      I just don’t understand how Harper gets so mad about that, especially in the 3rd inning, I think it’s the one thing I don’t grasp about him, it’s one thing to fight the umpire about the strike zone the entire night but for a checked swing called strike/out I feel like Harper has to be more disciplined there and not take that ejection.
      I don’t like the call, Jomboy even shows the previous check swing upheld call by AH and they look super similar, it doesn’t seem Harper is ever attempting to go for the ball it more so seems he’s middle of the plate on each and doesn’t want them.

Yes, he works this at bat hard but he needs to choose his battles better since he already has a bad repour with the umps. This game has no implications this late in the season after Phillies clinching a top wild card spot. In the end, the true issue is the umpire, Angel Hernandez. THIS is yet another reason he is not chosen to officiate games in the World Series, yet he sues on racial discrimination. The union needs to adjust because this ump should not be umpiring at the major league level. Not sure what else it would it would take to get him out. His history goes beyond infamy.

  • @mulgrum
    @mulgrum 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I agree that the call was wrong and the ejection was correct. My continuing problem with this rule is that the vague, subjective (perhaps holistic) standard applied by the plate umpire changes to a single concrete and objective standard if there is an appeal. The rule allows the plate umpire to use whatever criteria they want, such that the plate umpire could determine that, based on other factors, there is no swing even if the barrel breaks the plane. But if the call is “no swing” and there is an appeal, the sole criteria becomes breaking the plane - after all, what other piece of information could the base umpire have that the plate umpire didn’t have? I’m not sure what the rule should be - perhaps it’s a strike if the bat breaks the plane unless it’s being pulled back before the arrival of the ball, perhaps not - but surely the same rule should apply to the initial call and the appeal?

    • @whodoyoudancefor
      @whodoyoudancefor 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed, as far as current interpretation goes.
      But perhaps we should step back and rethink the rule entirely. If we want more action on the basepaths, perhaps instead of focusing on whether the batter intended to strike at the ball we should be considering whether his intent was not to strike at the ball. Could not any attempt to check one's swing indicate conclusively that the batter at that point was NOT trying to hit the ball?
      And why do we allow a catcher to appeal if the home plate umpire hasn't called it a strike? Why not reverse it and only allow the batter to appeal?

      You have to start a swing before you can check it. Batters want to be able to start a swing, get halfway through, change their mind and then stop and get away with it. Personally I think umpires are too lenient on check swings in the first place. 40 seconds into this video you can see two examples of a batter not swing at all, the bat doesn't move off the shoulder much at all, it doesn't go near the strike zone.. then later he swings, stops halfway through with the bat in the middle of the strike zone and somehow it's not an attempt at a swing?@@whodoyoudancefor

      Umpiring is not an easy craft. Those who have umpired at the HS level and beyond know this. Those who have never umpired have no clue the difficulty. The check swing is one of the harder calls to get right. Umpires do not have the luxury of watching it multiple times in slo mo.
      MLB should make check swings challangable for both the batter and defensive team. If we had a replay here on this atrociously bad call by Angel, this entire Sheet show could have been avoided. I bet the umpire at 2nd base winced when Angel banged him out. Yikes

    So. I hate Bryce Harper's guts. He's a good player, a fantastic player really. Lots of talent, and when he manages to reel things in and stop throwing toddler-style temper tantrums he's a real asset to his team. That being said, I agree with him getting angry about that call, Angel Hernandez needs a damned seeing eye dog ffs. Actually Angel Hernandez needs to join Joe West in retirement, they were always 1 and 2 in "Worst Umpire On The Diamond" for decades. Harper has every right to be angry. But getting tossed? That's not helping his team and that's why I haven't liked the guy - despite the overload of talent he has - from his first day in the majors. He can't control his stupid temper and gets himself tossed and that's not helping his team. If he really cared about his team, he'd stop that childish shit and just let it go - he'll have another at bat later. Unless of course he gets tossed.

    I really think the rule book for checked swings should go into detail and rewrite it. I remember the whole foul line thing and that's what many people remember and go by as how far the swing occurs in motion. Not sure if MLB umpires or umpires in general follow that rule still, but I think it should make it into the rule book. It's a grey rule that has no explanation or interpretation. That's like saying "Ball must be thrown to batter in a timely manner", however it specifies no time limit and leaves umpire judgement to the call which would be another grey rule with no explanation or interpretation. I've never umpired but I was a player in school for a decade, and I think both sides have to see that emotions happen. Most of the time these players get fired up that it isn't personal against the ump's character, only the call. It doesn't mean they should be berated or belittled, but we're all human as well. Anger/frustration is an emotion we feel. You see these equipment violation ejections like the one before and it's just us as humans. We feel frustrated when told we failed something, and we feel frustrated especially when told we failed and it was out of our control. Striking out is a failure when at bat and that's okay. Missing a call is a failure and that's okay. Human errors create emotions in sports. But again, that doesn't mean it's okay to belittle the umpire. Just an explanation that I don't see brought up a lot.

  • @jamesrichardson381
    @jamesrichardson381 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't know why anyone would be confused by this. For what I was taught and have always seen be the case is use the parallel front of the plate as the guide. If the bat goes past is it is a swing. If they stop it before lining up with that then it's not a swing. So obviously that one was not a swing. At least that screw up by the ump makes a little bit of sense as opposed to what happened last night between the phillies and braves when the home plate ump made the single worst ball/strike call i have ever seen and maybe in history to screw Max Fried. He threw a fastball that was damn near right in the middle of the strikezone. How an ump screwed that up is beyond me. He's lucky the Braves have the leagues best offense likely again and they bailed him out after the call allowed the inning to continue and the Phillies to score 3 runs.
