Taking an Electric Wheelchair on rides in Disneyland Paris

  • Going on holiday with an electric wheelchair and equipment such as a portable commode and hoist can be cumbersome and stressful. In this video we outline how we travelled from Canterbury in the UK to Disneyland Paris in France for a family holiday.
We boarded the Eurostar in Ebbsfleet , a special wheelchair ramp was provided which allowed Andrew in his All Terrain mid-wheel drive Electric wheelchair (A Frontier V6 from Magic Mobility) to board the train , Andrew's carer Nicolas pushed the portable hoist onto the train which was stored in the carriage next to Andrew's seat. The hoist which is an Oxford Journey folds up for easy travelling , however it wasn't required to fold up to get onto the train.
Andrew's portable commode also folds up and is contained in a bag which is attached to the back of his chair. The commode is an Oyster Shower Chair which folds up nicely for travelling, Thomas calls the shower chair a Pooh chair as you sit on it to pooh (he proudly says).
The Eurostar takes just over 2 hours to get to the park in Disneyland Paris and its a short walk to the hotel with the equipment.
In the park we show how Andrew can access Thomas's favourite ride "Its a small world after all" in his electric wheelchair. Disney have provided a specially adapted boat which includes a wheelchair ramp and space to be tied down so that they can enjoy the ride as an inter-abled family.
During the holiday disaster strikes and Andrew has a puncture in one of his main drive wheels. The first time this has ever happened in 12 years of using this kind of electric wheelchair to get around.
The wheelchair grinds to a halt and they are stuck, Joanne (Andrew's wife) quickly comes to the rescue alerting the concierge at the hotel who also come running with a manual wheelchair to transfer Andrew into. Thomas won't let Andrew's carer push him in the manual chair he wants to do all the pushing. The manual wheelchair has no seatbelt so Andrew has to be careful not to fall out.
Joanne accompany's the hotel staff who take her to a local bike shop where the wheel is repaired so that they can continue their holiday. A little Disney magic saved the day and from the moment the puncture happened to when they were back in the park enjoying the rides was only 4 hours.

Absolutely LOVED this vlog. I am in awe that disney organised for your chair to be repaired! How flipping awesome. Which hotel did you stay in? I've heard the sequoia lodge is the best for wheelchair accessible-ness? Omg Tom talking to the go-pro on your chair is just the cutest. It's so heartwarming to see Tom basically use you as his own personal segway the way the girls do with me ha.
Oh and the bariatric chair situation reminds me much of what we wheelies go through flying and in airports to and from our actual chairs. I'd honestly be holding on like you were despite if it had a seatbelt as I'm like a bobblehead if I know there's no headrest for well... resting though I'm pro-dominently a "forward leaner" I believe it's termed as in the MD community. Did you notice any park wheelchairs with even a tall backrest that could help somebody with weaker neck control?
May I request a future vlog on your super awesome bespoke chair? Full head to toe of it's awesome-ness and features, why you went with this over say the top dogs of recent years etc...

We stayed at the sequoia lodge both times , if I'm honest the room wasn't great , very tired and not that big , we had two rooms with interconnecting doors (the interconnecting door not wide enough for my chair which made things a little awkward but the bathroom was huge. You need to have proof you are disabled and then they give you a priority pass for the rides that you can access to cut down the queues and it also says which rides you can get on , there aren't many but the pass also allows you to skip the queue for meeting the characters (Like Darth Vader and Mickey) which was really cool

Great to Disney step up and fix the tyre (solids are a must). Can i ask about your hoist, is that one you own or rent and do you know how available they are. I'm in a electric chair myself and horst availability would make planning a trip easier. I'm looking at doing a eurostar trip soon. Love the video, clicking the belt around your boy reminds me of me taking my younger brother out back in the day 😁

Going on train seems so much better than plane. I'm terrified of going on plane in chair much rather stay with my chair so I know it not trashed. lol Although recently discovered my chair too big to go on the small planes that go Europe. lol

Hi Sarah , I completely agree , there is also a toilet I could fit my chair in (we have an episode coming up in February where we took the Eurostar to Paris and fitted my wheelchair in the toilet) - also we have an episode on flying - please be sure to subscribe so you catch these when they come out :)

Love this video very informative. Just a question, I will be traveling from Manchester with my wife who is in a manual wheelchair and my toddler son, I just have some questions. First, is the Eurostar to DLP one train? As in, no need to switch trains or get off? (direct) and we are thinking Sequioa hotel, once you get off the Eurostar is it an easy shuttle to get to that hotel ? (is it easy to spot from the trainstation?) Is the shuttle an extra charge?

One train from London yes , it stops but you don’t change from London st Pancras until DLP
