New valve guidelines provide information about management of patients with heart valve disease including when to operate, TAVR (TAVI); valve surgery; valve choice, valve repair, surgical approach, and how the guidelines address the aorta and the tricuspid valve.
Dr. Lars Svensson, Chairman, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute and Dr. Marc Gillinov, Department Chairman, Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery provide their take on the new guidelines.

I had a tricuspid valve with significnt regurgitation, replaced by a cow valve in 2015. Days after surgery I had what I think now was a siezure. Later an mri showed a stroke on the right side of my brain in the iscemic core.

So how did you manage the stroke?

@@maxhavels527 I’m right handed and my strokes were all right side so I had little if any physical issues. The worst was right frontal lobe and that made me more ADD and less likely to filter my speach.

@@res00xua so the ischemic core you're talking about came from valve replacement or it was a pre existing condition which remained undiagnosed?

@@maxhavels527 it is not possible to know exactly when I had my stroke. My wife noticed behavior changes and an MRI was ordered with contrast. This showed the damage to my right frontal lobe. We have no proof of when the damage occurred. My neurologist said that my verbal skills were so far above average it was not very noticeable. Note it took over 3 months ti get a neurological appointment after the MRI. I have been taking eliquist for the last few years although I have never seen an ekg with afib. I am wearing a heart monitor for weeks to get some proof.
