80% of seafood caught in Australia is exported, keeping the price of fish way too high. They should start by buying back any licence to operators exporting fish and see where the dust settles. How can fish cost more than land animals to buy when there is no cost in growing the animals. The system is broken
Sarcasm, Thankyou Aus Gov. So pleased that you have committed to UNESCO . Headquarters of UNESCO in PARIS (FRANCE) how are they going at the moment????
Hi everyone, thanks for all your comments on this story. While we welcome a vigorous debate, we ask you to respect the views of others and treat them with courtesy.
What a lot of BS. Gill netting has been done world wide for centuries!!!!! And still there are fish. These Corporation gubberments dont want any fishing or agriculture.... you will eat bugs according to WEF.
whats the difference between a comercial trawler and barramundi and king salmon are in the river system not the barrier reef keep an eye on coral trout mate
im a rec fisher so this is ok for me theres plenty of other jobs out there it sucks but it is what it is i perfer line fishing i think itss much more sustainable
Simon miller who pays your salary each month by you doing your best to shut down the fishing industry How about you and your activists mates help and pay there house payments and any money left pay there childcare and school fees
It’s probably possible for fishermen to use better methods to keep the industry alive, the same could be said for lots of fisheries in the west, crayfishers are doing a cracking job, rec fishers are seeing better stock and overall the bycatch is negligible, it takes a lot of work to find the right balance but it must be possible.
It’s a shame ya brain is stuck to your feet People that enjoy fish but can’t catch it how are they going to enjoy Australian wild fish. Never thought of them They can eat that pond shit from Asia
I’m a seventh generation fisherman none of you have any clue what gillnetting is about you hate it because that’s what’s your told to do there’s are reason why I still catch fish because the methods are sustainable it’s about taking our right to feed ourselves away and selling the fishing rights to the highest overseas bidder unless you come from a long line of fishing you have no idea the government don’t even know when they sell our fishing rights they won’t fish it sustainably like us they’ll fish it out
Nothing to do with that and everything to do with the fact it destroys everything in its path there was gillneters pumping in the logan river and ever since they have stopped has been 100 times more sea life in the river
The pros catch wild fish for export but also to feed people that are unable to fish but still enjoy our wild fish. Why should they be forced to eat that pond shit that is imported from Asia. Everybody has a right to earn a living some people are on the dole some people wash cars and there’s people that fish for a living
Mate comments like that show you are educated by abc or Facebook. If you have some time I can get you a trio on a boat an youncan see what actually happens.
Can't wait till pro's Start line fishing so then they can say line fishing isn't sustainable. Then they can ban line fishing. Now won't that be funny when the amateurs can't fish
Did you not watch the program. The river fishers tend their nets till they pull them in, The ocean fishers only target fish in the first few metres of water. They do not trawl the bottom.
No they aren’t. I’ll be glad to visit next year and not have the gill nets here. Locals also say they are one of many that kill the big crocs to keep them away from the nets.
If we go back to fishing by line let us also go back to farming all our vegetables with horse drawn ploughs. Are the people who are suggesting this ban prepared to pay the same increased price for vegetables as the vast majority (sorry vegans) of fish eaters will have to pay for their food. This hasn't been thought out rationally by the do gooders. The local community also needs the fishing industry and all the other associated jobs.
$30 million annually from gill-netting with a population of 487(2021 census) and a cut to that will cripple the town? Just saying..
I know you thought you were making a great point but that equals 62 k a year per person, not exactly a windfall.
Cairns was gill netted years ago.. now when you fish the estuaries its hard work.. you would be lucky to catch a barra

The fishermen get paid very low prices it’s the middle men who make the money by jacking up the proces
We can’t even buy fresh prawns or fish up here in the gulf that is local and fresh. It’s all frozen.
This is actually NOT correct, not in Queensland at least.

Line fishing comercial for barramundi, $450.00 per kilo. thank you
You'll be able to get farmed barra from Indonesia and Thailand way cheaper than that, mate.
Who wants to eat farmed rubbish from Indonesia you wouldn’t know what chemicals your eating
@Frombie_01 very true but full of antibiotics and who knows what else in it
These conservation activities won't be happy till everyone is shut down from fishing.
What a lot of BS. Gill netting has been done world wide for centuries!!!!! And still there are fish. These Corporation gubberments dont want any fishing or agriculture.... you will eat bugs according to WEF.
They want fishing done by big multinational companies not small businesses.
Anyone wanting to protect dugong should stand firmly against so called cultural hunting and the illegal but widespread trade in dugong meat.
My thoughts are with you all up there on the west coast of Queensland and Karumba.

Amazing work there for all involved.
barramundi and chips in Brisbane will probably be fifty bucks in 2028

the fishing is going to get so much better now gill nets are banned
It’s a shame ya brain is stuck to your feet

Its all about leaving more fish for our Chinese and Indonesian comrade's
Nothing to do with that and everything to do with the fact it destroys everything in its path there was gillneters pumping in the logan river and ever since they have stopped has been 100 times more sea life in the river
We need to stop netting in Australia. As an Australian we are sick of it destroying the waterways overfishing and selling most fish overseas.
The pros catch wild fish for export but also to feed people that are unable to fish but still enjoy our wild fish.

More than 80% sold to our domestic market mate. Stop spreading utter bs

You'll still let China fish in restricted zones through
Replace it with barramundi and mud crab 🦀 farming government could fund the initiatives.. too easy.
Commercial fishing is pretty much *unsustainable* in any case.
We really have no understanding of how many fish are out there!
So true but the government don`t care
Can't wait till pro's Start line fishing so then they can say line fishing isn't sustainable. Then they can ban line fishing. Now won't that be funny when the amateurs can't fish
This is great news. Netting is indiscrimnate catches everything.
Rubbish!
Did you not watch the program. The river fishers tend their nets till they pull them in, The ocean fishers only target fish in the first few metres of water. They do not trawl the bottom.
They literally just showed that it doesn't 🤣 depends on how it's done and on what scale mate
You obviously have zero first hand knowledge of how commercial netting works.
best of the best
Gillnets are terrible so its a great thing. I'm i fisher also.
Look people this is all a great big con
Love it, ban it.
These small boats are doing all they can to create a sustainable fishery. Leave them alone and go sort out the big asian factory trawlers
No they aren’t. I’ll be glad to visit next year and not have the gill nets here. Locals also say they are one of many that kill the big crocs to keep them away from the nets.
It is bullshit
Good
Who cares they are an introduced species anywy😂

I bet most of these fish get sent overseas. Can’t even buy it here
Take quiet a while to catch a ton of barramundi by line 😂😂😂😂😂😂
