    I really liked this spot. For a while I thought it would be my favorite 12'+ South Shore spot (I was a North Shore resident). I had some huge sized left tubes here a few times in different sessions but the reality of it was the high probability of slamming into the high reef areas at big swell size that could end your experience. I'd rank it up there with Outside Alligator Rock on the North Shore for the deadly factor. If you make the drop and the wave, all is good but if you don't, you get a violent roll on the reef or get the wind knocked out of you or get a concussion that you may never wake up from. For me it was learning by experience but for others please listen and learn that it's not a practical risk to take. Oh yes, and the sharks. Both spots have big Tiger Sharks. But one season on the North Shore, after I had bounced off the reef at huge Outside Alligator Rock and had the wind knocked out of me underwater, I came back in the summer to try to understand the bottom. I had been snorkeling around alone way outside and I met a Tiger Shark that could have taken me whole in one bite. It circled me 1/3 way and around and then disappeared for awhile. Then I sensed a pulsing sound from below and looked and saw the shark charging me from the deep. I had some survival training for responding to wild animals that taught me to make myself seem extra large by jumping and flailing my legs and my arms straight up while making the loudest sounds that I could. I did that in the water as best as I could and closed my eyes. I felt like a guy stranded standing on a highway lane that was just about to be struck by a big truck. I counted now.., then 2.5 seconds later... now, and then as I opened my eyes, I felt a huge pressure wave blast from the shark's tail as it was doing a 180 and I saw the shark swimming back down in the same direction it had charged from. I never saw the shark again but I had the terror of having to swim in feeling that my whole life was hanging on a very thin thread.

      Wow! That’s a scary shark story. Your quick thinking response probably saved your life. Thanks for sharing.

    I seen one of the biggest tiger sharks in my whole life surface at this place. Luckily we didnt jump in yet. Needless to say we went to the opposite side of the island after that.

      There used to be a big tiger shark named "Bruce" that showed up there semi regularly and cleared the lineup. It never did anything to anyone but it wasn't hiding either

      @@nickc3856 Funny Nick, like the one at Sunset Beach that had had it's dorsal fin sawed off at some point in it's life. We called it "The Manager" since he could clear out the line up as well and it liked to swim underneath of us. Just brushing the bottoms of our feet. Big one too.

    The waves dont look.that good and how do they get back in?

  • @larryjohnny

    is that the only access? did they end up catching something nice? How did they get out? same way they got in? looks too difficult but nice footage...

    What are they paddling out to? Didn’t see one rideable wave.

      They waited for the set to pass to enter the water in between sets. The video is about the entry, they timed it perfectly and are paddling into the lineup. When the lineup is that far away from the wall, it’s a big day. To jfooj, the photographer here, I agree with others that it’s nice to see the art of the entry on a big day, the stuff around the surfing, as one commenter put it. Nice video. Mahalo.

  • @jfooj
    @jfooj  12 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There is an easy exit a few hundred yards toward the shore at a spot called "Pillars". Otherwise you must time the sets and climb back up the wall.

    @silversurfer100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If that's how you get out, how do you get back in?

    • @jfooj
      @jfooj  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There's a rope that you can use if you want to time it. On a big day like this its pretty sketchy. Or you can paddle in a couple hundred yards and get out at pillars.

    there are other ways to get in and out of this spot, all sketchy but that shows the versitility of hawaiian surfers. honestly one of my favorite spots. the sketchyness does veer me away because some days i don't feel like going thru the troubles of getting in and out. but surviving a session at china walls fills my life with stoke. shoots

    Relatively speaking "entering at China Walls" is the easy part....
    Tring to get out again.....different story.
    Also, I would advise surfers not to leash-up until they have transisiton into water!
