- I will show you how to clean a Transmission on a Traxxas Rustler VXL, this is the same for the Slash, Bandit and Stampede, and you can also use this method to clean other Transmissions on other cars, the video is a bit long, so I am going to give you some options:
1. Watch the entire 17:49min video
2. Click here to skip the part about what you need 2:28
3. Click here if you don't want to watch me take the Transmission out of the vehicle 5:12
4. Click here if you just want to see how I clean the Gears and Transmission Case, and don't want to see how I take the Case apart 8:25
5. Click here if you just want to see how I clean out the differential 10:54
6. Click here if you just want to watch me put the Case back together 12:38
Thanks For Watching
Here is a site I made that will help you choose the best upgrade parts for your truck:

10 year old video and still helping people out! I used your video to take apart my rustler to see what was making noise. Unfortunately I think the spur is warped but I took the opportunity to grease the insides!
Good job. An actual assembly video that has everything IN focus, with clear and acted out instructions for every step. An idiot couldn't screw this up.
YOU ARE THE ONE THAT HELP ME BUILD THE KING, THANKS.
i don't have a rc car and i think i won't buy myself one but i watched the whole video well done mate!
Great video, very informative. I ended up stripping my transmission gears on my stampede by using a 21 tooth pineon gear upgrade. Lesson learned though which is use metal gears if you plan any upgrades either with regards to the motor or the pineon gear.
Excellent video - great information, and top quality editing! Thanks for posting it, it was very helpful. I took apart soooo much more than I needed to before I found this. I could not believe how badly I trashed my idler gear - I must have torn 5 teeth off of it. My son will be happy to get it back on the road again!
A very valuable presentation and nicely done. I have saved it for reference when I rebuild my Traxxas Bandit this week. Thank you!
I use this stuff called fast dry multi purpose solvent. let me tell you, this stuff works wonders for cleaning gears. its also a good idea to remove the rubber seals on the bearings and blast through them with that cleaner solvent stuff. I am a super rc hobbyist so I have upgraded to stainless steel bearings and running 30,000 weight oil in the diff. grase is to thin and allows the inside tire to unload to easy for good handling.
Glad it helped, I got that clicking sound every time I go to my dirt track, so I have to go down and pick the dirt out of my spur with my pocket knife, so the first thing I did was get the RPM gear cover, and that made it even worse because the top of the gear cover kept popping up and letting dirt into the gear cover, and since the bottom of the gear cover is sealed off the dirt collects in there and keeps getting in the spur (see next comment.....)
Thank you for the best video on youtube bud!! Seriously, I've been looking for a video that shows me how to take everything apart down the the diff and this is the ONLY one! Once again thanks, great vid!
Thanks! I recently did this based on your video. Very helpful! I used some thicker grease in the diff (White Grease with Teflon). Gives it a much more 'limited slip' feeling to it.
man i had this clicking sound. looked at my ears and they looked fine.came to your video and it was really helpful. luckily when i took a very close look i saw a grain of sand in my spur. ONE FREAKING GRAIN OF SAND! think i might invest in a rpm cover. thanks for your great vids anyways
I broke my transmission case and got a new aluminum one...Now I have to tak everything apart and it looks like a pain in the ass...LOL
Good tutorial by the way...
this was a great video man I just got me a used Rustler I am building for Speed runs and I wanted to see what it was like inside the transmission now I know thanks a bunch buddy
Brilliant, should be required viewing for all traxxas owners!
I usually just clean my plastic parts in water minus bearing and gears.. plain old plastic. much easier and I mix a little windex and wd-40 in and it gets it scary clean, I usually let my bearings sit in oil for a while. Very good video
@ScienceyCubes Rustler Vxl Is AMAZING but lately I've heard these noises coming from the transmission so thats why im here to learn how to take it apart properly
I am going to the beach next week and I am thinking about taking my Rustler VXL. You think that's a bad idea? I was thinking I could just clean it real good when I get back home. If they are ok to drive on sand, do you know of a good paddle tire and wheel set I could pick up pretty cheap? Thanks and great videos!
Other than that I don't know, if you want to you could give me more details such as which tires you are running, and what battery you are using, and do you do a lot of off-roading.
great video man now i can put my traxxas back together
i shedded 3 of the 4 planetary gears in my rustler vxl on 3s lipo. i was pulling wheelies and hitting a speed bump with just the rear tires...doing a forward flip and landing back on all fours. did it 20 or so times before the diff shredded.
Hello, thanks for the video - i just want to know the name of the black plastic protector that protects the motor and the connections on the rear. it is on the beginning of the video. Thanks
@peroxidal Yes, they won't overheat and /or get stripped at high speeds like the plastic ones.
great vid man thanx im getting a rustler vxl in a few weeks and am just gunna take the gears out and grease them with smoother grease
Actually lithium grease works pretty good for the diff. Since it isn't sealed the silicone grease is more likely to work it's way out. Lithium grease is thicker and stays inside better and if you pack it full it works more like a limited slip giving equal power to both wheels... which is better for off road driving. The silicone grease is good for driving on pavement though as you really don't need the diff to act like it's locked.
This man is awesome, nice tutorial, from France
What a great video - I like how you fast-forwarded in parts! thanks
3 years after getting the rustler brushles ; i dediced to open the transmision, It was as new as first day...I think... absolutly good
I use only 9.9 volts no tooths destroyed
sorry my english!!!
when you took that gear cover off, is that where i would put the pinion gear to make it go 70mph?
i got a question... at 05:43... when you removed the tape... does the transmission come stock with the tape over it? thanks :D im just curious lol...
Cool vid man. Helped me out a bunch
I use soap and water and wash every part on my truck so the new grease goes on a clean surface, how do all the plastic parts hold up on Traxxis? Everything is aluminum on my Associated RC-10 so I want to know how good some of the newer rides are holding up.
it works great in my Rustler, especially at the track, because if I accelerate rely fast, and the back end starts to slip out the gyro corrects it before I even notice it.
Great video! easy to follow and great instructions. thanks!!
@redheart99 seems to me he worked hard to get it and keeping it clean will last forever its good to see that the younger kids are taking this hobby and making good use to it i hope his stampede last long so the fun will last
i got a rustler today :), performance is amazing
im only 15 lol. good you will be on your way to being the smartest kid in the world in no time.
Once you take the gears out of the transmission case could you take the empty case and wash it out in soapy water??
I noticed the second grease (white) was diffrent from the first. What kind did you use outside the differential?
One More Comment Exremely Nice Video Very Simple and every little step is there Thank you very much.
Awesome thanks for sharing. Needed to know this, got an aluminum gear box coming in the mail
i baught the pozitrain for my stampede puts full power to the wheels. only about 15 bucks to. It replaces the 5 small gears inside the differential gear for one pice, this allows both wheels to spin at the same time in the same direction. No more opposite directions with no load.
Nice vid, should come in handy for my Rustler build
Great rebuild tutorial for the Magnum 272! A faster way to get the old grease out of the gear teeth is to use a tooth brush.
This really help me a lot thank man
It depends, I would clean it out every 200hrs or so, but if you bash in wet muddy conditions, then you should clean it out every 100hrs or so.
I bash every other day or so in dry conditions for about an hour and I clean mine out once a year.
Hey, I get the same car. I stripped a gear fully. What is the best new transmission to buy? thanks!
So white lithium grease for the gears in the transmission other than the diff and then the diff has silicone grease? Thanks
was the grease you put on all the gears before you put the on the other side of the case lithium grease or ?
PLEASE HELP!
gd video have you tryd like associated diff lube?
keep up the great work on your videos
i heard you said : motor guard = it that i can look for into amazon.com or there is a different name?
@TheUHUstick
your idle gear is messed up does it make a grinding noise when you give it some throttle
hello. i to have a rusty
umm all i have is black grease. not sure if its silicone. but would getting the white grease for the housing gears be recommended
(im about to replace my bad gear housing with a aluminum one. old one busted when hit a fence lol.) i swear that fence came from no where
Yes, I think I could, but I am not sure what the limit is.
Ok, thanks, I might try it! Keep the vids coming!
you seem to really know your stuff i would of never of thought of that :)
how often do you have to do this, please please reply thank you
I use an old toothbrush to clean out the teeth on the gears. Also for those who like a super clean gear case like me,you can wash the empty case in hot soapy water then use compressed air to dry. Good video though
Hey, i have a question... I just bought a Rustler yesterday. "its not the one in the picture"
i was driving it for about 5 mins, than out of the blue, the tires quit moving, but the transmission is still running when i press the trigger, i took it apart, the black gear teeth or what you call it, its not touching the motor...
Thanks for the video! It was really helpful
I want a stiffer diff for less slip. My Slash comes stock with "grease" in the diff. Traxxas sells different WT "OIL" that comes in a variety of WT from 10k to 100k... is it just grease and they call it oil?
were did you get the front and rear bumpers 4 ur rustler?
@cheesedude24 The slipper is the same as the older models, the new models use metal diff, metal top gear and idler gear but slipper clutch is still like the older one
Awesome, thank you for this easy to follow tutorial! 5 Stars!
When you say you are going to clean these up (the gears).are you talking about just water washing off old oil grease?
you should get something in the hpi line such as savage xl or the hellfire just sugjesting
You can boil the trans case too, it makes the plastic stronger n clean
@bixelstix96 hey man, and yes same thing happened to my stampede vxl, 2nd day i had it the gears inside the diff stripped, a few teeth were completely snapped off.
these metal gears alot better than the plastic?
does the rustler come with steel gears or plastic?
if you take the motor out of the truck and give the truck a gentle push, dose it glide smoothly and quietly, if that's fine then it might have something to do with your gear mesh or the gear ratio, if you count the teeth on the larger gear (Spur), and divide it by the number of teeth the smaller gear has (pinion), then multiply that number by 2.72, your number should be around 10 to 15, any lower than 10 and you are in trouble.
(see next comment..........)
How often do you clean your trans out?
thanks for the video. helped me out a lot
is this necessary? How often should it be done?
Oh, I see you have a gyro, I have the same in my helicopter xD How does it work on the car? I have a stampede and might get a gyro for it!
Which is the best way to reset the reverse on your controller
Yes can you use screw driver to do this instead of the eds Allen wrench
so I just got some 32p gears and will be running without a gear cover, witch is suppose to eliminate the problem, I haven't tried them out yet so don't know for sure.
PM me if you need more info.
yes it is, I have another video showing it as well.
Thankyou very much for this good tutorial!
I will use ut someday ;).
there caled gurb screws or set screws just so hapens i need to rebuild my trany thanks for the vfd
will litium grease work for the differentail?
Is tht a gyro on top of the servo box ?
where did u get that turn table thing that ur car is on
where did you buy the grease and wrenchs
What car stand are you using??
@peroxidal Spur should ALWAYS be plastic. They're a fail-safe if you land with full throttle so you strip the spur and don't grenade the whole transmission.
Where could i get silicon grease easiest? At my LHS (Local HObby Shop) or like a home depot?
are these the tires from the stampede?
@forresttrenaman where did you git those red tools
Is clear silicone grease safe for traxxas transmission
how do you ge the iderler gear off of the input shaft. my input shaft is bent. please help
where did you by the grease and wrenchs
THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL..
how often you clean your transmission?
Great Job Mate Nice!!
What backwheels are you using??????????
Excellent video!
@cheesedude24 The slipper clutch what traxxas uses is already a metal one. What do you mean?
