I post this here, and say the only good thing I can about the show. Nishiki's story is the only one that was left the most untouched, and I think that overall its got good elements to it given they fleshed out his downfall, and lost of his sister in a decent way. A huge chunk of ep5 was just Nishiki slowly unraveling how Dojima used Nishiki's own dying sister against him to make money, and how that broke him. Like that one element is what I was wanting from this tv show is them making the first game's story better, and fleshing out characters. That was until Ep6 where it goes bonkers, and they reveal he is a serial killer going around carving upside down pentagrams into people's chest. That was.... something. Haruka isn't Haruka. She isn't w/ Crime dad, Kiryu at all in the show. She is just a spoiled lazy kid w/ a sitter. She barely has screen time. Same for Majima. The show feels like a generic J-drama script they slapped the Yakuza branding onto. It fails to feel like a yakuza show. It could be its own story w/ it's own character and it would still be awful as it's missing the tone, the amazing characters, the reasons I love Yakuza. This show wouldn't be getting discussed w/o the yakuza branding. Ifs boring and mediocre. This isnt the fallout or last of us tv show. Its just somebody elses script/story. Its on par with the witcher tv show, and the horrible choices made for it. Im so tired of the "you just wanted kiwami 1" defense too. No. I wanted a good adaptation of the source material, which the show isn't. They fucked up so many character up, and wildly misunderstood them. What is the point of adapting something if you get basic characterization wrong? These arent the character I love and its not a good way for me to show people unfamiliar w/ the game the reason i love these character cause fhey arent the same people. Not even close. All the nuece and great character storytelling is non existent from this show. Basic plot details in any other story are dragged out for the sake of a mystery like how they saved the reveal of Kazama killing all the orphan's families for the end of the show. Like, thats the cliffhanger of the tv show. Meanwhile any actual compelling mystery is missing. The show is competing with cinematography of the original Yakuza game. Technicalissues exist all over the show where it cuts people off mid sentence and scenes just end. The song choices are generic hollywood songs. Nothing about the choices made feels like someone that likes Yakuza. The characters they introduce muddy the plot, while details/characters/interactions cut from the original stories make no sense. Kashiwagi is just gone, so are the star dust boys. Saejima is basically just a random thug that acfs like Majima 2.0 so they fundamentally misunderstand the character of Majima and make him an actual psycho instead of a man hiding his emotions under an unpredictable personality. And completely reject saejima's character from the games. I could keep going but it feels pointless. I fail to see how anything about this show is ever good.
My main problem with the show is I didn't feel like I was watching an adaptation of the Yakuza games, but rather just a show about the yakuza. The thing that makes the games memorable is not just the story and characters, but the overall vibe and atmosphere from it. The combat, the music, the substories, the side activities and minigames. There's so much that makes Yakuza, Yakuza, and how it stands out on its own. But I felt like the show had none of that. Like, I'm not here to watch a regular show about a yakuza crime drama. I'm here to watch an adaptation that captures the feeling of the games. You don't wanna make a one to one adaptation? Fine. You wanna make an original story that could equate to an alternate timeline or reality? Fine. But at least make it so it fully captures the essence that the series is known for. Because so far, I got none of it from it.
I think Kiryu throwing that uppercut was him being in a weird state, kinda day dreaming and reliving his memories. then he hears Miho saying "show me how to throw an uppercut" and he kinda does it in his head but he was actually doing it physically. I think the show implies that he didn't even know he had done it. I still believe that Nishiki not telling him before the match is the dumber thing in the script, at least Kiryu throwing the uppercut has an explanation even if it requires some mental gymnastics. 👃
I think it's this, plus TV Kiryu having that same characteristic of being competitive and really hating to lose. He's already taken a lot of hits, so he's not at his clearest, and Nishiki told him what was really going on, but he doesn't really have the time or capacity to process that. They were all hyped about this being THE moment when they'd be able to save Miho, and now all of a sudden he's told that's a lie? Even if he weren't in the middle of a fight, that'd throw him for a loop. And as far as we know, this was the very first time he'd ever been told to throw a fight, which must have felt unthinkable to him, since he's been winning all this time, and idolized the previous "Dragon," who was also an undefeated champion.
I believe the reason Nishiki not telling him is because this has been kiryu's dream his whole life and Nishiki knew he wouldn't just throw it away. He wanted Kiryu to think he lost legit so he doesn't hate Nishiki for making him. While the game version of Kiryu would of done this in a heartbeat, this kiryu hasn't really lost anything yet so he hasn't developed that side of him. There is also the competitiveness between the 2 bro's as 'who gets to save the day' and the love triangle that makes me think at this point in the show Nishiki is trying to solve this problem himself without kriyu's help this time to prove himself.
The reveal of Nishiki as the Demon was so obvious and stupid I legit took some copium and theorized that the Guy wasn't actually Nishiki, but a Jingweon body double (he fights with a karambit like Joon-gi Han) and that would be the big Twist for Season 2 (if this piece of nothing ever gets one) but the moment he started to whine to Kiryu I had to come to terms that, yeah, this is the best they came up with.
Haven't seen the show personally, only clips, but can we give a shoutout for the dub? Everyone is great, but especially Aleks Le as kiryu, tbh if kiryu is in another yakuza game, I would prefer aleks to 100% voice him in the future

👃 i smell a new video with The Yakuza 4 This was an informative watch, it was cool! I was honestly scared of your guys' opinions on the show because I actually liked the show. I think a lot of people's expectations with the show were kind of not realistic mainly because of their idea of a 1:1 remake. And because it *wasn't* a perfect adaptation of the game, and because their voices were so loud about it, I honestly did not feel safe expressing how much I enjoyed it. I talked about this in Gokudoni's comments, but expecting the show to be a "reimagining" and "alternate universe" of the Yakuza 1's story kept me open-minded enough to receive all the changes they made. Were they perfect? No, it was never gonna be perfect to the game. But I enjoyed the twists and polishing they attempted in the show: the gang, the driving plot, the different character interactions. I'm with Snowiest, I'm glad they didn't make it an exact reflection of the game. I think what draws me into the show the most is the characters. I reacted quite a bit to most of them: some positively to the point where I felt like I was in their shoes, going through these struggles and grief, trying to find my own footing in the messed up world that life had decided to give me. But some negatively to the point where I wanna teach them a lesson: they had my blood boiling because they were THAT unlikable. And that's what makes a story. The viewer doesn't need to like EVERY single character. Otherwise, it would lack depth, not everyone is supposed to be a friend/ally. I appreciate you guys creating a space for the community to open up and have conversations about topic like this. As divisive as Twitter has made the show, you guys brought up valid points and perspectives that didn't feel belittling or aggressive. Thanks
1:34:22 The main issue people have with that scene is not how Kiryu went against Kazama’s wishes, it’s that he condescendingly declares that Kazama is “not his real father”, so therefore Kiryu doesn’t have to listen to him. An important distinction!!! While it still fits with the young, brash Kiryu we see, it’s still a fair issue people have with the series since we don’t really see much of what Kiryu thought of his biological parents and how Kazama succeeded in establishing himself as a father figure to him before the 90s, so the fact that Kiryu continued to push Kazama aside even after he lost a finger for him and Nishiki becomes less understandable to the viewer.
I liked it its not exactly the same 1 on 1 but to me its still something new and fresh made me want to keep watching cause i wouldnt expect anything from what i already know..i dont think its bad as ppl say
My favorite character in the Like A Dragon: Yakuza show was the guy who just came from under the Nishiki's desk when Kiryu was climbing the stairs full of wounds in the last episode. 👃🐽
#thenoseofdojima on a side note, can we all agree that the subtitles or captions on Prime Video are delayed as hell?!? Characters would talk, and the subtitles sometimes would flash on the screen for literally one second after they were done talking. Aside from that, the show gets between 5.5 or 6/10 for me
The show is a nightmare technically. Episode 2 was the worst, but people would just get cut off mid sentence, scenes just hard cut to the next scene, theres no flow to anything. Everything about the show feels amateur, and it was hard not noticing it.
@RWxAshley I noticed it, too. I might watch it again with English audio just to see if there's anything that I missed. But yes, it definitely could've been much better
I know everyone brings up the complaint about Kiryu saying “I want to become the Dragon of Dojima” is out of character, but honestly, I didn’t have a problem with this line. Imo, this is definitely something Kiryu would have said at that age if he knew about the title in the first place. Given his age during 1995 in this show I’m willing to cut them some slack on this one. What I CAN’T cut them slack on is them not justifying why Nishiki didn’t just try to explain to Kiryu why he should lose instead of immediately trying to spike his drink before that fight lmao
I can understand but isn’t kiryu 19 in the series in 1995, in 0 nishiki talks about how kazama beat the snot out of them when they were 18 and the next day they were yakuza, both of them are 20 in 0. But do you know what I didn’t know is taiga was 19 during the ueno seiwa hit.
Peoples first exposure to that line was out of context before the show released which makes it sound like Kiryu's trying to force a cool nickname on himself. In context, he's just aspiring to be like that strong fighter he saw once. I hope people chill on that one.
@@googyta I think it would have hit harder if it was “I will be your dragon of dojima” because to me that makes it more sound like a heavy burden that he is almost reluctant to carry but will do it for his family.
@@googyta which was still not right anyway, because Kiryu should never care about titles and such. The reason he wanted to join the yakuza was because his admiration to Kazama, not to a random prize fighter (who turns out to be kazama anyway, BLEH). Kiryu didn't asked to be called Dragon of Dojima, people started calling him that after his feats.
I think, that there's one thing I want to say, that wasn't said by most people I saw. I actually liked Demon subplot. Because of how this Kiryu has completely different motivations, Nishiki felt betrayed by him; by all-powerful Dojima; by Yumi; and, in the end, probably by the city, that Kiryu practically forced on them. So, instead of game Nishiki, who wanted to show that he's cool even without Kiryu, this Nishiki just wants revenge on everyone. I think, that at first Demon was probably only a way to cover up for Yakuza deaths (like in Judgement), but maybe it ended up damaging Nishiki psyche even more. Maybe it's not a very good subplot overall, but I liked it, because changed Nishiki got his own changed motivations and ideals. Like Dojima wanted to create history by making Millenium Tower, Nishiki wanted to create history by destroying a lot of Tojo and probably also do some bad things to the town. Sadly, I went in with A LOT of expectations, still remembering the One Piece live action being great. So I was much more disappointed than you guys. P.S. 2015 theatrical adaptation was great. Sad you didn't reference it.
Another banger episode! Most of Snowiest's takes were literally the same as mine but for the western soundtracks shown in the series didn't bother me 100% I liked the series from the beginning to end, I'm pretty much a person that can be pleased with anything. Hope we can see more episodes of The Four (cheeky LAD 8 reference) could be filler or anything before Pirates in Hawaii podcast episode comes like in the Infinite Wealth episode. 👃
up early but at what cost so i definitely needed this. i was disappointed at first, but for what the show is by itself i give it a 3/5. thanks for throwing this up this morning
my main opinion on the show is that, as an adaptation, it sucks, as a retelling, its fine the biggest problem for me is the characterisations and some of the choices they made with certain characters. i dont like mantels in general, so the idea that the dragon of dojima being a mantel, its just dumb imo, it takes away from kiryus legacy that he leaves, and instead is just a wannabe, but ofc, its just a really dumb roundabout way of having Kiryu want to join the Yakuza because of Kazama Nishiki and Miho is the best part of the show, Aiko is the worst part of the show, splitting yumi/mizuki into 2 characters, and making one an irredeamable smug asshole, i just didnt like it
i own and beat all the yakuza games on xbox and playstation besides the zombie game on ps3 that said, i dont even know the full story cus i get bored and skip cutscenes a lot but i do like most of what i seen, but sometimes it just goes on too long for me to watch it all, i like the games for the other reasons like walking through japan, and beating tf out goons, so its not like im claimin to be huge yakuza fan cus of the story, i dont even know the full story even though i beat a lot of the games twice each that said, i couldnt even finish the 1st episode, not even as a yakuza fan, i still would have been bored, just seemed like another generic low bedget amazon asian action crime drama cheap show lmaooooooo ill try again maybe but maybe not
Dude please I beg you, screw rewatching the series play the games again and try to sit through the cutscenes give your self an opportunity to enjoy it and become a proper fan. It may seem like a drag but it will be worth it bro
@@phenom4599 but the games are sooo long, and theres sooooo many games with so many cutscenes that make it even longer, and i alrdy beat them on xbox AND playstation and i have so many other games i havent beat yet 🥲😂
I didn’t want a “one to one” adaptation but I expected the basics of the original story to be mostly consistent. Instead it felt like I was watching someone’s pitch for a completely original crime drama series that had to use the Yakuza IP to get people to watch. It wasn’t adapting much of anything imo other than surface level iconography. My first thought watching it was “this would be a pretty good show on its own, but it ain’t Yakuza.”
Yeah they could've done a much better job at making this a greater introduction for people who are interested in the franchise, but also make fans happy at the same time.
I despise people who say everything is fine, and if you criticize, then you are not a fan or a "hater." Grow up! The show has nothing to do with the game. If we remove the names of the cities and characters, it is simply another poorly made series.
@@addablesky6203 "It's decent/okay" does not equal saying it's perfect. People need to drop the mentality that thinks saying something good about a mediocre product means anything more than that. It's funny because it tends to come full circle, so called "critics" hate it when people say something good about something they disliked, but then they end up misjudging that as a 10/10 rating as if there's absolutely no discussion is possible.

"He went from 18 Shots Saejima to 18 Shits Saejima" I'm dying .😂😂😂
👃 i smell a new video with The Yakuza 4
This was an informative watch, it was cool!
Every time i hear dojima say Suga i all imagine is froob going Suga deez nuts on his stream cause of one the hires in YLAD 😂
👃
احب ذا البودكاست ، احسكم اخوياي وجالس اسولف معاكم 😂😂🌹🌹
Love u all , keep going 🎉🎉
Also just gonna drop this 👃🏻🐉
My favorite character in the Like A Dragon: Yakuza show was the guy who just came from under the Nishiki's desk when Kiryu was climbing the stairs full of wounds in the last episode. 👃🐽
Let's goooo The yakuza 4 are back🔥😎
#thenoseofdojima on a side note, can we all agree that the subtitles or captions on Prime Video are delayed as hell?!?
At that point it doesn't matter, though. If he lost Miho would still have died and Dojima would've gotten his way.
Wait aren't Yuko and Miho separate characters? Ngl I got confused a few times in the show
Yuko is Nishiki's sister from the games, Miho is his sister in the show.
I wonder if you can get Mutahar in here just want to know his perspective on the series
On the bright side the podcast isn't 7 hours long
Maybe some other time in the next 5 years 🤣
Another banger episode! 👃
Dojima NOSE ryu!
I completely agree that they botched the fights. In several of them kiryu looks like he's using the force to hit people
Does ichiban English VA voices dojima in the show
Dojima 👃 Ryu
up early but at what cost so i definitely needed this. i was disappointed at first, but for what the show is by itself i give it a 3/5. thanks for throwing this up this morning
In my book Yuko or whatever was the name of the annoying girl that Yumi chased was the real villain.
1:33:09 just say Muay Thai we all know it’s Muay Thai lmao
👃 of Dojima
LIKE A DRAGON: INFINITE COPE
3 hours???? Perfect for this traffic!
I love the live action, and the english dub people, holy shit, nero as nishiki, eiji as kiryu, majima as majima, ichiban as dojima, such good casting
quit playing game
@@MiniDallas000 in a world where Kiryu's offical dub is Yon "Soyboy" Yea, It is a sad world without standards.
my main opinion on the show is that, as an adaptation, it sucks, as a retelling, its fine
the biggest problem for me is the characterisations and some of the choices they made with certain characters.
i dont like mantels in general, so the idea that the dragon of dojima being a mantel, its just dumb imo, it takes away from kiryus legacy that he leaves, and instead is just a wannabe, but ofc, its just a really dumb roundabout way of having Kiryu want to join the Yakuza because of Kazama
Nishiki and Miho is the best part of the show, Aiko is the worst part of the show, splitting yumi/mizuki into 2 characters, and making one an irredeamable smug asshole, i just didnt like it
*knows*
(nose?)
I am convinced a lot of people just hate on things even when they havent seen/played/read the things they hate on
I'm convinced people would blindly defend something just because its different.
@Kaimax61 I'm not i didnt like the show but it is true there are people who do that
Yakuza 3 haters:
tamiya info dump ahh video
👃👃
i own and beat all the yakuza games on xbox and playstation besides the zombie game on ps3
that said, i dont even know the full story cus i get bored and skip cutscenes a lot but i do like most of what i seen, but sometimes it just goes on too long for me to watch it all, i like the games for the other reasons like walking through japan, and beating tf out goons, so its not like im claimin to be huge yakuza fan cus of the story, i dont even know the full story even though i beat a lot of the games twice each
that said, i couldnt even finish the 1st episode, not even as a yakuza fan, i still would have been bored, just seemed like another generic low bedget amazon asian action crime drama cheap show lmaooooooo
ill try again maybe but maybe not
Dude please I beg you, screw rewatching the series play the games again and try to sit through the cutscenes give your self an opportunity to enjoy it and become a proper fan.
Don't think I've seen a single person say everything is fine with the show.
@@devilleon7 I have, at the very least, they say it's decent or okay
@@addablesky6203 "It's decent/okay" does not equal saying it's perfect. People need to drop the mentality that thinks saying something good about a mediocre product means anything more than that. It's funny because it tends to come full circle, so called "critics" hate it when people say something good about something they disliked, but then they end up misjudging that as a 10/10 rating as if there's absolutely no discussion is possible.
