From Reuters: “The rental market in Rome has tightened significantly due to landlords converting long-term rentals into short-term units in anticipation of the 2025 Roman Catholic Holy Year, expected to attract around 32 million tourists. This shift has led to a 33% increase in monthly rental rates over the past year, making central Rome increasingly unaffordable for many locals.” In 2024 the average rent for all of Rome was about €1500 / mth with central Rome being around €2300. In Rome, there are over 25’000 short term rental properties, an incredible number. No wonder there is a long term rental shortage. Of the 25,000+ at least 8000 units are thought to be owned by small businesses or corporations. (Estimated at around 30%)
It's a big business and it always has been... In Rome a lot of people work and survive thanks to the Vatican, job related... It reminds me of when Taylor Swift, the singer, was causing inflation wherever she had a concert... Higher inflation, higher GDP even in front of less PPI, power purchase index, that's how we are far from recession in Italy...
Some more statistics: in a normal year, Rome receives about 10 million foreign visitors and about 5 million domestic tourists. Foreigners usually stay 3 nights and Italians stay 2 nights (weekend trips to Rome?). In 2025, this number is expected to more than double to 32 million. Just announcing a Jubilee out of the blue does suggest an economic motive. Not just benefiting Rome and the Church, but benefiting all of Italy with a big influx of foreign money. This comes at a time when European economic engines are faltering. Germany and France in particular are looking at bad times in 2025. The UK, while not part of the EU, is still part of Europe and they may be in worse shape than the EU. A Jubilee could help Italy weather the storm better than its neighbors.
Yes, As you said it looks like the tourism in Rome is going to be 3 times higher than normal. Obviously this will give a boost to the Italian economy... Could be 1% more than usual, Italian growth has been very bad in the last 30 years, nearly no growth... But Italy is a particular country, particularly in the meaning that things keep going on independently by the official numbers... Generally in Europe things are not as good as you said France and Germany are not doing well... If the EU is not changing strategy I won't see a great future... That's why I choose here in the south... More detached from the general economy, in the good and in the bad
Very interesting video , I didn’t know about the jubilee but it reminded me of the expo in Milano that I visited in its last week. And as you mentioned the housing or hotel accommodation were indeed expensive but I used Airbnb for the first time and I rented a condo walking distance from the condo that was excellent 🌹
Ciao Antonio. A lot of BnBs are owned by corporations. The Church probably owns a lot of properties in and around Rome. The Church must need money. Being flip aside, anyone with a hospitality based business will be very happy that the Pope announced a jubilee and the Italian Tourist lobby and Tourism board must be very happy.
The Catholic Church has been haemorrhaging money for a long time, particularly since the English Reformation and French Revolution when her lands were confiscated. The FIRST loan the Catholic Church received from the Rothchilds was in 1832. Who owns the Vatican?
Thanks Antonio, I am planning to visit Italy in 2025 to visit my Parents' home town,. It is not Rome! I think I may give Rome a miss this time. I am enjoying your Channel. Hope you had a great Christmas and wishing you a Happy new year.
