i've noticed that western kpop stans always see gfriend's concept as "cute".. they're only cute for like 2-3 comebacks tops. even their biggest hit like "rough" and "time for the moon night" have this very mature sound that you don't really see in kpop. i suggest that you check those song out
Because cute stuff are not their standard ideal and get neglected a lot in their western pop culture, so usually most of them judged by the cover of the book whilst asian have the mixed around culture because there are more Asia countries than Europe, so we can easily to adapt "cute" stuff that major of the Kpop girl groups have offer. In the west, their ideal of woman is about "empowerment" so whenever they see the bunch of girls in their early 20s wearing school uniform singing in the cutesy sound will be offputting for many westerners, they also think that innocent concept is very weird when the group members are not underage. You can see how they mentioned Girl's Day and Everglow a lot something sexy and girl crush like Beyonce or Ellie Bilish that westerners would typically hear in their city, TV or radio. That’s why groups like BTS and Blackpink are the most popular in the West, while popular Korean groups like GFriend or Twice are usually only popular amongst real Kpop fans unless certain westerners have been listening to Kpop for long long time or are part of the anime culture, chances of groups like GFriend, Oh My Girl, WJSN, etc to get popular in the west isn't big

@Matt Obra yall act like blackpink and twice would be successful with the same concept if they are in a different company... The fact that gfriend is as successful as they are now while being in a small company like source music is not something anyone can just recreate. They dont have a senior artist in their company to go to for advice, the closest they got to that was teentop before they debuted. Compare it to the likes of twice and blackpink which have senior idols to ask advice to, plus the luxury of having more budget and resources to further themselves. And dont freaking call gfriend vanilla, vanilla means common and i havent seen anyone treat innocent concepts with power. Power is often associated with girlcrush or teen crush concepts but not at all associated with innocence.
At 5:55, you asked why they did this concept just now, it's because now (at their present age) is the APPROPRIATE time to do this concept not during their teens.. it's called natural growth.. and it's beautiful. Buddies appreciated that they took their time and they did not rush 😍

I do see this and really appreciate that they didn't make them grow up too fast. Ironically, that's one of the reasons I like kpop so much because it does have that element of wholesomeness that the majority western artists lack. You are the type of person that the 'BEAT' matters more than the lyrics of the song. Gfriend songs focuses more on the 'LYRICS' than the beat and that's what we like about them.

That's why Apink stays in the 2.5 generation, not the 3rd. Gfriend beat all 2nd generation idols and opened 3rd generation. At that time, red velvet and Mamamoo were girl groups that "should be watched". In the future, the fourth generation in the female idol market will be opened only when the group that wins the black pink.
She likes fingertip...she has tastee. People called it a flop because they changed up too early. That is the sad part of it. So they played safe and now they are slowly getting braver with their music. Like I never get how people didn't like fingertip.
The problem not only with you but with general public is that many don't know how to recognize concepts. For y'all is either cute/ girl crush badass, and if is not bad ass is cute.
Gfriend never was 'cute' but an innocent image combined with powerful vocals and dance skills.
Neither their lastest release like crossroads or sunrise are even cute but because is not a badass concept ,people keep calling them "cute" while is a mature Nostalgia and melancholy. So if you don't understand this kind of details you gonna keep thinking that everything that isn't badass is just cute.

Or Pepe by clc ? Like that. Yeah gfriends style has been Orchestra and they changed it occasionally with fingertip fever and now apple. Although their titles are mostly orchestra their b sides are mostly the opposite. If you want to check the b sides of Apple then it would be ‘creme brûlée’ I don’t think gfriend will stay with the style of apple tho. And gfriend songs mostly are always about the choreo and vocals and lyrics only. So if you like vocals than gfriend is actually a good group to listen to. Anyways All In all. 100% in everything. They always had this in them. GFriend has never had a full on "cute" concept. I feel like your past experiences might have been biased because you though they were doing a "cute" concept. Rough was definitely not a cute concept and it's their most successful song music show wise. Sure they have a few cute songs in their discography but listen to them free from any preconceived notions and you will find that they were never fully "cute". They have great B-Sides too. My favourite songs from them are, Rough, Sunrise, Eye of The Storm, Only 1, Memoria, Vacation. The only one you can really call "cute" is probably Vacation.

Hi thanks for reacting to Gfriend! But their transformation is related to their growth. Like If they do this concept on their debut days. It would be sooo forced like can you imagine 16-19 year olds doin that concept? The thing with Gfriend is they are very natural with the concept they do. In your opinion it's cute, but for me it's innocent as they should be considering their age at that time.
If you like Apple, then thank you but I don't think it should be the reason for you to stan coz their concept every winter comeback is orchestral-pop and I'm afraid you would be dissapointed.
People have diff tastes and I respect that just like I don't like other group's sound.

the only gfriend concept that was only cute was sunny summer. nothing wrong with cute concepts bc they slay but gfriend's songs are rich and really interesting. they did tons of concepts and different sounds yall just refuse to acknowledge for some strange reason like i dont understand the one side beef everyone has with this group when the members are talented, funny, sweet and genuinely like each other lmao
We absolutely recognize their talent we've said it here, we've said it in previous videos, and we will continue to say it in the future these girls are so freaking talented and there is no denying that. But for some reason the only songs that have resonated with us so far have been fingertip and apple, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
When we say "cute" it's more of an umbrella term for anything not typical girl crush/sexy which was our mistake we will define it clearer in the future. We didn't mean it in a derogatory way we were just trying to catagorize the concept quickly. There are definitely some cute/more innocent style songs that we both really like (some gg and others bg songs), but for the most part we just tend to gravitate to the girl crush sound when it comes to girl groups. But we are trying to branch out and give artists we don't usually listen to a chance, and we saw the teaser pics for this comeback and were super intrigued.
I know your statements were more generalized and I agree that people can be very closed minded and rude about this kind of stuff which is annoying, but I just wanted to give a little more insight to us and where we stand on this channel. So glad you guys took the time to react to Gfriend! They've been one of my favorite groups for some time now and I can definitely understand not getting behind their early stuff. I mean, if I had to compare Gfriend's journey another group, they are quite similar to Apink during the late 2nd gen/early 3rd gen days of kpop. Both groups started out with innocent concepts, but as they matured they finally were able to transition into concepts that fit them. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of Girls Day with the white outfits lol. Oh also, they have a few other songs that came out before this that were in their transition from innocent to mature that I think you might like such as "Fever," "Sunrise," and "Crossroads" (which the mv takes place just before the mv for apple and is a bit more on the emotional side).

Gfriend has a journey storyline right in their debut. From a girls to ladies. And that is so nice to watch it from the start 🍎
We Buddies have loved the “powerful innocence” concept they’ve kind of carved out, but I understand how and why you could consider it “cute.” I love songs like Love Whisper and Glass Bead still, but I have enjoyed seeing their growth as artists and as people in the past five years. Do check out Crossroads and Labyrinth as well. I love that they have matured and moved toward more sexy vibe, but without it being “girl crush” or all about how “hot” they can be. They really project a smart, mature, intriguing sexiness in this. Our powerful innocent teens are now becoming powerful mature women. I love it!
And i suggest.. U guys to react to gfriend full albums... Song of the sirens.. And u will see gfriend songs mix genre.. Not many group will have a good song in 1 album.. Try to listen to gfriend album.. Even bside song can be a tirle track.. This is my personal opinions..
Trueee all albums are amazing like i listen to all their songs and i love SOTS album amazing tracks but for this year so far for me labyrinth album is amazing all track are title worthy

GFriend does many different styles. It's been years since anything was "cute"..Actually, the last 3 comebacks have been Romantic Melancholy and a bit dark.

Love the way you guys approached this video. I appreciate your opinion. I’m a huge fan of GFRIEND and when I got into KPop the cute bubblegum pop was something I couldn’t get into either (I started with Blackpink who are more Bangers) as one of you said I too found it hard to get into Twice at a point because that’s what I felt from a lot of their music. I think the big distinction with GFRIEND that may come as a turn off to many is their MVs tend to be more bright concept which comes off as cute, although the lyrics aren’t always that way. The sound of GFRIEND tends to lean towards traditional instruments giving it more of a classical feel, it’s one of the signatures that drew me in but I think for many it can be a turn off since it tends to give that cute, innocent, more traditional feel. This is why with fingertip you were much more appreciative of the sound, it’s not their traditional style. I LOVED Fingertip as well because of that. I’d be curious to know if you listened to or checked out the track Labyrinth from the album previous to this one, it has an EDM feel and was one of my early favorites as well.

Thank you for reacting to gfriend. They do the concept to strengthened their storyline. If you look closely to all their mv it show how they are growing from young to adult. That is what they're trying to achieved. Gfriend didnt just provide concept to appeal fans but they give storyline n theory since debut. Thats why some people find it hard to get to them. I do hope you guys would react to more gf mv. Speacially in order from : glass bead, me gustas tu, rough, Navillera, fingertip, love whisper, summer rain, time for the moon night, sunny summer, sunrise, fever, a tale of glass bead:previous story, crossroad, a tale of Glass bead : butterfly effect. Look closely to the lyrics coz it'll tell you their song has so much emotion from happy to sad than the eyes could tell. N mostly their song is about friendship which also genderless. Thanks again.

Thanks! I've always wanted to like Gfriend because they are so talented. When I was in Korea (I was there when Rough was huge) their music gets played everywhere but it still never clicked with me. I'm glad this one did and hopefully more will in the future ❤ -Lori
Their second photobook is called choice. I think after crossroads they really want to change things into apple. So, next album must be the choice they make as in the photobook choice. They actually progressing slowly if you really follow their music. It's like they mature just as they grow older. I am also anticipating their next comeback of course as a die hard buddy since pre debut. Haha. They reminded me a lot of SNSD. Progressing in music with age.

"apple" is a great song. in combination with the music video it is one of the most stunning songs ever. and the girls are lovely, smart and hilarious (especially on the show "weekly idol"). and i say this even though i'm not a typical kpop fan (i'm a bit older, so i know more than 600 kpop songs, but i only like 10% of them. and i am "obsessed" with _only_ about 30 songs).
you two girls seem nice, but you focus more on the visuals, you are chatting, giggling and looking away mostly at the wrong moment, and thus missing out on all the small and fine details that are worth seeing and listening to, that gfriend has to offer in this music video.
this is not meant to be a complaint or an insult. i just wanted to share my observation with you in a factual way.

When the hell did Gfriend made a cute concept? Even though the first time I heard their song its like more on powerful and innocent one. And, if you're asking why they aren't doing this type of concept cause its part of their growth. From school trilogy and their other music videos are whole damn related to each other and its part of their discography. Everyone is allowed to have their tastes when it comes to different concepts and music styles. But I don't think it's right to say stuff like "cute" concepts were holding the girls back, especially considering how they debuted at really young ages :/
I always feel sad when I hear people call some great ggs Gfriend，Twice，Oh My Girl etc just as “cute gg”. They have qualities more than just cuteness. Gfriend for example，they are one of the few kpop ggs，even just groups，that use a lot of orchestra music in their songs which give their music a strong sense of classic style but more lively.
They have meaningful lyrics too,,,twice and omg too,,,I think everyone agreed that gfriend,twice,oh my girl never disappointed us with their lyrics,,,🥲

Yeah, Buddies used to hear those comments to Gfriend. You can only see GFRIEND as cute because their members have baby faces and usually not wearing heavy make up. The members are cute and their voices maybe, but not their concepts at all.

Nah, GFriend's concepts ain't cute, but rather innocent. Powerful innocent to be more precise. Also, they didn't stick to that concept. They had these passionate melancholies like Time For The Moon Night, Sunrise, Crossroads, and other genres. GFriend concept was never cute lol. Maybe Me Gustas Tu was cute, but most of the title tracks are not. They were upbeat songs with intense choreos. Their trademark concept has always been "powerful innocent" and "passionate melancholy". Check out Glass Bead, Rough, Navillera, Time for the Moon Night, or Summer Rain. Those songs were not cute. But concepts aside, us fans also love this comeback song, and we could see their growth very well, and we're so proud of that. So thank you, also, for appreciating this song. :)
I respect your opinions but gfriend's songs aren't cute, and gfriend creates their own concept every cb ♥ it is not cute but it is called pure innocent concept 😊 you should check out their other songs, not just their title tracks but also their other discography, i recommend "from me", "labyrinth", "bye", "You are not alone" and "crossroads". Haters always use the "all their songs sounds the same" but in reality they haven't even listened to their other discography, really glad you react to their latest comeback ♥

While this song is OK, I prefer "Time for the Moon Night", "Sunrise", and "Crossroad". To me, what makes a song a GFriend song is soaring strings and real instruments.

I wonder，to a lot of western Kpop lovers，are there only two different concepts （of ggs）in Kpop：Cute and Girlcrush？And some of them really dislike specific ggs only because they are “cute” .I even noticed some people regard “cuteness” as not being women empowering🙄 No concept is superior or inferior. I just hope all the Kpop lovers can treat every different concept equally. Of course we have rights to dislike a concept，but it shouldn't only because of the stereotype of this concept or the “stereotype” we set for this concept in our mind.
I totally agree with you. A girl group having a "cute" or "innocent" concept by no way means that they are inferior to "girl crush" groups (or visa versa). And groups who do have a cuter concept are absolutely not any less empowered as women. Purely by getting out there and slaying whatever concept they choose, making music, selling albums, and making their fans proud is power in itself. People can absolutely choose whether they like a group or want to listen to certain songs, but whether they listen to them or not, no group ever deserves hate 💜😊 -Josie

Me da risa cuando la gente dice que Gfriend es "cute" concept. Deberías informarte mejor sobre la trayectoria del grupo. Que salgan caritas bonitas en colores pasteles no quiere decir que sea cute. Para que lo entiendas mejor, conocer GFRIEND fue como ver el famoso anime de Puella Magi Madoka Mágica. Te venden algo pero luego te vas dando cuenta que hay toda una atmósfera sombría y oscura detrás de cada personaje. Por otro lado, creo que lo más importante en un grupo de kpop es la evolución y versatibilidad detrás de cada concepto que traen. Siento que Gfriend a pesar de tener excelentes vocals, tienen las coreografías mas originales y sincronizadas del kpop, además de que todas son visuals y fiel a un estilo que no necesariamente es comercial. Me quito el sombrero ante este grupo. Si no te gusta lo puedo entender, para eso está el resto de grupos con un concepto más que repetitivo en cada comeback.

Their concept is not cute hehe.. It is more like matured-in-not-sexy-way since day 1, well.. except for this comeback but still it's not as vulgar as the definition of "sexy" it is. Thank you for reacting and we do respect your opinion about the girls 💕
