The amazing thing is that he wrote and composed this at age 21.
Love how Floor teases and hypes the crowd in the beginning, it shows she has them wrapped around her pinky. Musically speaking, what else can I say? Perfection. Love the brief synth solo, it reminded me of a magical rain of stars, love Emppu, Marko and Kai synchronization.
PS: Floor used to be (and I think still is) heeeavily criticized for not singing this song EXACTLY like Tarja did in the past. Is like she's forbidden to touch the older NW songs, and just can't add her own flavour to them, without someone getting tickled the wrong way.
This song in particular, together with Gethsemane, for ME, I still prefer Tarja's version, but there are a lot of the olders that Floor "owned", and are better. See, I'm saying this is a bad version, but it's just preference I guess?.. I can't explain why..
To see Emppu go up to Tuomas and standing there next to him and play his guitar and Tuomas his keyboard... it's like looking back in time hearing this song....not taking anything away from the others band members though.

Yup, at 3:17 it's a subtle shift, but at 4:01 Floor does a gorgeous flip & back. Very difficult but she can pull it off because of her "modified classical" mode. It's head-dominant but still there's a connection. Improved agility/diction is the reward here, which is also the reason why Floor does the flip into chest dominant & back: she has no interest in singing the part, she wants to tell the story.
At this legendary Tampere concert, Floor was at the peak of her vocal mastery. That version of Ghost Love Score she delivered there and especially the "grand finale" on the catwalk.. pure word painting masterclass. Cheers! 🤘
I think it's more like her "Tarja emulation voice". The song is a bit of fan service for the older Finnish listeners, maybe.
@@Zuron Not really. It's her modified classical mode from her After Forever/Revamp days. Nothing to do with emulating NW's first songster. The challenge here is to not give in to "technical" singing at this tempo but keep paying attention to phrasing and word colouring. Things Tarja simply couldn't do in her early days.
It's true that Floor's tehcnique is far superior to what Tarja had back in the day. But there are a couple of performances where she is emulating, Kinslayer from Wacken and this one being perhaps the most obvious. She could put in her own spin and improve these songs, but didn't do it. Maybe because she just hadn't the time to practice those very much, so the best she could do is reproduce the original. But I like to think that it's done on purpose to evoke nostalgia.@@BrendonChase_2015
I don't know about all that, but I'm just going by what she sounds like in this performance. There's another one where I thought the same (She Is My Sin at Wacken).
Floor has superior technique compared to Tarja back in the day, and I think she is able to improve most of the songs by putting the Floor spin on things. In these cases she didn't do it.
It could be just because she didn't have that much time to practice, and so went for a reproduction, but I like to think it was done on purpose to invoke nostalgia.

Tuomas was supposed to study biology in university when he wrote this and hole Oceanborn album. He said he didn't get many study points that winter. But hey he got Nightwish breaktrough album.
And I can tell I was blown away 1998 when I first time put Oceanborn album to CD player and this first song of album did play out. This was something else back then even in Finland were metal was almoust mainstream back then.
This is an old NW song, written by Tuomas at the age of 18 or so. I think they added it to the setlist of this tour as the subject fits the last 2 albums of the band: the universe, earth, evolution and us (the 2024 album will have the same theme).
Tragedienne of heavens is the earth (as it is full of tragedies, evolution being the biggest non stop tragedy)
Watching the eyes of the night (the stars)
Sailing the virgin oceans (earth sailing through empty space)
A Planetride for Mother and Child (earth and moon)
Tuomas knows something about the history of astronomy: "Following the pages of Almagest"
(Wikipedia :-) The Almagest is a 2nd-century Greek-language mathematical and astronomical treatise on the apparent motions of the stars and planetary paths, written by Claudius Ptolemy (c. AD 100 - c. 170). One of the most influential scientific texts in history.
Floor's Power is undeniable.
And this concert was very special for Floor ( Her Parents where there ❤).
The meaning of the song appears to be a poetic comparison between the Earth drifting through space and the way an ancient mariners would use the stars for navigation, and the music adds the proper epic drama of the process. Clarifying some of the metaphors, the "third vagrant" is the Earth as it is the third planet from the Sun, the "mother and child" are the Earth and Moon, "hydrogen lakes" describes both the fact that water is partially hydrogen, and that the space in our solar system is mostly hydrogen, "ambrosial merry-go-round" refers to the forever orbiting of the planet.

Hi Eric. Oh yes, Floor is master of thr microphone - you can see it all the time.
Listen also to Sacrament of Wilderness, as I'm pretty sure there is a riff/motif that is the same in both.
Emppu loves this one:

Personally I put Kai and Jukka up there with Phil C as a drummer, and maybe Bonham is there too.
(Oddly, Phil says one of his top 5 drummers is Ringo Starr😮)
Perfect song to highlight every member of the band. You can see how happy Tuomas is to be playing a song again that he was afraid would never be part of their setlist again...and the reason is Floor. She has allowed him to shine again, and go in directions he wanted to go. This next album should be very interesting. Never know how the fans are going to take it. Human Nature to the next level? Exciting!!

Hi Eric.
I understand your point about the spot on the mic. As a former musician myself, I had my share of compression usage and as I can see their microphone lines are set to a very high compression level.
And for good reason, the volume of everything coming from that stage is enought to cause major feedback from the mics if they don't have compression.
Good example....
On "Romanticide", when they go into the switch after the 2nd chorus which came after the lead solo, Emppu purposely let's the strings on his guitar ring out and to top it off, he heads over to his amp and wipes his face while the strings are still vibrating in front of the amp, causing feedback.
Whoever came up with the idea to do that at that moment is absolutely genius!
But yes, compression on the mics is great on big shows like this.

Good on you man for picking up the little changes from operatic voice to normal mix. Really cool. I always think of this vocal performance as Floor's ode to Tarja, because that is the way she would sing it.
I came to NW in the Floor era, so I love seeing the call backs to the band from before my introduction. Old to new with re interpretation is always interesting

As far as my old brain remembers, it was the wish of Tuomas for that song being on that setlist.
May be I am wrong, but professor Valtte surely knows more about.......
My understanding is that Floor wanted to add Sleeping Sun to the setlist so the deal Tuomas made with Floor was that he got to add Stargazer. So they each got to add a song they loved!

I discovered Nightwish about 18 months ago and it has been amazing. I have spent the last couple of weeks actively checking out other bands in this genre. And it has been lacking. There are a lot on very talented vocalists, keyboard, Bass and guitar players, but it just does not click. After thinking about I have found the clue. The other bands perform metal songs in a symphonic style. Nightwish performs symphonic music in a metal style. It's all Tuomas and his style. No one can imitate that.

I try not to rank musicians. Neil was perfect for what he was doing, and the same can be said about Kai. This is why we know them. I'm sure each is more than capable to handle the other's work, but that work would lose the uniqueness of the original.

Hi Eric, you Transylvanian friends reporting... I will not make a comment on another beautiful and constructive reaction of yours, it goes without saying, Did you notice the "mother and child" holding hands when Floor was announcing the title of the song off the setlist? And did you hear the verse in the chorus "a planetride for mother and child"? I think that was the doing of Tuomas directing the cameraman remotely, even before the show started. He knew well before the show that there will be a mother and child in the crowd who should be recorded for this performance. Imagine the shock in the post-production people when they saw exactly that. But I wanted something else with my comment, just wondered off for a second here. You might remember from my previous comment that I am a concert organist, and simultaneously I love symphonic metal music as well, mainly because the composers who created baroque, would be the greatest metal musicians of our days. Just remember how many times you've hears Vivaldi's 4 seasons on electric guitar, or Bach's Toccata and Fugue on similar instruments (also features in Nightwish's "the greatest show on earth"). Now, there are musicians who have the capability to live in both worlds, both classical and metal (mostly symphonic, but please forgive our nature, please). Such a wonderful musician is BabySaster. I drop this recommendation heavy-heartidly, because I am not member of discord, patreon, or any of those prime places, but I am 200% sure that you might love this package. This song is amazing but the one thing that stands out is Kai . Why off the nightwish set list? Annette. Imaginaerum is, to me the best NW album, and Annette was underappreciated. BUT Annette and operatic, no no, it took Floor to bring this back to life.
I have been subscribed for a while now, and I did like, but to me this is not symphonic metal but power metal. At the time Tuomas was heavily influenced by Stratovarius. Why I don't recognize it as symphonic? Simple. No orchestra. No movements. Just having a singer who can fake an operatic voice won't make it symphonic. As a matter of fact, most symphonies don't even have vocals.
This is not to dis Floor. Since 2015 I have easily dropped 20k-30k on seeing Nightwish live in half a dozen countries in three continents. There is no other band I would have done this for, and that is at least partially because of Floor.
I am going to drop 10k on Epica later this year in Amsterdam and Mexico City, but a lot of that number is business class and jet lag.
You should definitely check Tarja singing this in Buenos Aires 2011 ( th-cam.com/video/QKHfRSaOK88/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=earMUSIC ) ! It's probably one of my all-time favorite live versions of this! The energy is INSANE!
