  • There are 2 Mafias in the Indian Startup Ecosystem…
The US was said to have a PayPal mafia back in the day where the key folks from the founding team of PayPal would end up founding Tesla, LinkedIn, TH-cam and Yelp.
Similarly, it was believed that in India, there’s been a Flipkart mafia, where the founding members ended up setting up massive companies subsequently like PhonePe, CultFit, Groww, Udaan and Slice.
But if you genuinely look out today…
There are two groups that actually work as Mafias…
The alumni of these two companies have decided that if anyone exits these companies to start a startup, the alums will come together to fund his first round so that the chance of failure is drastically reduced.
They’ll come together to open doors for each other in such a way because they know that if any of their alumni fail to raise money or fail in business, it may tarnish the brand that their former employer lends to them.
And these two mafias are McKinsey and HUL.
There’s no wonder HUL is called the CEO factory and ex McKinsey folks are ready to fund founders from the firm to collectively make huge money from such deals too.
I won’t name the startups, but look around in your network and you’ll see it yourself.

Valid point. This exists in the top B-schools. Any crappy idea is funded by the "network". Those outside that loop find it a herculean task raising even small amounts.
