I was gonna place a system remotely for offsite backups. I'm thinking of encrypting the drive. I guess I have to encrypt the Data drive separately for best results?

I usually encrypt my whole install; however, I don’t need to do offsite remote. Encrypting the data drive rather than the system might be a better solution if you’re intending to remote into the system.

      @@linuxmench2118 That's the conclusion I'm coming to.

I don't have experience with offsite remote, but that's probably the best way to do it. You could setup your remote system locally just to make sure it's working properly and then move it to the remote location. I think that's how I would do it.

Was wondering why FDE didn't pop up when installing mint.. got it all set up now. Thank you!

You’re welcome. Were you able to encrypt the drive? Near the beginning of the install process, there is a pull down menu which gives you the option for FDE. it’s not noticeable unless you click on the menu. I wish they would make the FDE option more obvious.

is it possible to have a fully encrypted disk, but not entering password each time the computer is turned on?
if i want to remotely manage the computer and needs a restart, who will enter the disk encryption password each time?
windows bitlocker works fully automatic, no password is needed to unlock the drive.

I don't know if there is a way to remote to an encrypted computer that has rebooted. If there is a way, Chris Titus will know how to do it. He does a lot of remote work in Windows and Linux:
