  • Calvin and Hobbes, created by Bill Watterson, is widely regarded to be the best comic strip series of all time. During its short ten years of production carved a place for itself in the history books. But why, decades later, is the strip still so beloved? Professor Jelly shows the History of Calvin and Hobbes from its creation, to the lack of merchandising, the artistic struggles, and why Bill Watterson quit Calvin and Hobbes.

Great video. I think Bill Watterson is the artist I respect the most, period.
Makes sense that people badmouthed him, that's inevitable when you have too much integrity.

I don’t know who retired first. But it broke my heart when Waterson retired in rapid succession with Gary Larson and Burke Breathed. Comics haven’t been the same since.

I never realized until right now just how much Big Nate takes inspiration from Calvin and Hobbes.

Interesting video. I've got a couple Calvin and Hobbes comics I cut out of the newspaper stashed somewhere.

My three favorite cartoonists all seemed to quit about the same time: Bill Waterson, Berkeley Breathed and Gary Larson.

I agree. Calvin and Hobbes is a true masterpiece. I might make a video on it soon.

Thank you for sharing Bill Watterson's story of struggle. As with popular music, I was always assume things arrive fully formed, the artists were brilliant so success came easy, or they just got lucky and stumbled upon an awesome idea. Lightning in a bottle can happen, but overnight success can hide years of struggle in obscurity and plenty of misfires. When success finally comes along, it's more a testament to their perseverance and adaptation.

Loved growing up reading the collections that my parents had lying around the house, the balancing of humor with some really poignant moments is why i still think about this comic from time to time. Great video dude you had some very funny lines in there lol

A great man, Bill. A real artist. One of cartooning's greats. Like, how much money do you need anyhow? Like so many others he could have just hired staff to continue grinding out product.. but he did not. An honorable dude.
