Second, there is a relation of *depth* between two separate lines. There's a musical space, metaphorically speaking, for which as a soloist you need to have a dynamic range (not for loudness but for depth). All of these things are proven elements of *natural* musicianship, which is why audiences loved him, intuitively, but they were unfashionable and suppressed among so-called 'informed' musicians of the 20th century who tended to miniaturise (flatten) dynamics and to see notes as fixed points rather than (transposable) relations, the way musicians used to.
