@@mfournier01got my Alesis kit with the correct sounds for this song. I don’t quite have enough inputs for all the correct parts, but really close. Thanks again
I have listened to this song over 20000 times over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
@@mfournier01 I have been to 26 plus concerts, once three nights in a row, drove 400 miles to get there, three days ending on new years eve concert. Met him four times, once on a rainy day on Sunset Blvd, with my hawkeyes, as he was getting out of his car, going to Sam Ash to buy a harmonica. I literally reversed the car on Sunset blvd in the rain to park backwards on the side street to not miss him Ran inside and literally said "Huey, what are you doing here?" he was so surprised my eyes caught him in that one fleeting moment, in middle of a rainy day. I had just finished lunch in the car from Rock'n'Rolla Ralphs and had I been five seconds sooner or later in the universe, I'd missed him. I have his music playing over and over again, but this one is just endless. It's the same reason that I can't get enough of Heart of Glass. For years, they both just resonate with my frequency. It turns out, and I knew this, that Mike Chapman produced both singles, and there is a Mike Chapman's fingerprints and dna in both of these songs. I am no musician, but if there was an analysis of these two songs, side by side, I am sure they have the same harmonic signature/dna. No other two songs sound and resonate the same to me, and H&S is just an endless resonant music, that is insatiable to my person. I think if there were a bunch of white musicians playing the black blues rock music, it'd be HLN, to my untrained ears.
Years late to this party but I have to add that this is just solid musicianship and good taste. Just playing it basically just how it's written. Probably one of if not THE strongest Huey Lewis tunes, just a great mid-tempo early 80s rocker well-executed.
Never too late to loin the YT party Z! I do love the Huey Lewis of the 80’s and this song is just so fun to play along with while trying to keep the percussion going too! Thanks for coming along for the ride. Happy New Year to you!
Dude, this is cray-cray! I never realized there was so much percussion going on in this song, and you dropped it all in in one take flawlessly. I'm kinda in awe by it, truthfully. That was really fun to watch! Kudos, man!
***** Love playing to Huey! Not really sure why but it's just fun music to rock to. The drums are straight forward but Oh so perfect for the music. You can't ad lib or you ruin it! I think I'll bang out another one soon
This percussion is absolutely phenomenal, you just don't appreciate how much is going on until you see this. Huey Lewis and the news would be proud of this. Thank you for sharing this and your talent. 😊😊😊😊
@mfournier01 I'm so glad you did,it's one of my favourite all time tunes and now i can appreciate it even more watching you. If i wore a hat i would take it off to you, that might sound a bit cheesy but i admire people like yourself with raw talent that doesn't come easy. No you didn't...ah yes you did! You just covered one of my all time fave rock/pop bands around!!! Awesome band, awesome song & awesome playing. Love how you managed to integrate the percussion in there as well. V-drums are so versatile with their sounds! Loved it Mike!!!
TDRolandTD It's funny how many of us 80's rockers respect Huey Lewis. He's one of those iconic singers (Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Peter Gabriel, etc.) that never gets old. Thanks for checking it out Paul. Hey, have you heard from Jay lately?
Mike -- Oh my god! What you have done here is stunning. I know you have to feed your family, but it's a shame that you aren't showcasing your talent on stage. Frequently. I see that this posting is around four years old as I type this. You are probably full-time by now.
Yeah I always grew up trying to play all the drum and percussion parts of my favorite music. This one was a bit of a challenge but fun at the same time. I have played in a few cover bands but no time for it anymore so I just play and record in my studio! Thanks for the killer comments
@@mfournier01 I see, I wonder why I kept hearing cowbells all of these years. tnx. Love to see you do a cover of Whole Lotta Love'n and the long Small World, both the first and second part, Old Antone's and Bobo Tempo, all from Small World album. I thing Gibson is such a renaissance drummer, who is so under the radar and yet he can keep up and be on par with any legend in the drumming world, dead or alive. I could be wrong, not being a drummer.
Jenna Carr I'm quite sure they were all acoustic as Bill Gibson didn't play electronics that I know of. Not to mention the technology was far worse in the 80's
Well done! Have you dubbed out the drums/percussion from the original to hear your version? The top drum on your right in this cover from your set is a rat-tat right?...hearing it sounds so cool! When listening to this song (which by the way is my favourite HL song) I envisioned a cow bell per say in the mix to give that distinct sound but I don't see one on your set. I'm old school I guess LOL. The sound created by these E sets is mind blowing! Great skills Mike! Keep it up!
+Ray Someone Thanks Ray! I actually have a number of percussion instruments triggered on this song. Top left pad has triangle in the middle and timbale on the edge. Third rack tom has a salsa cowbell on the rim, and pad to my left has a hand clap in the middle and a deeper cowbell on the edge. Challenging to put it all together but fun to play at the same time!
I have to ask - by you being that damn good - do you perform in a group -because if I were looking for a drummer hands down - you'd definitely be my choice no joke. How long you been playing drums if you don't mind me asking???
Thanks for the kind words Arthur. I have played in many bands over the last 35 years! I only recently decided to stop playing out and just have fun recording in my studio and sharing it with the world. I still like to “sit in” when I can but the days of touring are behind me.
Great cover! I love all the dynamics you used to fill the space in the song. Just subbed! I've got some drum covers on my channel (one is a Huey Lewis & The News song), I hope you check them out!
That is super kick ass, I shared it. I think my band wants to do this but I'll have to pull my rack tom, set up a few salsa bells up above my snare and maybe a small snare to my left as a timbale.
Wizzle I used to move stuff around on my acoustic kit a lot. Electronics make it much easier to assign the sounds to existing drums/pads. Have fun with it!
All these years later, this still rocks. Listened to this like 5 times today already lol! I appreciate it, and you absolutely smashed this one.
Thanks so much. I had a good time playing both parts at the same time! It’s a good challenge and one that can only be done with the e-kit

This sound would be rather dull without the fills. So much swing and extra voice to it. You nailed it too. Great job.
Thanks man. Yeah the percussion adds a whole other element to the groove that once you realize it’s there, you can never un hear it right?
The original version by Excile was dull

0:08, I always thought it was cowbells that Gibson was tapping, and not the rim of a drum!
Oh it’s original percussion alright. I’ve just made it easier to play by programming it to the rim of my electronic drum!
