Good thinking, Xing! Your response was direct, discreet, and diplomatic. Fortunately, the interviewer caught on right way that you were subtly telling him that he shouldn't have asked that question in order to find out whether you would really be committed to staying with the company long-term. And it was very classy of him to apologize up front for having asked it!

@@MKPiatkowski I thought about that, but his expression and reaction to the way she subtly called him out on it suggests that he didn't ask that question with the idea of testing her. The reason that question gets asked (even though it's a legal no-no both in the Netherlands and the US) is that, as Bart pointed out, companies like to know that a candidate will stick with the company long-term instead of bailing after just a couple of years, even if it's just to start a family. From the company's point of view, why should it invest in training a new employee who's not going to stick around long enough to provide the company with a substantial return on its investment?

Hoi Bart en Kersten, Jullie online grammatica cursus is absolute geweldig, Ik ben heel tevreden met hem. Ik vind dat Nederlands een super moeilijk taal is, maar met jullie cursus ik heb een beetje van hoop gevonden dat het Nederlands eigenlijk mogelijk te leren is. Ja, als jullie kunnen zien, ik ben bezig met de laagste niveau nog...:).
The grammar course these guys have put together is absolutely brilliant, using clear and precise explanations of the many rules (and all the exceptions) your going to challenged with when learning the, seemingly random, Dutch language:). Their material is almost incomparably easier to follow than the semi-official NT2 texts. So if your struggling with the lack of structure and explanations of grammar rules in the official courses, Id recommend giving this one a go.
