Our Spithaubens are great little hens! They get along in our mixed flock well and do not seem to be bullied by the larger, bossier hens. They are a little shy but will eat treats out of our hands and let us pet and pick them up. They do seem to like to "sit at the Swiss table" in the coop and roost together. They consistently lay medium white eggs; although are not heavy layers. We really love our little Swiss Misses!

We'e only had one hen and one rooster for a few months, but our experience is similar. The appenzellers get along fine with various other hens and three Bourbon Red turkeys. They all eat together without fussing and the app's find their own roosts the bigger birds can't get to when they feel like it. Ours spend most of their time in a large coop. They seem very happy and healthy, but keep in mind the coop is not overcrowded and they have both room to move and fly, and several cozy roosting spots up high.
We find them delightful to have around, and while not exactly cuddly they're not skittish either. We pick ours up almost every day. The rooster will soon find his footing on your hand or arm and fly off a bit, but the hen will let you pet her for a few minutes. Sometimes she'll come down from a roost and sit on your shoulder while you're tending to the coop or run. She lays 2 or 3 eggs a week at less than a year old. I'll be interested to see if she keeps laying through the winter as I've read they often do.
I wouldn't base an entire operation around them, but they're fun to have in the flock. I heartily recommend getting a couple. :)

@@HobbyFarmGuys yes, they're easy to work with and a lot of fun to have around. We really enjoy having them as part of a more "normal" flock.

They are a great free range bird and lay lovely white eggs. They can avoid predators like a champ!

Steve spent a couple of years living in Germany and does speak the language some...though he doesn't think his German is very good.
