    I was a fireman for 10 years, we did something we called "walking the line" that meant after we were done fighting the fire we'd have to drain the hoses so they didn't freeze on the truck, so we'd stretch them out, and heel to toe on each hose from one end to the other, that would remove about 80% of the water making it much easier to drain as we roll them back up. As far as water hoses goes, if you don't want to spend money on a gadget, simply walk down the hose with it over your shoulder. If you do this on a spool you HAVE to go slowly or it won't all drain out, over the shoulder is faster and helps prevent it from freezing to the ground. FYI collapsible hoses do NOT drain, ever. Unless you hang them up for their full length there's too many folds in them. We've had 3 different brands, all 3 froze and broke open.

    I agree with just rolling the hose or walking the hose to drain the water out or pulling it up a hillside to drain it out.
    Actually you wouldn't even have to disconnect the hose, just use a hose splitter on the hydrant
    that gives you 2 faucets.
    Connect the hose to one faucet and use the other faucet as a bleeder, and keep that closed while you're using the hose.
    When you go to drain the hose open both faucets and walk the hose out or roll the hose as you're doing it.
    By walking the hose I mean to just hold on to the hose and keep it elevated about 2 or 3 feet off the ground as you're walking the length of the hose to drain the water out of it. And by doing it this way you are also draining the water out of the hydrant.
    And when you want to use that hydrant again just turn it on and turn off the other unused faucet and use the hose as you normally would.
    Just always remember to shut off the hydrants in the winter time and leave the bleeders open.

    You need to use the tools you already have. We always would store our yard lines for the stuff around the small side of the farm in the chicken coop. All of our chicken coops had infrared lights to help out chickens. Which meant a good built coop is always above 32. We built a hose roller on a swing door to allow easy use up high in the coop. We were gaining two things. Keeping it high in the warmest air and away from all the chickens so they wouldn’t get the hose dirty. My mom has a downhill slope out the back of the barn. She always just disconnected the hose from the spigot and lay it out straight on the downhill

  • @oxboustrophe1392
    @oxboustrophe1392 ปีที่แล้ว

    You just disconnect the hose on both ends and go from one end to the other with it above your head, You do not roll it up - leave it in place. You roll it up you'll have to take it inside to get it to unroll if it's really cold, and sometimes the hose will break. I've done it this way for years. If there's a problem you bring some hot water to pour on the hose or you can just open the hydrant and run that water over the hose. Bend the hose as little as possible.

    Good tip, We use a heated water hose, power come from 2 deep cycle battery charged by wind n solar. Another thing we use is in pipe water heater keeps water warm enough to keep from freezing.

    Could just learn to walk out a hose. I use a lot of hose at work. Sometimes up to 2000 feet of it in total, most of such being 1.5" firehose. Some 5/8 and 3/4 garden hose. Disconnect both ends, lift one and and walk while lifting the hose.

    You can also use an air compressor if you have one. I built my own snow maker and when I’m done I use the compressor to blow out all the water hoses.

    One if you do not do it right it will not get all the water out of the hose water will Not fight the forces of gravity. two Why not just pick it up and walk it out,for sure you'll get all the water out that way.start at one end and walk it out,takes a sec,shur fire,and free.

    I made a valve that hooks to my compressor and screws onto the hose. It take seconds to clear the hose. Just don't stand close to the far end. The hose whips around pretty good.

  • @JasonW.

    The expanding poly hoses shrink down to remove most of the water, and what's left makes ice that isn't much issue when you use it again and it expands.
    Just remember to remove hose from both sides.

    That's a lot quicker and easier to just use the air nozzle on your air compressor blast 150 psi through that it'll clear it out really quick

    We would just stretch the house up the hill next to the barn. The water drains its self and is close to the horses when needed again. No extra equipment needed. 🤠👍

      That's the only thing I do too. I don't know why people make this so hard. It's not like you have to get every drop of water out. If a little water is still in the hose it immediately will melt when you plug it back to the hydrant

  • @davidmelius7292
    @davidmelius7292 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not enough CFM but your on the right track. As long as the water from the frost free doesn’t have a ice block the warm well water will help clear the hose. If its neg 20f make sure you run the frost free for a while or it will freeze before it drains back. Warm well water needs to heat that cold pipe some.

    Careful, the moisture in the air (from the compressor) will still have some moisture in it… shouldn’t cause you you to big of a problem.
    We used to drain the entire air system from multiple low points on my Service Rig every night during the winter. We would also pour some Safe-T-Brake into the system as well as the alcohol would further help prevent the lines from freezing

  • @brianpinkey676
    @brianpinkey676 ปีที่แล้ว

    If your frost free hydrant is installed correctly it'll drain the hose for you if you leave it connected. I filled my horses large troth, and it was empty the next day because I left the hose in there after turning the hydrant off.

    if you have chainlink you can put it into the holes, keeping the hose straight with one end lower along the fence so it drains, you can also just have a bucket in your house with a hose in it and take it out with you when you need it.

    If want to drain and leave the hose extended as it is, I detach the hose from the hydrant and simple lift the hose and walk along side the hose, letting the hose slide along your hand to it's end. Gravity does the rest.

    Cheaper and easier way
    1. Have a slope, such as a hill, that can have the hose be stretched full length down hill.
    2. Have one end at the bottom of the hill, the other at the top.
    3. Go inside and warm up.
    4. Go back and store the hose.
    5. Don't spend money on something you don't need but a couple of minutes out of a year.

    The way to do this without buying an expensive gadget is to walk the length of your hose, raising it up as you go. Water flows downhill, the hose doesn't need to be empty, just empty enough that you wont risk an overpressure event.
    Might pick up and shake the spool's fitting though, water loves bursting those sorts of fittings.

  • @wsinbad1356
    @wsinbad1356 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best trick I ever used was to get one of those expanding hoses that shrink after you turn off the water. Much of the water stays in the hose and freezes but so what when the water turns on it expands and the water rushes around the ice and within minutes the warmer water will melt the ice and the hose will run full blast, then shrink again once the water is turned off.

  • @colleens1878
    @colleens1878 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's nifty
    We would nail an upside down horse shoe up high near the hose so after watering disconnect the hose and pull it over the horse shoe
    Gravity would do the draining
    As long as they don't freeze its a good thing
