Heidi, thanks for taking time to do this. As you and I have talked, business books are your marketing/expertise visibility. Love that you did this survey. Thanks! 🙂
I wholeheartedly agree that it's much harder to be found today because of the sheer number of books being published every year. I made almost $900 on my fiction and low content books last year, and went over the $1K mark for my other ventures. I'm confident I'll go over $1K on book sales this year - fingers crossed. This was very interesting and thanks for sharing!
Congrats on what you've accomplished in a challenging market, Shanon! Here's to making the magic 1K. Truly appreciate your support of the survey and my channel. Have a lovely day! ☀
I love this video! Sorry I've been MIA. life got a little busy. :-) How's Laddy? This is such a valuable resource for the community! I always find it so interesting. I'm sad to hear the income is stagnant. I think that the being found being more difficult is really interesting. I wonder if the algorithm on Amazon will continue to evolve to try and improve that problem. I hope you're well my friend.
Barrett, I’ve been MIA from TH-cam, too. So no worries… ever! Yeah, self pub income isn’t great, though there are rare exceptions (as with everything). Being found is only going to get more difficult I’m afraid. While the algorithms could improve visibility chances, the deluge of “sponsored” offerings will drown out even the most SEO-friendly book details. I wish I could be more optimistic, but I’m realistic. BTW, I’m kind of on a retirement track and not posting like before. More personal and family priorities. I know you can relate. I’m so glad to hear from you! As always, sending ❤️ and thanks to you guys and Miss Brylee!
@@HeidiThorneChannel I’m so glad you’re taking more time for yourself. We heart you on here and all the platforms! I’ll keep in better touch behind the scenes. Hope Laddy is keeping you busy! 💜
These 'spectacular' results. I caught that sarcasm, Heidi, lol. Found your channel today after inquiring whether Substack and Patreon accounts are even worth the effort. Already listened to three of your episodes. Really appreciate you posting with these industry insights. You tell it like it is. This income survey was just sad. Jesus. I wonder if authors just have that mindset that if they publish it, the sales will automatically be instant and constant, when the reality is you then must market and advertise your books full time for years on end. As soon as you let off on that gas pedal, sales literally go to zero each month. I hadn't published a book since 2018 after the 3rd in my mystery thriller trilogy, but made $1,400 in one book signing event alone this year - based on a one-hour lecture. Was my biggest single payday, err payhour, ever. I felt like a lawyer. Plus, I had travel expenses taken care of and a nice $300 speakers fee. But that lecture invite offer was based on years and years of marketing relevant to that audience. The subject matter of the lecture was based on research conducted almost a decade ago when writing the first book in the series. So yeah, this was book 'income,' but if you look at my Amazon sales, it's like $50 income for this year - because I didn't do a damned thing in marketing/advertising on that distribution vehicle. So far, the only true 'instant' silver bullet for increased book sales has been on BookBub. Incidentally, I also made $5,000 in designing maps for another author's soon-to-be self-published WWII book. Go figure.
Glad you enjoyed the video and found value in it! True, it's challenging to make "income" from self publishing. But glad to hear you had some return from your book signing and such. What's even more challenging these days is that advertising on Amazon is more expensive than it was in the past (speaking from experience). I dropped my ads there, too, because the ROI wasn't there anymore. It just gets more and more competitive in the self publishing space. Interesting you've found another income stream for maps. What a world. Thanks for watching and good luck with your publishing and entrepreneurial adventures!

You are so welcome! Indeed, books are a part of a biz and content marketing package. Great catching up this week! ❤
