awesome stuff my man. i just left carriacou last week its still a mess at least we got some power food water and people are in good spirits but with alot of people with zero dollars to there name even with 10% off it doesn't do much. alot of people do need that help and someone to talk to. Shout out to you and the Guyanese troops for there dedication and hard work shout out to the island of Trinidad. For being under the UK for all these years and all the British artwork i would like to see them replaced cause such a rich country who lived of slave labor they have done absolutely nothing. again respect to you and the crew you guys deserve every award possible.

I moved to South Florida in September '92, right after Hurricane Andrew, and I've had a sick, twisted infatuation for hurricanes. I'm thankful that in the US Virgin Islands the government changed the building code after Hurricane Hugo in 89. You cannot use nails on your roof. It has to be screws and it has to be but so much inches apart. My house was been through cat 1,3 and 5 since being built and I have had no leaks or ruffing issues during those storms including non one in my neighbor. These other Islands need to change and enforce building codes. Hurricane will not go away.

I'm so grateful to you both for all that you did in the first couple days, I had left Carriacou 2 weeks prior after looking after my sick grandmother to leave her behind in all what i saw coming was gut wrenching, but your videos & communication helped tremedously.
To see people i know you were communicating with in your videos also to see the extent of damage that was caused as much as it was heart breaking it prepared me for what was to come. I went back a week after although it took 5 days before i knew my grandmother was ok but we lost our home, it's been agonising seeing my people displaced but they have life. They have a long way to go physcially & mentally but they will rise again.

When I was a kid we lived at the southern tip of Taiwan in early 80s. We had several typhoons come through, including one eye go right over us. That experience of going from full destruction to calm and blue skies and then back to chaos (in the OTHER direction!) is something I still remember quite well.
And the sounds. We were in solid concrete apartments with rolldown metal storm shutters over the windows and doors. So loud.

@@JonathanPetramala Its decompressing and coping with a traumatic experience, when you able to rewatch things at some point without having these feelings you know you have overcome the overwhelming impact. I noticed this , when I was watching a very emotionally draining Tornado Live Chase , seeing the violent Tornado in Matador ,Tx went through the Town and knowing I cant do anything. Took me around 2 Weeks, to get over these emotions. Half a Year later , there was no bad emotion left I was able to watch it rational. In the Past its was even more overwhelming ,dealing with Days like Canton,tx or Dallas ,Rowlett seen both live on streams. Both Days came so unexpectedly I was not prepared for it. Over the Years I got used to seeing bad Tornados happen, I learned to deal with this differently. But these are events in the Chaser World, we all have to deal with and its hard to Cope with. The lost of Chaser Friends by Accidents , Leaving this World or being affected as person who cares for a affected person. Today I know about this mental effects on us and what it makes with me sometimes. But most of the Time I have learned to shut myself off from it to stay rational. But Carriacou was affecting me a bit too. Your Dramatic Experiences was nothing short of overwhelming , took me also some Days to Cope with. But I was sitting at home , I could get myself out of the Situation by turning of Social Media.
Having some Nightmares and Flashback and emotional reactions or a few Days to Weeks is normal, it a Problem when its not going away. Its great you and Brandon are great Buds nobody could deal with this alone
Stormchasing teached me dealing differently with my fears, some are legit and it ok having them. Other fears are just build up somewhere from people who told me all the time I cant do certain things and my World would fall apart. But I have become more brave over the Years. And the feeling overcome a fear and fining out it was never this bad or not even worth the worry is unbelievable. I have no longer fear a of Thunderstorms I freaking love them, but I will always have a dam respect of Lightning. I had a too close to comfort encounter over my head from a CC. And getting chased by a Thunderstorm to the Car was enough Adrenaline for Days. Since this Day I'm a bit more worried of Lightning in hearing range

The problem here is that those roofs are made of (thine) metal plates that hardly have any weight. A roof often acts like a wing of an airplane. It gushes over it, creates a lower air pressure on the back and the actual higher pressure in the house is pushing of the roof. If you live in hurricane area's you really make a roof more sturdier than this. I am in the build process of a mancave in my backyard, and I use concrete roof tiles. Not only are these tiles 4kg each, they also interlock with each other. The total weight on this build (measuring 3 by 9 meters) is 1.6 (metric) tons (1,600kg) of roof tiles only. Aside from that I also anchored in a checkers pattern the roof tiles to the battens below it with special storm anchors. The top tiles are all screwed in tight, even if they are overlapping each other. Ventilation is also key; so I left strategically a few openings here and there so air pressure can always equalize. I believe this structure could copy with hurricane force winds. But luckily they don't happen that often were I live, but since this will be my mancave with all my hobby related stuff, I rather overdo it and not need it than be cheap and eventually need it, but don't have it.

    • @JonathanPetramala

Absolutely. We think it helped to speed up emergency response by days or even a week because the world was able to see exactly what had happened within hours of landfall and the hurricane leaving. Without Starlink it would have taken over a day before the Grenada government actually made it to the island and longer for video to be released. It’s a game changer.

It depends. Run from the surge, hide from the wind. I've been through many hurricanes. Our oceanfront home was built to handle a Cat 4 without damage, and we got to test it many times, and it performed beautifully. Unfortunately 2 years ago we had a Cat 5 storm surge. 20'. The building kept us safe and comfortable, but the mechanicals/infrastructure got damaged. Even though we were on the beach, we actually had a smoother time than many people inland due to the building's strong construction. If it weren't for the water pumps, electrical, and generator getting wiped out, inside it was still like nothing had happened.
For most people (in an area which is used to getting hurricanes):
Cat 1/2 are no big deal. Expect to lose power for 1-7 days. This is where the legendary Florida hurricane parties originate from. Unless you're in a trailer, you're fine.
Cat 3 is when things start to get serious. If you're in a weaker building, probably not a bad idea to get out of the way.
Cat 4 is when things start to get scary. Strong buildings away from ANY water will do the trick, although best for many to head out of town for a week.
Cat 5... take lots of photos, pack up everything you value and take it with you... lock the door...the insurance company now owns your home.

Both of you have ice water in your veins. Calm, cool, collected. Getting out during the eye and telling people it's only halfway over. Connecting to the local government and to the world with starlink, helping people reach loved ones to tell them they're okay, helping to get expedited relief. It's all just unreal.
I'm not a religious person but you said that you two picked this storm a couple days out before it was really anything. You picked a spot knowing the roof was an issue, when the roof went you were calm and nothing serious happened. You two and honestly, many of those people were blessed.

Fun fact I've visited Grenada (from Canada) in 1968 when I was 7 years old. I remember the black sand beach and going sailing on a sailboat and I lost my hat and the villa we stayed at had a green parrot that would visit every morning and we fed him peanuts. It's sad to see such destruction on such a beautiful island. I hope they can rebuild quickly but it will take years I'm sure to get it returned to the way it was before.

Glad to see you guys are ok man, spectacular footage my friend....just awesome....not many people can say they were in the eye of the storm....I have been through many hurricanes on my island St. Kitts up North but most were pretty weak, only Gat 5 hurricane Georges in 1998 as I can remember as a young boy the eye passed directly over St. Kitts and Nevis and did a lot of damage. 2017's monster Hurricane Irma with winds which peaked at 180 mph (285 km/h) had a direct projected path over St. Kitts and Nevis....people were scared....I remember meteorologist said on TV may the lord be with us....I long with my family put sand bags on my roof....luckily for us at the last moment the storm shifted a bit with the eye passing directly over St. Maarten....as you know it was total destruction over there....the the damage we got was nothing compared to over there...with the eye passing just 60 miles north of St. Kitts. i sub and i will be watching more of your videos, I am a aviation spotter from St. Kitts and Nevis...take care guys :) !!!

I am honestly flabbergasted by how lax their building codes are. I live in Florida and there is no way that even remotely passes for acceptable - even decades ago. As you guys knew, it was totally obvious that it was not going to be sufficient. You would figure that islands such as this would have beefed up these buildings long ago. I get that cost is a concern, however. Hopefully, this will force the badly needed changes.

Having the eye on Wilma was so strange because you know the worst part is still coming and it was nonstop assault for hours just before this. You know it’s coming again but bright sun!
Living in the direct path of Irma and having experienced tons of hurricanes I was relatively prepared I thought. Until Ian. I was living in Lee and on Saturday and Sunday I was watching 24 hour coverage of the radar and storm coverage but they had the storm going to Tampa. I saw this damn storm jog straight north over Cuba when it was supposed to be going ENE according to radar. Live storm vlogger said it needed to be consistent change so I went to bed at 2am on Monday morning and woke up at 7am for work. All of Monday, track doesn’t change, company I worked for cancelled storm prep meetings because we weren’t in the cone (we were a mile on the outer edge but with the jog north it had to shift the track and it was going to impact us I knew it). Monday night I go to sleep, Tuesday I get to work at 8am, one coworker is gone, other coworker is leaving the office, half of the staff is missing….track had shifted with us in the DIRECT path. I said I needed to leave but because the position I was in and the other person leaving and third being out, they couldn’t stay open if I wasn’t there. Had a meeting with the company who said all offices staying open until Tuesday at 5pm, no one had time to prep, all Walmarts were closed, Publix closing at 6pm and I didn’t have a cooler not that it mattered cuz they sold out in hours. 10 min after they get off the phone call, my zone for my house had mandatory evacuation and the place I worked was mandatory evacuation. I left at 1:00 and was supposed to evacuate by the next morning when the storm was expected to start. By the time I got out of work, everything was gone, batteries, coolers, ice, gas, etc. there was no way I was evacuating. Less than an hour after the real storm started, I lost power and then found out that all 12 of my alarm clocks either didn’t have radios, or the battery power didn’t work. We were in the direct path of the eye so I kept waiting for the break so I could breath, break never came, we were in the EYE WALL but the eye was about 5 miles north of us so it was at least 10 hours of a freight train.
Only saving grace is I lived in a BRAND NEW building less than 3 years old, fourth floor, no damage at all but it was rough.
My family lived on the other coast and they had school and work cancelled Tuesday Wednesday Thursday. They had a lot of rain but nothing unusual for Florida weather. Meanwhile my job told me to come back Thursday. Didn’t turn out that way cuz the entire street was under feet of water and the storm surge had swept away everything around the workplace including the electrical grid.
That’s when I learned that it REALLY DOES MATTER what county you live in in Florida because the response in broward was TOTALLY DIFFERENT and that’s what I expected. Needless to say I don’t live in Lee county anymore.

    • @JonathanPetramala
      @JonathanPetramala  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

I always say, if you can leave you should, but it’s just not that simple with all the changes in track, ect…

We were living in St. Maarten and other islands throughout the 80’s and 90’s and experienced Luis in 1995, a very strong cat 4 with cat 5 gusts, where 3 people died officially but 800 unofficially (we saw with our own eyes helicopter after helicopter carrying body bags out to refrigerated Dutch freighters and ships) thereafter Marilyn, Bertha and “wrong way” Lenny in 1999. Lenny’s eye meandered slowly over Anguilla, St. Maarten and St. Barts. During the backside winds my husband and I had to run outside to another shelter when a 2x4 impaled the roof and ceiling right above our heads.
Very sorry about all the destruction Beryl left in her wake on Carriacou, Union Island and surrounding islands.

Long history indeed with these storms. I need to read up on Lenny

@@JonathanPetramala just a week or two after Luis, Marilyn hit but brought mostly rain with it that washed away the salt water damage that the fierce winds of Luis did to all the trees and vegetation on the island.

I’ve lived thru hurricanes Hugo Marilyn and Irma and have the seen the destruction you all have seen. I know what it’s like to lose your roof and have to stay put because going outside is far more dangerous with the debris every where. It is an experience that you can’t really ever get a feel for from a third party perspective. Especially if the storm is moving super slow, you’re exposed to the eye wall for hours.
I applaud you all for documenting the power of the wind storm and for spreading the word that the fine folks of Carriacou are in need of help. They will build back stronger.
Building codes in many other islands have changed in response to the strong storms. Now the roofs are anchored into the walls using concrete and steel and tied down with hurricane clips. And some homes have a concrete ring beam around the entire roof. Thick cement ring beam anchoring down the roof. All rafters have a portion that is encased in the concrete ring beam. Hopefully when they build back they adopt newer building codes to keep them safe for decades into the future.

A very diplomatic statement “This is not ideal” 😂 All kidding aside, what devastation. I hope that everyone is recovering as best as possible. ❤

Haha, yeah, as you see I am pretty even keeled in any situation, so if I say that it means things are pretty extreme lol. It’s a slow process, made more difficult by low income levels and relative isolation, but it’s not an overwhelming number of people impacted so there is hope within half a year, it will be a much improved place. I believe and hope by the time carnival rolls around in February they will be ready for a few visitors.

Thankfully the building itself was very solid. Honestly not many roofs on the entire island survived intact
