Watching the deck crew during the landings is scary. That must be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Giant powerful engines, super-flammable fuel, needing to move fast to get planes out of the way, of course wet and slippery decks during bad weather, and worst of all the knowledge that a plane can crash onto the deck wiping everybody out. My respect for those who do that job.
Having served as an officer in the German navy from 1979 until 1985 I can very much relate to this splendid series. We even did an RAS with HMS Lyness that is shown here as part of the force. However, what always annoys me is that some off the can sound is used for dubbing the aircraft engine sound, in this case the Seaking's Rolls Royce Gnomes at 1:41, that rather sound like a single Alvis Leonidis. Just a minor flaw I admit, but in an otherwise flawless episode of 'Sailor' it appears to be strange that the makers couldn't fix the typical Seaking sound.
Just a slight correction to your post. The support ship you mention is the RFA Lyness, one of three 'Ness' class dry stores support ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The Fleet tanker in the opening sequence is RFA Olmeda, I was a first trip Deck Cadet onboard at the time. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary is a civilian manned organisation responsible for the RNs underway support and logistics.

Our Navy is excellent; in the same way that our NHS and Education systems are still excellent.That is because they rely on a highly trained and professional workforce, armed with very good technology; but put under increasing personal strain and accountability...And there is a tipping point...and those systems are becoming less efficient all the time, because the systems of beauracracy and accountability (The "inspectors") have become too dominant in the last 20 years. They now counteract the professionalism of the people in our Defence, Health and Education Systems.
Serious steam catapults and the coolness to pull that ring if it's a failed shot and you're going in. Landing at night is probably the balls department.

QE Carriers are way behind schedule, the Navy of the 70's - 80's was far superior to anything we have today. There is no way we could get a flotilla together at short notice, sail to the south Atlantic, and carry out a land offensive these days. Ex Submariner !!!

Number 9's are when you get a punishment in the way of shit jobs, but whatever you get given you can't get them in your own place of work, so if you're a stoker i.e. work on Ships engines you'd be told to work somewhere else. When you're on number 9's you have to muster i.e. report 4 times a day once in the morning around 06;30, lunchtime, after secure (end of the working day) and around 9 at night and work an hour each time.
Is 809 FAA not going to fly from Q.E. On the F.35?It will be good to see the Old Phoenix rise from the Sea over an R.N. Carrier again! If the current Aircrew match the Prowess and Daring for which the FAA was known 'back in the day' they will be Outstanding.If any Service can get the Max out of a new Aircraft the FAA can!
How did the RAF squadron maintainers get on board? Where they already on before the ship left? Or did the ship have to pull into another port to pick them up? For the USN, we would have loaded all our tools/gear days (or even a week or so) prior. Then the day of we report.
+Alfredo Pacheco Jr all the aircraft are from the Fleet Air Arm, not RAF. The RAF pilots mentioned are, I assume, exchange pilots; the RAF used the same aircraft. So no need for RAF ground personell on board.
+João Rita Not quite true, the FAA was being run down, and all fix wing being transferred to the RAF, hence the RAF being aboard, we were left with the rather good SHAR. Though if the Ark had been in commission, no Falkland's war.
@@jlvfr the RN wasn’t replacing the Phantom or Buccaneer crews at this stage as they knew they were losing the carriers and the RAF which already had these aircraft were taking them on, so there were a lot of RAF crews on board as well as a number of ground crew to make the numbers up.

The Phantom was an American plane with a British engine (we converted it from GE to RR). The Buccaneer was all British.
I wish our new carriers were proper CATOBAR configuration like Ark Royal and Eagle were....
