Thanks! Yep, that long purple is hard to beat for production and reliability. I can't wait to get growing again, and I know that you guys are probably feeling the same way.
You grew some awesome egg plants over there last year Mr. Jim. We can not find many folks that like them so we are cutting back to two plants this year. I like it only if cut thin and fry the snot out of it. Rene loves it no matter how it is cooked but she can only eat so much. Those straw bales worked very well for you! All we need is winter to go away now and spring to come on in. Hope you have a great weekend buddy!
We sure can't eat all we grow, so most of the excess goes to the food bank. I'm with you on winter going away. Can't wait for that! But for this weekend, much of our state will deal with blizzard conditions. I think we will get lucky this time though.
Eggplants are beautiful and interesting. I grew one once just to see the plant. I never grew another one bc we don't eat eggplant. I didn't find anything great about the fruits to convince me I need eggplants in my kitchen.
Thanks Brent! I'm on the fence about how many different types to grow this year. I'm trying to scale back, but it's so hard to do. I'm always a little bit like a kid in a candy store.
Good morning Jim. We only grow the long purple or Ichiban II. Mel like the darker purple better. We did ok last year but the flea beetles took over when we were in the Philippines. Maybe we'll do less traveling this year. 😊 Have a great day. Best wishes Bob.
You can use plant netting for that. I happened to have some silicon tulle and cover all my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants for couple of weeks and the plants did quite nice till I came back...
Thx 4 Sharing Yr Video With Us. Yr Very Lucky Were Ever You Are Living. I Live Here In UK.England And We Dont Get Much Sun Here Iv Tried A Few Times Growing Egg Plants From Seeds But As Soon As They Start To Bloom Flowers Thats It They Just Shrivel Up And Drop Down. Dont Know Wht Im Doing Wrong Most Of The Other Veg I Seed They Grow But NOT The Egg Plants. If Any One Has Any Idea Wht I Can Do. Or Wht Im Doing Wrong Or Any Thing To Help Please Do Msg Me. Thx
You might not be doing anything wrong, Aleshaa. With your climate, I would start your eggplant extra early indoors. Maybe even up to 12 weeks. I think if you gave them a big head start, they might have a chance. They do like it hot though. And if you've always tried the same type, you might try growing a different type of eggplant. That can make a difference sometimes. Long Purple eggplants have always been a very good producer for us.
@@MidwestGardener Thx For The Advice/Help Very Kind Of You. I Think Thats Wht I Am Going 2 Do Give Them A Head Start A Few Weeks Early. And The Egg Plant Seeds Yr Talking About Long Purple Is That The Full Name? Thx Again Hunn x
I rewatched your video and am thinking of growing eggplant again this summer. Last summer I skipped eggplant, but the previous year I grew Aswad, Mitoyo, Listia de Gandia, Rosita, and Ping Tung but none of these was that impressive for growing or eating. Prior to that I grew Black Beauty from a couple plants I bought and it seem to do better than the rest I’ve grown in AZ. I’m thinking of growing it again and maybe trying Long Purple. Sounds like Ichiban might be a variety to try. Do you have any favorites you’d recommend? Hope all is well. Cheers!
@@MidwestGardener I’m going to place a seed order and BI has Long Purple, so I’m going to try it. If I see Ichiban plants at HD, I’ll give one a try. Appreciate the reply. Best of luck with gardening this year. Have a good one!
I Amy. There are a bunch of different green types, so I'm not sure what you are looking for. Baker Creek sells five or 6 different green ones....last I checked.
Thanks! If you decide to give it a try, long purple is a great one to start with. It's always produced well for us. We are doing well here. Hope you and your family are all doing well.....especially that cute little granddaughter of yours :)
Nice eggplant looks healthy beautiful variety, I’m going to share post on Facebook to my sister in Central highland she can watch, learn from you thank you for the video.
Thanks! I have sandy loam soil, but I've been using wood chips as mulch for 4 years now. Of course if you use wood chips as much, you don't want to mix them with the soil. I no longer dig, except to plant. Sometimes I fertilize once in the spring with whatever I have on hand. With these plants, I think I used 12-12-12.
Nice harvest. You seems to have a good production. I use heirloom seeds for tomatoes, peppers and a lot of vegetables but poor results with heirloom eggplant (ok with hybrid, what i don't really appreciate, and only in a greenhouse, no success outside). Grettings from Europe
Good to hear from you. We do pretty well most of the time with production. Not sure exactly what your climate is like in the summer, but they seem to enjoy our heat here.
Wow good to know but too late for us here... beef stew, lamb stew, sauté with sour sour leaves , kalolo, spinach and malabar spinach. In congo 🇨🇩we have bunch of recipes for eggplants 🍆 or just make a white souc3 with it. We also hvae our bitter eggplants white eggplants. Noted ✅️ to grow this variety!
does the lower leaves constantly turn yellow and fall off or was I maybe not feeding it enough? last year was my first year with eggplant so I didn't know what to expect.
Occasionally some of the oldest leaves will yellow and fall off, but not too many of them...unless we get some really intense heat. Yeah, it could be it needs more nitrogen. It's really hard to know for sure
Sir, I’ve been watching for almost a year now, and only recently a question has come up. You mention climate zones, yours being 6b. Where can I find out what zone I live in? Thanks for your ongoing efforts.
@@MidwestGardener Thanks very much. As I suspected, this is a scale particular to the US, and I'm in the UK. I should be able to make an approximation by looking at the scale, though. All the best to you.
They are in the same family, so it shouldn't hurt anything. They can be attacked by the same pests though, so keep an eye out for that. I try to move my eggplants and tomatoes a little each year though.
Really started to like eggplants over the past couple of years. Hoping possibly to try another plant or two with all the other stuff we have hopes for, but one of those unsure things still. Not really a big deal, but had our very first to fruit one eggplant last year. Not a ribbon winner, but the coolest one I had ever seen. :) Good stuff. Thanks for the share!
Do you ever get white flies or flea beetles? If you do what do you use to get rid of them? I use 5 parts water 2 parts alcohol and 1 tbsp dish soap. That seems to help knock them down. I found that recipe online.
Might be coz I've been off YT for a while but you weren't showing up in my list of subbed channels and I wasn't getting notifications ... so I unsubbed and resubbed and voila ... you're there again 😊👍
Rosita is a delicacy. Wait until you taste it. Fried in panko & in beef stew. My dream is to grow a plant like yours!!!
Thanks!! Yes, they are very good.
All those eggplants are very pretty .I tell myself every year to grow some but I always put it off.
Thanks! Well, maybe this can be the year 😀
I live in zone 6 as well in northern New Jersey you're information is very helpful and I will be watching many more of you're videos.
Thanks a bunch, Dean! Maybe we can compare notes as the season goes along.
Youre very welcome and that would be great.
Great variety of egg plants. My wife loves egg plants and we grow the Ichiban and long purple. We will have to look into the other varieties.
Thanks! Yep, that long purple is hard to beat for production and reliability. I can't wait to get growing again, and I know that you guys are probably feeling the same way.
They are pretty egg plants. Thank you, Sir.
Thanks Neal! You're welcome.

I understand. Some people love them, and some people don't like them at all.
They all have such a pretty color on them! I have never tried egg plant, but just the colors are enough to be tempted to grow it 😊
Thanks! There are a lot of different ones out there.
Lots of beautiful eggplants. You always grow very diverse and it's fun to watch. Look forward to your upcoming season.

I'm growing some of the same varieties this year I didn't grow any last summer Thanks for sharing!!!❤️

But that traveling is so much fun :) Maybe do a little of both. Yeah, those flea beetles can really do a number on them sometimes.
You can use plant netting for that. I happened to have some silicon tulle and cover all my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants for couple of weeks and the plants did quite nice till I came back...
Thanks I do need to get some and try it.
Ichiban, Rosita those are the two eggplants I am growing this summer. Hope they turn out as productive as your grow them.
The Ichiban II was even more productive for us than the long purple was last year. And we really like the Rosita. I hope they do great for you!

Beautiful eggplant Jim! Is this current footage or past footage? You have eggplant ready already?!
Thanks! These are clips from last year.
Blizzard headed our way today, so no eggplants this year till about July or so.
Beautiful eggplants, do you use any particular soil and fertilizer?

Thanks! It's something we eat.

I live on Zone 6A, how often do you water your eggplants?
I don't have a set schedule for all of them, but the ones on my drip system get watered a little bit every other day during the hottest months.

Your eggplants were so beautiful! Ants 🐜 seem to love my eggplants which makes harvesting annoying... 👩🏽🌾😊🍆😊 Take Care, Peaches!
Thanks! I'm sure glad we don't have to deal with ants on ours. Flea beetles do the most damage to ours.
