Every time I see a demo with Tom dated 1980, I’m always hesitant on the date. The Tusk tour didn’t end until September of that year, and i was under the impression that she and Jimmy didn’t meet until it was over. And that she and Tom didn’t get to be good friends until 1981. (She’s also said that the reason why this song was in the gothic trunk for so many years was because at the time, neither of them were working on an album, which wouldn’t be true of 1980 since he was doing Hard Promises and Bella Donna would have been on her mind.) I always pictured Starshine as being closer to 1984 or 1986, pre or post Rock a Little? But maybe I’m wrong??
I read an interview recently where Stevie said either right before or shortly after the start of the Tusk tour (late '79) she went to NYC to talk with Atlantic & Danny (Goldberg?) about a solo project and she asked for Tom to produce the album and got a "No". And then was asked how about meeting the guy that produces Tom Petty? And that's how she met Jimmy. But I've heard Stevie give many different versions of timelines for events of her career. Dates are not her strong suit.😁 But she had definitely met Tom Petty by mid 1980 when she would work on Bella Donna during brief breaks on the TUSK tour.
I'm surprised this demos have not had more views, we'll that makes it official that we are huge fans and found this GEM.
LOVE the 24 Karat version and I can't believe it took so long to get it out from this demo. Fun to hear how it started.
