wide hit. To counter Mbarga's challenge, the All Stars speeded up the rumba (Congolese music's base) and de-emphasized conventional Lingala lyrics in favor of more widely understood French and English. With help from a Nigerian producer, the players traveled to Lagos in the middle of 1978 where, in little more than twenty-four hours, they recorded enough material for three albums:Sam Mangwana et l'African All Stars,Les Champions, andZeneba. Most of the songs incorporated the speeded-up "new beat," but a laid-back rumba called "Georgette Eckins" produced the session's runaway hit. The All Stars played concerts along the West African coast and, while in Ghana in early 1979, recorded four albums of new material:Est-ce Que Tu Moyens?,M'banda Kazaka,Mamadou, andSuzana Coulibaly. A faster, "new beat" song, "Suzana Coulibaly," produced the biggest hit of these sessions. Also in 1979, the group moved its headquarters from Abidjan to Lomé, Togo, where it was joined by three additional guitarists from Kinshasa: Pablo Lubadika, Bopol Mansiamina, and Syran M'Benza. By then, however, dissension had begun to mount. After recording a final album,Matinda, in Lagos, the African All Stars broke up, ending a brief but extraordinarily creative year of existence. A reunion of Lokassa, Mandjeku, Mangwana, and Moya in 1982 produced three new albums-Affaire Video,N'simba Eli, andBonne Année-under the African All Stars name, but all lacked the fire and spontaneity of the group's original work. ODONGO Franco and his OKJ, in 1982 released a song titled "Odongo (coopération) The song begins by an expertly done rhythm guitar played by none other than Ya Makosso Kindudi and features Franco's extra ordinary solo. The song is actually not about any Odongo, but Franco and Mangwana's working relationship in relation to what the Kinshasan gossip had for them The name Odongo is merely mentioned and nothing is said about him in the song, thus it is impossible to tell, from the song, who he was Those well versed with Congolese rumba, know too well that at times someone is recognized by a song, but the storyline always has nothing to do with the person There are very many such examples, Alita Tshamalla by Josky, Akamba by Viva Makale etc etc I had sought to unmask who this mysterious Odongo was, by asking in the biggest forum for Franco fans, Friends of TPOK Jazz and these are some of the theories that came up I came to the conclusion that if you want to hear all forms of rumours, just ask who odongo was 1.Odongo was an immigration official who facilitated Franco's travel into Kenya in back then 2. Odongo was Franco's friend from Migori. I was introduced to this Odongo and I had an opportunity to talk to him 3. Odongo is a Lingala word for thank you 4. Odongo, a former Khwisero MP was recognized by Franco in the song, for unknown reasons among many more theories All these turned out to be inaccurate Franco in the 70s and 80s had grown to become a music titan recognized, respected, and adored. When he visited Tanzania in 1972, on Nyerere's invitation, he rode on the president's official limousine, bearing the coat of arms He was accorded diplomatic status. It is highly unlikely that Franco would enlist the services of some junior immigration official to facilitate his clearance into any country Secondly, for a fact, this song was composed by Sam Mangwana and not Franco and if the said Odongo was someone's friend, then he had to be a Mangwana's friend and not Franco because the former was the composer of the song The Odongo of Migori was even more bizarre.When I called him, he claimed to have known Franco when they met in Kinshasa in 1983. This song was done in 1982 When I was done with rumours, I made an attempt to reach Mangwana who by then was in Luanda Angola (not Bunyore). By then Dizzy was visiting him and when I requested that he inquire for me, he told me the Odongo sang in the song was Mangwana's friend from Abidjan who worked for the West African nation's airline Dizzy together with Mangwana, have been members of at least four bands, together. They were together in Festival Des Maquisards, Afrisa International,Africal All Stars in West Africa, and OKJ of Franco It is also worth noting that by the time this particular song was recorded, Mangwana had already left OKJ and wasn't a member of the band He only appeared as a guest artist, doing a colabo with Franco. The cooperation was that Mangwana was not fully integrated in OK JAZZ after leaving Afrisa. Franco wanted him to be in OK JAZZ and there only. Mangwana then asked Franco for this song. Mangwana was pivotal for Franco for his good, stardom performance in for example in "Toyeba yo" = SIDI.

Biography of African All Stars. Influential but short-lived Congolese rumba band, formed 1978; disbanded 1979. Théo Blaise Kounkou (born Brazzaville, 1949; vocal), Lokassa ya Mbongo(born Kinshasa, 1946; guitar), Dizzy Mandjeku (born Kinshasa, Aug. 20, 1946; guitar), Sam Mangwana(born Kinshasa, Feb. 21, 1945; vocal), Ringo Moya (born Kinshasa, 1953; died Paris, Apr. 1993; drums), Roland M'vogo (born Cameroon, bass).
Band formed in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where a number of Congo-Kinshasa (Zaire) musicians, disillusioned with economic and political conditions at home, had gone to seek a fresh start. Mangwana, Lokassa, Mandjeku and Moya, four veterans of Tabu Ley's band, Afrisa, joined with Congo-Brazzaville's Kounkou and Cameroonian M'vogo to launch their new band.
The All Stars felt Congolese dominance of African pop music to be under threat from pressing plants at home, idled by lack of raw materials and spare parts, and from a certain absence of artistic innovation. It was the time of "Sweet Mother" from Nigeria's Prince Nico Mbarga, who fashioned a mixture of West African highlife and Congolese-style guitars into a world-wide hit. To counter Mbarga's challenge, the All Stars speeded up the rumba (Congolese music's base) and de-emphasized conventional Lingala lyrics in favor of more widely understood French and English.
With help from a Nigerian producer, the players traveled to Lagos in the middle of 1978 where, in little more than twenty-four hours, they recorded enough material for three albums:Sam Mangwana et l'African All Stars,Les Champions, andZeneba. Most of the songs incorporated the speeded-up "new beat," but a laid-back rumba called "Georgette Eckins" produced the session's runaway hit. The All Stars played concerts along the West African coast and, while in Ghana in early 1979, recorded four albums of new material:Est-ce Que Tu Moyens?,M'banda Kazaka,Mamadou, andSuzana Coulibaly. A faster, "new beat" song, "Suzana Coulibaly," produced the biggest hit of these sessions.
Also in 1979, the group moved its headquarters from Abidjan to Lomé, Togo, where it was joined by three additional guitarists from Kinshasa: Pablo Lubadika, Bopol Mansiamina, and Syran M'Benza. By then, however, dissension had begun to mount. After recording a final album,Matinda, in Lagos, the African All Stars broke up, ending a brief but extraordinarily creative year of existence. A reunion of Lokassa, Mandjeku, Mangwana, and Moya in 1982 produced three new albums-Affaire Video,N'simba Eli, andBonne Année-under the African All Stars name, but all lacked the fire and spontaneity of the group's original work.
Despite its brief existence, the African All Stars proved to be tremendously influential. They demonstrated to other musicians that there could be artistic life outside of Kinshasa and Brazzaville. Most of the players-Bopol, Lokassa, Théo Blaise, Syran, Ringo Moya, Pablo, and Mangwana-went on to form the backbone of the evolving Paris base of Congolese music production. And the group's speeded-up "new beat" helped inspire the fast-paced Paris sound that came to be known as soukous.

Franco and his OKJ, in 1982 released a song titled "Odongo (coopération)
The song begins by an expertly done rhythm guitar played by none other than Ya Makosso Kindudi and features Franco's extra ordinary solo. The others in the song are Mpudi on bass, Mangwana shares the lead vocals with Franco as Josky and Lola sing the backup vocals
The usual guys Kasongo, Pedro and Lunama are on sax and the drummer could be Seskain Molenga
The million dollar question remains who is or what is Odongo?
For beginners, Luos of Nyanza in Kenya, the only people to add Franco a name, when they baptized him Otoyo, and they are the people who brought down a stadium wall which stood between them and seeing Franco live, name one of the male twins born among them Odongo, as the other one is named Opiyo
This means every Luo Odongo you meet most likely has a twin brother called Opiyo
Franco fans are on record of trying to own the band's lady vocalist Akumu Wakudu also called Nana Akumu
A native Alur from DRC border with Uganda, Kenyans have for long tried to associate her Nyanza, probably because if her name. I am informed the Alur are cousins of the Luo
But Nana doesn't understand a word in dholuo, from a coversation I had with her. It is possible she doesn't speak her dialect
So who was Odongo?
The song is actually not about any Odongo, but Franco and Mangwana's working relationship in relation to what the Kinshasan gossip had for them
The name Odongo is merely mentioned and nothing is said about him in the song, thus it is impossible to tell, from the song, who he was
Those well versed with Congolese rumba, know too well that at times someone is recognized by a song, but the storyline always has nothing to do with the person
There are very many such examples, Alita Tshamalla by Josky, Akamba by Viva Makale etc etc
I had sought to unmask who this mysterious Odongo was, by asking in the biggest forum for Franco fans, Friends of TPOK Jazz and these are some of the theories that came up
I came to the conclusion that if you want to hear all forms of rumours, just ask who odongo was
1.Odongo was an immigration official who facilitated Franco's travel into Kenya in back then
2. Odongo was Franco's friend from Migori. I was introduced to this Odongo and I had an opportunity to talk to him
3. Odongo is a Lingala word for thank you
4. Odongo, a former Khwisero MP was recognized by Franco in the song, for unknown reasons among many more theories
All these turned out to be inaccurate
Franco in the 70s and 80s had grown to become a music titan recognized, respected, and adored. When he visited Tanzania in 1972, on Nyerere's invitation, he rode on the president's official limousine, bearing the coat of arms
He was accorded diplomatic status. It is highly unlikely that Franco would enlist the services of some junior immigration official to facilitate his clearance into any country
Secondly, for a fact, this song was composed by Sam Mangwana and not Franco and if the said Odongo was someone's friend, then he had to be a Mangwana's friend and not Franco because the former was the composer of the song
The Odongo of Migori was even more bizarre.When I called him, he claimed to have known Franco when they met in Kinshasa in 1983. This song was done in 1982
When I was done with rumours, I made an attempt to reach Mangwana who by then was in Luanda Angola (not Bunyore). By then Dizzy was visiting him and when I requested that he inquire for me, he told me the Odongo sang in the song was Mangwana's friend from Abidjan who worked for the West African nation's airline
Dizzy together with Mangwana, have been members of at least four bands, together. They were together in Festival Des Maquisards, Afrisa International,Africal All Stars in West Africa, and OKJ of Franco
It is also worth noting that by the time this particular song was recorded, Mangwana had already left OKJ and wasn't a member of the band
He only appeared as a guest artist, doing a colabo with Franco. This is the same arrangement he had with Tabuley, in the mid 70s, when he recorded minha Angola, mose konzo, etc
Mangwana, born in Kinshasa of a Zimbabwean father and an Angolan mother, has been working on a documentary that hopefully will highlight his musical journey in details

The cooperation was that Mangwana was not fully integrated in OK JAZZ after leaving Afrisa. Franco wanted him to be in OK JAZZ and there only. Mangwana then asked Franco for this song. Mangwana was pivotal for Franco for his good, stardom performance in for example in "Toyeba yo" = SIDI.
