    Scott here from Chernobyl Studios and today I'm going to show you a reverb trick I like to do when I mix black metal songs.
    The song we're working on is called Burning Obsidian Sun by the new project Obsidian Sun. (This is a new project created by Obscura from Asagraum and Avernal Moon from Cabra Negra.) It needed to be evil, big, atmospheric, dark, and ultimately fall square in the black metal genre.
    So one of the ways I did that was with the reverb trick I'm about to show you in this video.
    Enjoy!

    8:07 "I don't have any shame in using presets."
    THANK YOU! Not that you should lean purely on presets, but if you're using a plugin that has a preset is exactly what you're looking for, use it. I like to use a mix of presets and stuff that I dial in myself, depending on the plugin and what I'm aiming for.
    Great video as always. This is definitely a trick I'm going to play around with.

      Work smarter, not harder. Sometimes the presets don't work and can be tweaked, but absolutely yeah, if the shoe fits... wear it!

    Thank you so much I've been looking for exactly this type of thing! I dont play black metal more like punk with an osdm sound instrumentally and clean vocals and I've been looking for a way to make my mixes sound more like a band in a room with some atmosphere because I'm doing everything with amp sim and midi drums! Thank you so much!!!

    I always was fascinated with reverbs on toms from Mayhem D.M.D.S recorded by Pytten. A tutorial about this effect and how to reach it?

    • @seitani68986
      @seitani68986 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Essentially; send your toms through a plate reverb with some pre-delay and relatively fast decay. Mix to taste. Basically the same thing as Scott here explains, just applied to toms and snare.
      De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was recorded at Grieghallen, wich is a concert hall, so the tom sound was propably achieved with some actual room micing.
      On a side note, it might come across as something else since the toms are (mostly) loud as hell and other elements in the mix allow them to blast through.
      For example Night's Blood by Dissection. The same plate reverb effect can be heard on the toms and Nödtveidt's vocals.

      @@VincentVegardSvart About the Mayhem tom sound from DMDS. I think most people overlook this, but in KVLT Drums II/Ugritone Drums if you go to the FX tab in the UI it will give you the option to add one-shot samples for kick, snare, and toms. They have incredibly accurate samples that come with the software and there are a pair that emulate the kick, snare and tom sounds from DMDS. If I want only the reverb, use an envelop filter to cut out the tom hits, then use the MIDI with your original tom MIDI. Takes some work but I can almost promise you won't get closer to DMDS than that.

      @@user-zr2pz8rr2l nice, thanks for the tips. I work with midi drums (EZD 3 and some various expansion like Metal Machine, Made of Metal and Death Metal).
      I have curiosity about Ugritone, the nice one sampled with Inferno from Behemoth.

    Thank you Scot.I was waiting a long time for this kind of explenation to this topic.One more question.Would any stock reverb be good to do this?What kind of reverb we need if it is not Vanhala?

  • @andyje
    @andyje 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do this on my drums to "Fill them out" but I use a lofi reverb (the waves one it think) just too create that atmosphere I need plus some of the artificial feedbacks are fun, I wouldn't mind learning the "telephone EQ" effect, I think I've done it wrong in past.

    Watched this a couple times the only part I am not understanding is if all the instruments are sent to the room reverb bus then another dry send of all the instruments to the master bus or do all the instruments only get fed to the room reverb bus then on to the master bus. Hope i am making sense.

    @chernobyl studios If i solo my room FX track i still get a full blast of the pure guitar tracks also - not the "hall down" only room sound. I checked gain levels of sent etc. What i`m doing wrong then??

      You can see me... keep your pants on! :D
      Dense mixes eat reverb - and in general transients and make things sound "far away" - which is perfect for a genre like black metal, but now you can use reverb without losing the immediacy of the instruments... so still sounds big and clear!

    Do you send audio to reverb from groups only or from single tracks too?

    • @ChernobylAudio666
      @ChernobylAudio666  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the room verb, I tend to do it from the groups so they are as a "whole" going through the room reverb. For plates (snare, for example) I'll do that individually

    I see that you send all buss instruments to the FX Room. My question is, what is the difference if you just put Reverb FX in Master?

    • @ChernobylAudio666
      @ChernobylAudio666  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the reverb FX is placed direclty in the master, then every track from the session goes through the reverb, and it'll be a giant mess. Putting all of the FX into a bus of itself, and then choosing which instrument to send to the reverb and tweaking it there before it passes into the master gives me control and makes sure I can have only the instruments I want getting the reverb and to the exact amount I want.

      @@ChernobylAudio666 last question, does the guitar track itself also have it's own reverb FX inserted? or none? and just send it to room for a reverb.
