    This coat is GLORIOUS! I'm just nuts about embroidery so this coat has me drooling. I was really surprised that those darts went in so unobtrusively. I thought there was no way that could look anything but obviously mismatched! I'm very excited about the finished product!

    Thanks for the shoutout!! The coat looks beautiful, and what a brilliant idea to sign your name under the pocket flap!
    Can you perhaps cut the pattern from the armscye to the tip of the bust dart and rotate the extra material around to there, so next time the dart can go on the plain part of the front and won't interrupt the embroidery?
    I love that black dress with the double puffed sleeves at 9:19!

    I loved seeing that your husband's coat appeared to be in a museum exhibit. Your work is so absolutely exquisite that museums should request to have your pieces on loan. I just hope they don't think that they should let just anyone touch it because it's a "new historically accurate/inspired reproduction."

    I love that you're signing your work. More of Cos Tube needs to be doing this... Absolutely stunning work, as always. Just jaw dropping. Never apologize for taking your time on a project - what you're doing is modeling that this stuff simply does not happen overnight. Here's to healthy creating...
    _Technical Question_ - How much does the embroidery distort the fabric, even with the help of the tearaway interfacing? I have a project that I'm working on, a 1950's weskit, that I plan on quilting in the style of the Tristan Quilt for the FR Competition. Right now I'm attempting to guess at how much extra fabric to leave on the preliminary cut pieces to accommodate any shifting of the fabric when I quilt into the wadding and cotton layer underneath. Because, if I get to the end of the quilting and find I don't have any seam allowance left... let's just say the world chocolate supply will be in danger...
    Historically they replaced coat linings. Well. Consider my mind blown. Of course they did, it's the most elegant solution to an ongoing problem of slightly acidic human sweat and oils...
    - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

    • @Sewstine
      @Sewstine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much Cathy! So I usually add about 3-5% to the length because of the distortion. But it’s Sooooo hard to predict. But yes - I make it about 2-3” longer and then cut down what I don’t need. Good luck!!!!

    • @stevezytveld6585
      @stevezytveld6585 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sewstine Thanks! Yeah, I was guessing 2-5" extra fabric (length & width). The fish are going to be hand embroidered because that just seems simpler than trying to free-hand-quilt them on the machine. The water will be entirely by free-hand. That part I'm looking forward to playing with. It all seems relatively simple in my head. But I have some chocolate on standby... because... I'll be experimenting with the final fabric... samples will only get me so far, I'm afraid.
      Thanks again!

    I’m so envious you have an embroidery machine …I would do a hand embroidery but imagine how long that would take me. Wonderful piece you’ve made; can’t wait to see the final product. I’m working on a Summer weight stripped cotton woven fabric similar to the cut of your jacket. It’s a light tan background with golden camel and navy blue colored stripes of varying thickness. I chose a light weight navy woven wool with extreme basket inter woven pattern for the border of the coat and will follow with waistcoat and breaches in the same. I only have the patience to hand embroider the front of the waistcoat ( will do Navy silk on the Navy wool ) but as this is more of an American 1790’s style they were less flamboyant & I might get away with it. Thanks for your video and putting me in contact with Black Snail Patterns. It’s all very helpful.

    Just curious if you were to wear your 18th Century stays underneath if it might help to flattern the natural chest and eliminate the need for bust darts?

    Nice piece you made! I very much like that you set the sleeves in with ease on top to make the slim 18th century shoulders work. And the darts are a smart idea to make this men´s coat work on a female figure. As there isn't more so far, I don´t know if you did it but the padding in the collar bone area could also be adapted to help the shape along. And using buckram is a very good thing. While one could use modern interfacing, it never really looks or drapes like the historical variant.
    Now a few things I noticed. It´s not meant to be negative but something to watch out for in the future. The pocket´s on you coat appear to be quite high, a lot higher than typical. In general the pockets were situated surprisingly low, a good bit below the actual waist, creating a "false waistline" making the body look longer/taller. A solution to work around that in embroidering and maybe circumvent any issues in fit could be to follow the way the embroidery was done historically. Not in one piece as with this coat, but in two pieces, often with the embroidery around the pocket opening as another separate part, all of which would be pieced together later into the front panel. This was done historically as most embroidery was not done bespoke, but in a "pre-made" embroidery panel that would be cut up and fitted to a person. And this would not only give a lot more tolerance for your embroidery and the ability to change things after it is done, but also make it easier as it is two or three pieces, not one very large one.
    The lining is another one. No fault there at all, it´s down to a lot of outdated/wrong information still being out there, even in professional sources. Coats and waistcoats would not be lined in linen, at least fully, especially those like the one you made. The majority of the lining would be either some kind of worsted (wool often "shalloon") or some form of silk. This would be everywhere the lining would become visible while wearing it. The back without the skirt/flaps and the sleeves would be lined in some form of unbleached linen, for the practical function and because it was much cheaper.

      Although I get using linen there, because getting a wool or fitting silk nowadays that works for lining is really, really hard.
