This is wonderful but also a problem for me. He makes it look so easy that you think, "I can do that" . Then you realise his immense talent when you see just how difficult it really is
It is impressive demo. I am struggling to print in a relaxing mood and be decisive. It is amazing to see how you achieve deep darkness without overdoing it.

Great techniques, the brushes look like magic in your hand. Love the way you mix the colours use only 3 primary colours and apply them use your magic wands. Very enjoyable. Hope I can try this style of portrait paintings. I watched your video every week. Thanks.

I bought the brushes on line. The calligraphy brush didn’t look like the one Mr Chen uses even when new. The hair fell out so much I had hair everywhere. I guess I was too hard on it or something but not happy with my purchase. Love the vids however and thank you.

Would be very helpful to post the reference photo in details or even show a large version of it in video. A lot of us like paint along sometimes it's difficult when the reference is so small

Does it make a difference to start with the main object first or the background first ? What are the considerations. I usually start with the main figure first before I complement it with the background.
Hi, I am a student of Professor Chen's and just the other day, we had a painting session where a student asked the same question. His response was that there was no right way; it depended on you feeling. His personal preference is most of the time to paint the background after he knows where the main object will be located. This is because of his method of painting the large shapes first.
I am learning and practicing your paint technique. I have been struggling with wanting to put many details in my paintings and your videos are teaching me how to paint without all the tiny details. Thank you. can you tell me where I can buy a 3 paint well dish like you use. I have searched for this and can not find one. Thank you again for showing us your technique. I have purchased your brushes and love them.
Brian, you can find an Asian supermarket in your area and you will find it in the dishes area. Have fun. If you really can't get one in your location, I will try to find some in Boston.

Most time I used CP paper. and most time I use tape to all edges without wetting the paper when I paint small.

Which paper you prefer? Hot press or cold press. It’s looks so easy but really really difficult for me.
I use mostly cold pressed. Sometimes I use hot pressed for some delicate small painting.
