My heart was stolen a long time ago by Martine van Hamel, so I can't say Gelsey is better, but many of her qualities are those I admire in these earlier clips: the way she floats through his hands, the way she's always moving even when she's still, the way she fills all the music, the way she *lives* the music. One of those pas de deux where you do not think about steps and poses, but the focus is completely on the movement quality and the atmosphere. Very nice and still fresh!
Of all the people alive today, Gelsey Kirkland is THE one I would love to spend an hour with. What artistry and determination. I wonder if she knows how much loved and admired she is. How hard she worked, how much she went through, to give us such gifts. Thanks for posting.

Gelsey and Jacques in Midsummer Night's Dream Divertissment. She does remind me of the fairies in this pas de duex. Her lightness and precision. I would love to have seen her do Ashton's version of this ballet.
The most beautiful performance of this ravishing choreography I've ever seen, besides that of Farrell and Martins. It's both thrilling and painful to see Kirkland dancing here with freedom and seeming joy at the height of her youthful powers, and then to think of what happened to her after she left NYCB.
Such elegance and lightness and ease of motion! And she looks healthy here - not skeletal as was the case later. Part of me thinks Balanchine is burning in hell for the suffering he caused in pursuit of his 'ideal.'
