  • Leamington when it was a very nice town, loads of classy shops on a very busy Parade
with smartly dressed folk who DIDN'T look as if they'd just rolled out nof bed.
Just the opposite of todays scene.....sometimes I'm sure a cannon could be fired up
    The Parade without hitting anything.

I was born in Warnford General on Nov 7th 1952 @ least 10 weeks premature and not expected to survive the night, yet, due to the care and diligence of the staff, here I am still 68 years later.

It's wonderful to look back to the Good Days of Royal Leamington Spa. How I wish the Town Centre was like that today.

I had to use the bus to get back to Bishops Tachbrook from Coventry, so arrived at Pool Meadow feeling overwhelmed and lost, but couldn't believe it, there was a bus in Coventry with 'Bishops Tachbrook' as the destination, i was sure it was going to be at least 2 buses, lots of wating around and walking around to the relevant stops, but there it was and it was a double decker!

I could have been on any of those buses. Used to catch them all regularly.

Thanks for sharing your films on here Ken. Seeing these street scenes takes me back when I was a child growing up in the sixties, happy times for me. I started using cine when I was 15 years old. That was in the early seventies, wish I had of taken trouble to film street scenes like this. Cine is so much better than VHS stuff that I took in the nineties. Last time I used cine was in 2002 and that was to film my niece's wedding. Cine keeps better than VHS tapes too.

Thankyou Rusty, I'm pleased it brought back memories and I'm very chuffed you think cine is so much better than Video...I couldn't agree more. I only wish I'd filmed more especially locally.

Man, the hustle and bustle of the parade is something else. Do you know why it was decided that the parade should be closed to road traffic ? Seems so much quieter now

The parade isn’t usually closed to road traffic. It’s closed at the moment because of covid as it allows pedestrians to give each other a wide birth

the ugly over development and out of town centre retail parks and general parking catastrophe and general incompetence of the councils and authorities has destroyed the town economically, i think all those businesses paying all those rates and taxes have been betrayed. The town is sterile now, busy is viewed as bad. Maybe we just don't realise what we had until it is gone and everything just looks so much more beautiful back then, even the cars all look superb.

a shame such lovely footage gets ruined reading a comment like this.from ken wilkins. i lived in leamington in the 70's and earlu 80's. it was always the town where time stood still. it also got hammered by thatcher. went back there last year and it had changed so much for the better.

Parking both sides of the road , no need to park on the path.

Yes Kevan and have you noticed how easily the traffic and especially the Midland Red buses travelled without any fuss down The Parade.

Actually it is nicer now than it was then. The shops are far, far more up market these days - the people, including the young, are much better dressed and the it is far safer to walk the streets these days than it used to be. I should know - I live in Leamington Spa. Anyone who says otherwise haven't been there recently.

You taking drugs?, its the opposite of what you say. Leamington is going down hill fast. The Leamington town football club will be called Leamington City soon.

i agree bill,i'm from south town there and the violence all round the town was horrendous.they always seemed to find the money to jazz uptown but cross the river and it was totally neglected, apart from a multi-million pound (pffft) facelift, which was just a crappy dfs or something hidden behind St Peters

I disagree with the uploader.I was working in Leamington Spa last month and thought it was a wonderful place. So many impressive Georgian buildings(i think they're Georgian,I'm by no means an expert)to admire,it almost felt like being in a time capsule particularly with Cov just up the road.
Maybe its not as great as the 60's🤷‍♂ but it's still looks a much better place to live than the majority of towns and cities in the UK.
