- Sometimes you just hit a point when you feel like asking, is it time to give up? In this case, I knew it, and I wanted to do something about it. In the end Vlad Von Carstien was, in my opinion, greatly improved from my stopping point, and I feel like I've overcome a hurdle. My hope is that you can begin to recognize these types of sticking points in your own painting and overcome the hurdles to become a better miniature painter!

I'm glad you threw in the comment about "there are plenty of units that don't need this kind of treatment" I have seen many people that never get any models done because they are afraid that it wont be perfect. While I agree that you should always push yourself, sometimes 'Done is better than Perfect'.

Small correction though, not Nuln Oil, thankfully 😂. I use construction paper to void my brush, so I usually end up with a kind of wet spot off to my right. Especially when I’m glazing, which was what was going on right at that moment.
So glad it wasn’t $7 in wash!!!

I'm usually not fond of old metal WF models stuck on their tiny square base, but this one really benefits from switching for a round base. Got myself some Diaz demonettes from ebay, gonna give them round bases as well.
Those look awesome on rounds, much nicer than the plastic ones.

Just found your channel, getting back in the hobby after about 12 or so years break. My little boy is about to turn 1 year old next month and I felt like painting models again in the evening when he sleeps will be a great way to relax and rediscover my love for painting.

I really like how you pay attention to the second hand market and inform the viewer how much they can aspect to pay for certain mini's. Not many channels to that. Keep up the good work!
great video, my youngest is 19 months, I'm still trying to work out the life/family/hobby balance ... getting there slowly..
I’m glad you did a video on this topic cause it seems that I often get to that point and stop and need some motivation to keep going. 1 thing I’ve done to help get past this hump is when I “think it’s done” is I move to another model(s) and wait 2-3 days and then take another look at the mini, if I still think it looks done it’s done but if I see things I can improve on I pick it back up and start painting.

So many painters need to hear this. So many painters go the barest of steps to complete minis, which is completely fine, but it’s sad to see so much potential not utilized when that happens.

i just started painting about a month ago and it is obvious to me i am not good, but i will keep going and honestly i will detail to the extreme all my models because i just believe all of them to be precious and invaluable, i started on what i believe to be hard mode(forgefiend) made some mistakes, fixed them and retraced my steps, no matter how it ends i will be satisfied and i will always look back to it with joy and a bit of pride, thanks for saving minis and showing me the way of the painter.

Second, "If you SILL aren't motivated to paint something...the second time around...then yeah, give up. Put it away into your Pile of Shame, and forget about it. In 5 or 9 years you'll pull it out and think... 'Oh yeah! I remember this guy! Cool!'...and get that urge to paint it". ... This is general Life Advice from an old fart like me, not just for painting miniatures. Time is a nutty thing. It isn't really "tangible", but it is always there, pulling us along whether or not we like it or not. And you never know what's around the next bend that may inspire you...so just sit back, relax, and let the River of Time get you to your next destination.

(wow...kinda went all philosophical there for a moment...must me missing my wife more than normal today... :( Anyhoo, yeah. Just put it aside and wait for inspiration to hit. May be in a week, may be in a decade. :) ).
Some great subtle colours in this one. I do like that pallid flesh look, and the base has a cold look to it which really sets it off. Another fine model! Congrats on the baby, enjoy the well deserved time off youtube. Great job on the painting, I had an idea that you could darken the cape, and do some object source lighting from the eyes on each of those faces, then you could use that color to reflect on the rest of the armor and face for more realism.

Family and real life comes first, sir, and many congratulations to your family! I'm going to grab me a Vlad now and do my thing with it. I often feel the same way about my painting and one of the goals I am going to set for myself is to not stop until it looks *just right*--to step back and learn to say "It's not done yet," in a more objective manner. That and perfecting how to shade and highlight sword blades like that!

I liked the way the base was looking before all the grass and tufts were added, the red on the base from the airbrush made it look like the cape was glowing, which with those soul faces on it could have been a way to go. All that aside, fantastic work.

I've been asking similar questions about what I call "project creep", where you just want to add a bit more, or redo this part, or change this bit, etc. When is it time to say "enough" and call it good? Or when does the project speak to you and say, "keep going!" or "Ooh Ooh - Try this!" I've been building an older kit with crude detail and rather than settle, I decided to upgrade with better parts. You are right - there is a time to push yourself and take it to the next level.
