I now look after an orchid patch on my small lawn, they did not like the dry early summer last year, but then they are marsh orchids in S Wales and out a little earlier than last year.

One thing you mention a lot are 'rodochilas'. Every time I think I get the idea with them I then realise I really don't and I can't find a decent explanation on the internet either. I'm more of a botany generalist than an orchid specialist so despite my enthusiasm I have lots to learn (and orchid genetics are horribly complicated at the best of times). Can you elaborate ?

The description I love with Rhodos is that the flower patterns are delicately painted by little kids but the Rhodos are the ones where the kid has knocked his paint pot over and the pattern is just a splodge !
In reality the pigmentation within the plant has malfunctioned such that there are no patterns, just a block of colour which can cover the flower completely ("full Rhodo") or just the centre part as with this Green Winged Orchid ("part Rhodo").
You will also find that, with spotted leaves orchids, the pigmentation malfunction affects the leaves in the same way such that the spots just blur into bulk colouring that looks like an over-ripened banana skin !
I have never seen or even heard of a "Rhodo" style Green Winged Orchid ...... this is a truly special and very rare orchid.
