Hi, I think the issue is not that a dvi adapter does not work but that, over time, it causes the dvi board in the Ftdx10 to fail.

The problem I have seen involves converting it to HDMI, apparently it causes problems with the video out over time and it will ultimately fail.

yes you damage the dvi card in your radio and then it must be sent to factories for repair there is a safety circuit that gets damaged the hdmi has too much power back to the dvi card

That depends if your HDMI port puts out voltage or not. If it does it may.

There are 2 types of DVI-D cables. One is the DVI-D single Link and the other is a DVI-D double link. I paused the video where you showed the end of the DVI-D plug and it looks like you are using the single link version 18+1 pins. No pins in the middle. Can you confirm this?

So, as the DVI to HDMI is just different connector straight trough, is the backdrive protection not good enough or are there other unexpected problems? The chip used is EP952: a Low Power HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) transmitter. The chip is compliant with HDMI Rev 1.4 and HDCP Rev 1.4 specifications, downward compatible with DVI 1.0.
Basic requirements for an HDMI source are:
    • Output voltage: 4.8 Vmin, 5.3 Vmax
    • Short Circuit Current: no more than 0.5 A
    • Shorting two HDMI Sources together shall not result in any damage
No damage to the HDMI source or sink can result from the shorting of any combination of signals on
any connector. If two HDMI sources are connected together with a single cable, no damage can occur
to either of the sources. If two HDMI sinks are connected together with a single cable, no damage can
occur to either of the sinks.
5V seems is fused (F1801, 0.63A) and diode (D1800) protected for reverse voltage. Seems ok, maybe the monitor PSU/Ftdx10 PSU potential difference is the source of problems?

It is critically important NOT to use ANY adapter from DVI-D to any other type. The DVI-D board in the rig WILL fail eventually. if you wish to use an external monitor, follow the manual which states that it is a DVI-D monitor connection. I agree it is short-sighted and even incompetent not to issue a warning to anyone...but there are MANY accounts of folks having to send in the rig to repair the DVI-D board...and the wait can be long! Forewarned is forearmed. I have ordered a DVI-D monitor for the purpose...even though I have MANY other types lying around that I could use. They still make monitors with DVI-D, and I got mine refurbished for a little over $100.00.

What did you find for a monitor? I'm a new FTDX-10 owner and am looking for one. What size screen does 800x600 fill the screen with a quality picture. Do these monitors all go down to 800x600?

why making a video on something you don't have a clue about????
Yaesu DVI implementation on these radio (FTDX10 &101) is faulty. Many users had the radio DVI output gone.
Depending upon with cable/adapter you are using (there are active and passive ones), the current, even if it is largely within the DVI standard, will damage the radio.
It could go from blowing the SMD fuse all the way to frying the video chip.
So it is a pure matter of luck. If you use a DVI-D to HDMI cable/adapter it can work forever, work for a while -few days, few months- or immediately damage the radio.
Again, it's not about monitors or cables, which works flawlessly with millions and millions of other devices. It is about Yaesu making a mistake in designing the video output on these radio. Not supplying enough current to the DVI output.
They will not admit it, since they would have to replace the main board on all sold radios. Instead their employees, including the sales manager, UNOFICALLY vehiculate the message that you need to select cables/adapters which draw only a given amount of current. Which is ridiculous.
For Yaesu customers are good up to the point they acquire the radio.

Yaesu will NEVER admit there is a PROBLEM with the video-output !
REMEMBER the infamous ZEBRA-DISPLAY problem on the Yaesu FT-857 non D and D ???
They had a BIG PROBLEM with a chip on the ribbon cable leading to DISPLAY.
Til the end of production 2 years ago, only the last 2 or 3 produced batch had a NEW CHIP on the display ribbon !

Their problem is when using a DVI to HDMI adapter which is what everyone wants to use. For your clarification, what the video says is that DVI to DVI has no problems and with the DVI to VGA adapter it works too and I've been using it for 5 months and I haven't had a problem, your solution is to use DVI to DVI.

@@rodekp4channel which does not mean that DVI to HDMI should give any problem.
It does so only because of a major flaw in the DVI of the radio.
