They were not. They could implode at any time, killing your kids. The CRTs in this video are already depressurized, which makes the video quite boring.

Thick glass doesn't mean it was a tank - dropping the TV on its back will probably kill it (the electron gun can break off and HV electronics can be shorted). And who is stopping you from putting a glass on a screen? No one. Don't throw stuff at it = problem solved.
