I've done some tempera on wood painting in the eastern orthodox christian tradition when I was about his age. It doesn't take a lot of talent to learn to do it (it does to make a masterpiece though 😬). But it does take love. We mixed our own paints from powders. I don't do it anymore but it made me appreciate our tradition more. Espeically how the understanding of the world was conveyed thought things like perspective, details, colors... It is wonderful to see how some things are very similar since the tools are similar and then we are doing completely different things with them. I am so happy he can experience it. If you get a chance, go for it. 🙂
